Nlark has been Varsity goalie for the last two years and has done a con- spicuously line job. In fact, sports in gen- eral, play an important role in his life and he has put his ability to digest and inter- pret the various aspects of the sporting world to good use by editing this year- bookls sports' section. VYith such a nimble mind, he can talk you into or out of most anything, if you listen to him long enough. The owner of an exceptional name, Klark has, on occasion, been reprimanded by his masters for ordering them to mark his paper. However, aside from such choice remarks, Klark has shown himself to be one of the most consistent members of his class in all phases of school life. After moving ahead twice in the high scoring first half on touchdowns by Tim Scott, only to have Columbia Heights march right back to equalize the score. the Academy fell apart in the second half as they allowed the Heighters to add the win- ning touchdown in the third quarter. Right End Frank Hil+on SPA 14 Shattuck 6 The .Xcademy spoiled Shattuck's home- coming while, at the same time, breaking a four game losing streak of their own by defeating the Shads fourteen to six. The game started out on a rather unfavorable note as Shattuck powered their way to a touchdown early in the first quarter. lfrom then on, the Acads began to pick up until. early in the fourth quarter, Scott broke the game wide open, scoring on a sixty yard reverse and adding the extra point. Around 1936, Ravens- court, a Canadian high school, began to play the Academy each year, and this year the Acads came through in true style by winning 2 to 1. As is quite usual in high school hockey, teams get in a slight slump, and this occurred this year at the Acade- my. ,Iust when the boys seemed to be go- ing their best, they promptly lost three in a row to St. Thomas, Blake and Cretin. All three of these games were lost by small scores, thanks to the great goal-tending of Paper who throughout the entire season never allowed more than 3 goals in a game. After this last defeat by a score of 1 to 2, the Acads came back in grand f 51' John Towle wiih puck in Ravenscourf game style to wallop johnson by a score of 4 to U. After this victory, the squad was quite confident and when they played Cretin in the new Vl'illiams Arena in Alinneapolis, they felt sure they could break Cretinls string of 35 games without a defeat. After Bill Schraderfs first tally in the middle of the first period, Cretin dominated the play during the second period, and finally came back in the third to tie up the game. XYith a minute and a half left, Frank Hil- ton tallied to give SPA a Z to 1 victory. Notice, if you will, that both goals were scored by juniors. VVe know they'll have as fine a season with their captain-elect Bruce Alonick, as we did with our truly great captain john Towle. E I 'L J .4 if Q .i-llg111 1 Tucked away at the end of one of the dustier, more remote halls of SPA, there is a dimly lighted little cube of a room whose door bears the inscription Nou' and Tlmn stroked in large and fearsome letters of angry red. Those for whom the room was originally intended have long since resigned themselves to the fact that it is, in reality not the Nou' and Then room, but the SPJR room. lt is here, however, that during the wee, small hours, through the spasmodic efforts of the editors, the mysterious and awe- somely powerful tabloid, the Now and Tlzmz, is born. Vlorking amid a litter of SPAR material has given the editors a complex, and the paper a corresponding sense of frustration. Here is one case where the paper must have an influence because most of the school reflects that feeling. The responsibility of editing the paper this year was divided on two pairs of well padded shoulders. They fthe shoulders, not the padsl belonged to .lack Bacon and Left fo rughf: Towle W. Woza, Oacow Hans P. Ba Tom Osborn. .-X great deal of credit should go to Dick Harris, sports' editor, and to Bill Towle, business manager, both of whom helped put the paper on a some- what regular basis. Associate editor, Charles Wood, has now inherited the pads to become the new editor-in-chief. The all-important advertising was taken care of by Leo Hauser, Harry Dilworth, Ter- rence O'Brien, Bruce Kemper, and Tho- mond O'Brien. Since this year's staff was not plagued by the financial troubles common during the last few years, they were able to ex- periment with off-set printing instead of letter-press. The paper came out fairly regularly, and with every issue there was a new rise in interest. Now, at last the editors may lay down their pens, transferring the torch to Charlie Vkood, and hope that he wonft get his fingers burned as badly as they. And Charlie, please give the Now and Then room a good sweeping! ,vm J. Hesse L. Page nirrefy-eight Leff to riqhf: Ordway, Towle J., You're elected editor, jim, congratula- tions ll' Swell, I tell myself, as I think how much I know about putting out year- books. Absolutely nothing. You've got Tim Scott as Associate Ifditor and 'idea man'g with Bob Ordway and john Towle as Advertising managers, John Burr as Business Manager, Klark Paper as Sports' Iiditor, and Larry Schlick as Photograph- er. You've got a class of nineteen seniors, a school of 167 boys, and four years of yearbook tradition behind you. Well, Scotty did everything from taking pictures, writing articles, selling ads, and pasting pictures to, I've got ideas I haven't even used yetn, and this idea is so terrific it won,t even work . .lohn Towle, Iiob Ordway, -lohn Burr, and Alark Paper got ads, and how, but they also wrote articles, drove me to heaven knows where, and in every conceivable way helped me with the job which faced us. And, Larry Schlick, despite, I3ut. there are spots on this picture, the pic- ture's out of focus, the deadline for those 30 pictures is tomorrow, you know , and other choice remarks from yours truly did a superhuman job of posing, taking, and enlarging two-thirds of our pictures. Burr J., Paper, Scott E,, Schliclv, Barnes. But, the seven of us couldn't have done the job alone, for we needed the writing talent of many of the other seniors, such as Dick Bell and Dick Harris. The 1950 SPAR was a class project, with every senior doing something to further the cause. Also we needed the willing cameras of Klartin Ifield and Dick Klerrill. I still hear myself droning on with, Those 350 words you wrote, Joe, were fine, but l only wanted 100 . '4Oh, have it in any time before ,lune first. l've got news for you, we need more money. That was a swell picture, joe, but did you take it in a fog, or was your lens cap still onf' Don't you think this layout would make pretty wallpaper?,, XYell, l realize I was a cruel and heartless task master this year, who demanded perfection, and was never satisfied. Throughout the Year Mr. l itch came to my rescue with encourage- ment and advice, and as he went over all the articles, he helped me overcome those traditional pitfalls of editors. Only in a yearbook will those memories of our last year at the Academy be pre- served, always fresh and alive, although our faculties become dull. The 1950 SPAR was not a product of my work, nor the staff's, but of the whole senior class.
