Minnesota, entered the Navy in ,lanuary I9-15. and served as an enlisted man until June 1947. Isle entered the Naval Academy in June I9-17 and graduated in 1951. After graduation, CDR Knutson served in USS CAMBRIA QAPA-365 from 1951 until 1952 as Sipial Officer. and in USS LST-603 from 1952 to 1953 as Engineering Officer. Upon completion of Gun Ordnance School in 1953. he reported to the USS THE SULLIVANS QDD-5375 for duty as Gunnery Officer. ln April 1955 he reported to the Staff Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Force, .-Xtlauitie Fleet. for duty as an officer in the Training and Readiness section. From 1957 through 1959 he attended the 1.5. Naval Postgraduate School in Nlonterey. California. where he received a degree in Chemical Engineering. llc assumed command of the ESS UTINA QATF-1635 in july 1959 and reported to the 11.5. Naval War College in july of 1961 as a student in the Command and Staff course. From ,Iuly 1962 to September 1964 he served in USS SENIMEF CDDG-185 as Executive Officer. 1n September 1964 he reported to the Bureau of Weapons for duty in the guided missile section. On 1 May 1966 he became Executive Assistant to the Commander Naval Ordnance Systems Command and served in that billet until reporting to the 1755 Xl171..1,1N1X QDD-9-1-lj as Commanding Officer. Some of the highlights of Commander Knutsonis naval career include Squadron E75 for Excellence and Gunnery E's for Excellence while in command of USS UTINA CATF-1635 and the Bronze Star for USS Nll'l.l..lNlX's success in Vietnam deployment. when he was Commanding Officer in 1969. Conunander Knutson is married to the former Sarah Kelly. of Westernport. Maryland, and they have E four children. Nlargret Shaw. 12: Susanna jane. 11: Donald. jr.. 8: and Beth Ellen. 6.
