Vice Admiral William A. Schoech, USN, who assumed command ot the SEVENTH Fleet 28 October 1961, Was bOf1'1 ifl Blakesburg, Iowa on 17 October 1904. He attended public schools in lowa and graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1928. He was awarded a Master ot Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the California lnstitute ot Technology in 1938. ln 1950 he graduated from the National War College in Washington, D.C. Admiral Schoech completed flight training and was designated a naval aviator in 1930. During World War II he saw duty principally in the Pacitic Fleet and the Naval Air Operaa tional Training Command. lm- rnediately alter the war he as- sumod coniinaiid ot tho Aaiutic Wing ol the Naval Air 'transport Service. He also served in the ottice ot the Chiet ot Naval Operations. Prior to as- suming command ot the SEVEN- TH Fleet he was Deputy Chiet- ot the Bureau ot Naval Weapons. Coptoin Nels C. Johnson Chief of SJLOH lto September 5, 19615 Captain Nels C. Johnson, Chief of Staff and Aide to Commander SEVENTH Fleet, was born in Auburn, New Hampshire, on July 9, 1912. He was appointed to the U. S. Naval Academy in 1930 and was commioned ensign upon his graduation in 1934. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, Captain Johnson was serving aboard the USS REJD, which survived that attack. He also served aboard the destroyer USS MCLANAHAN as executive officer and as its Commanding Officer. Captain Johnson's post-war assignments in- cluded duty as Commanding Officer, USS WITEK , Atlantic Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer on the Staff of Commander-in-Chief, Altantic Fleet, Planning Officer, North Atlantic Ocean Regional Planning Group-one of the five original planning groups in NATO, Divi- sion Commander, Destroyer Division 262, and as Head of Command Policy Section of the Strategic Plans Division in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. After graduation from the National War College in 1956, Captain Johnson Paftici' pated in Antarctic operations as Commanding Officer of the attack cargo ship USS ARNEB- On March 5, 1959, he assumed command of the heavy cruiser USS HELENA, followinq an assignment as Head of the Joint and Interna- tional Plans Branch of the Strategic PlanS Branch of the Strategic Plans Division in the Office of Naval Operations. On June 16, 1936, Captain Johnson married the former Miss Dorothea Lindall of Bremerton, Washington. They have one daughter' Vero' nica, who presently resides in San Diego and is married to LTJG William Hohmann, USN- Captain Johnson was selected for Rear Ad' miral in July 1961 and assumed this rank upon re-assignment as Commander, A1'I1PhibiOus Group THREE in October 1961.

Captain Frederick H SCl'H19ld9V Cgmmgndmg GFFICSF Cto October 25,1961i The Man Who Seldom Sleeps would be a fitting title for our Com. manding Officer, Captain Frederick H, Schneider. When SAINT PAUL is par. ticipating in one of her numerous operations, he is seen almost continuously on the bridge, the perpetual cigar in his mouth, maintaining his ever-alert vigil to insure the safety of his ship and crew. Twenty-four years of experience with everything from battleships to destroyers to staff duty have fully qualified Captain Schneider for the very important position he holds as Commanding Officer of the SEVENTH Fleet flagship. Captain Schneider, a native of Wausau, Wisconsin, was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and commissioned an Ensign in 1937. His first duty assignment was aboard the U.S.S. IDAHO CBB-421 where he remained until 1942 serving in engineering, communications and gunnery billets. During the remaining years of World War ll, Captain Schneider served as Ex- ecutive Officer of the U S.S. PERRY KDMS- 17j and the U.S.S. MELVIN KDD-6801 and as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. THORN CDD-6471. While commanding the THORN in the Pacific, Captain Schneider was awarded the Silver Star for participaticn in the Battle for Leyte Gulf and the Bronze Star for action in the South China Sea. The Captain ras served as a member of the Joint Strategic Plans Committee, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Flag Secretary on the Staff of Commander-in-Chief, Pacific! Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet, OS Aide in the Office of the Secretary of the Navy, Commanding Officer, U.S.S- WILLIS A. LEE CDL-41, Commander Destroyer Division 22, head Of the Command Policy Section, Strategic Plans Division, Office of the Chief of Navdl Operations, and Commanding Officer, U.S.S. VERMILLION KAKA-1071. Captain Schneider is married to the former Marion Sheehan Daly of New York City and they have one son, Frederick Jr., born in Hawaii in 1950.
