! e 5 I I . 1 I THE 1969 MICHAELINIAN SAINT MICHAEL HIGH SCHCIOL 44 PIUS STREET PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA 15203 NR The development of a child's character must be enhanced by the close moral guidance of responsible people dedicated to the task of enriching the mind and its capacity to think. K Bishop THE MOST REVEREND JOHN J. WRIGHT, S.T.D. Bishop John J. Wright, solemn and serious, stops for a moment of quiet prayer. He has many mixed emo- tions on the reformation of the Catholic Liturgy and of Catholic education taking place throughout the schools of Pitts- burgh. The Bishop acknowledges the great value of a Catholic education in todays world. Auxiliary Bishop School Superintendent THE MOST REVEREND JOHN B. McDOWELL, S.T.D. The Most Reverend John B. lVlc- Dowell, Superintendent of Catholic schools in the diocese of Pittsburgh, has played a great part in the advance- ment of the Parochial school system. Pastor As you leave us, my dear Seniors, I think of your four years on good old Pius Street-your Sisters and Teachers, your Science Laboratories, your trips down over the hill with John Peschko to the 10th Street swimming hole , -your ear-bursting music at your dances, your scared faces during exam week, your formal composure in the deep, majestic old Church of St. Mi- chael's. I hear in the quiet of an August Night your cheerleaders practicing, the sweet tones of your Christmas Carols, and I see our boys covered with sweat and exhaustion on a locker room bench after losing a close Basketball Game. This truly is education-your heart, your emotions, your mind, your bodies. We are proud that St. Michael's High, like every Catholic Educational center in the world educates its youth to follow exactly the First Commandment: to love God with one's whole being, with all our strength, our minds, our bodies, our whole beings. lVlay it always be so with each of you! God be with you. Father John Patrick Moore, C.P., Pastor TAKING TIME OUT from his tedious schedule is Father John, our pastor, to discuss the current problems facing the teenagers of today. Included in this discussion are: R. Lupori, R. Yotz, L. Lupori, P. Walsh, E. Schanck, and P. Javorsky. 'Q IV. I have been with the class of 1969 since you were wee little Freshmen. I dare not write with any sense of pride, for like Father John we always feel that we have not done enough for you. What I mean is that looking back CTRY TO REMEMBER THAT DAY IN SEPTEIVIBERJ to 1965 onward to 1969 I think of our Religion Classes, our classes about God's message of Salvation in the Bible. Then I kind of switch my mind to all our teams, our coaches, our games, our uniforms. Finally, and most important, I shall always see you all kneeling before me in the Confessional, at the Communion Rail, ask- ing for God's blessing before all your games. On the light side there are the many times you brought us joy with your dramatic and artistic talents on the stage in the auditorium. In a word, we have tried to educate your whole person, your whole being, intellectually, physically, morally. May each of you forever bear the mark of that training, and give to God and to your country the fullness of service thru the fullness of your being. Father Peter O'Rourke, C.P., Assistant FATHER PETER CHARLES O'ROURKE, C.P. Assistant and Religious Instructor READ, READ, READ ! ! ! This is the theme Father Peter is trying to get across to these students, L. Rosenburger, S. Vale, D. Drapala, J. Froehlick, J. Ciechalski, and P. Redlinger, as he finds an interesting article in his favorite magazine. MORE COFFEE? asks Sister Celestine to Linda Clerici, Secretary: Paul Birek, Treasurer: and Nick Tupi, Vice-President: as Joyce Daugherty, President, hands out cookies. Sister Celestine often takes time out of her bus schedule Y for a friendly chat with the Student Council officers. Dear Graduates: The long, slow, and sometimes painful process of education goes on, then, with start- ling suddenness the words of an Alma Mater take on a deep meaning-the finality of it all becomes real. Many of the things to which so much im- portance was attached become insignificant while the insignificant slips into its rightful place of values. Life is like that-deep and full of meaning. No one escapes sorrow but neither is any- one without joy, provided one is willing to meet the challenge of sorting it all out. lVlay you al- ways be able to sort it all out and put all that happens to you in its rightful place. The restless streams we walk along are full of so many challenges. Recalling the happy occassion of your Ring Day, may I repeat my wish for you which was taken from Sounds of Silence. lVlay you always be able to turn your collar tothe cold and damp , and somewhere, at sometime, may the light of a neon sign stab your eyes and split the night. Whatever the neon light may be for you-at that moment God will be real, life will be real, and you will be real to yourself, and the magnitude and beauty of the whole world will be real for you. Conway, L. Lupori, D. Frobe, C. Beringer, and C. Hawkins leave for a very important task. They are tutors down at the South Side Brashear! The National Honor Society is now in its third year at St. Michael High School. The object of our chapter here at St. Michaels is the same as other schools, namely, to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in our students. Presently, we have only 10 members and they are all Seniors. SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP, CHARACTER, AND SERVICE! Shown below are St. Michael's 68-69 National Honor Soci- ety members. They are J. JUNIORS SHOW SPIRIT-To add to the joy of Senior Ring Day the church resounded with the angelic voices of the Juniors who were accompanied by Sister Carole and Sister Marie Therese. Forensics This year the forensic pro- gram at Saint Michael became one of the leading activities in the school. Under the direction of lVlr. Bobinski, moderator, and chapter president James lVlcKibben, our NFL chapter now ranks with the leading schools in the Pittsburgh district. Apart from participating every weekend at district tourna- ments, our chapter has hosted five events here, and has sponsored several service projects. lt is difficult for a school of our size to maintain itself among the large schools in our district, but the enthusiasm of our twently-one members has enabled us to keep on top. The motto of our chapter and of our Sigma Lambda Sigma honor society is I Call a Spade a Spade, and the record of our chapter in student congress, extemp, and orig- inal oratory proves that our motto does indeed express the spirit of our chapter. Although thirteen of our members will graduate, our ex- ceptional underclass members will provide a nucleus around which to continue to build an ever growing NFL program here at Saint Michael. WE'RE GREAT! Underclassmen NFL members under the guidance of Mr. John Bobinski, share their knowledge with each other and aim to keep the spirit high at St. Michael's. MONEY PROBLEMS! This program enables stu- dents from Saint Michael to take up trades at South High or Con- nelly Vocational. This is truly an asset to our school because we lack the facilities to provide this type of education for our students. Caught by the camera during one of their studies are the following Seniors who participate in this program: M. Kostiuk, J. Geraci, K. Lozecki, D. Bielewicz, D. Koerbel, and N. Linke. WE GIVE THEE THANKS OH LORD . . . After receiving their class rings in church, these Seniors R. Rauber, A. DeTemple, P. Wilhelm, N. Donovan, and J. The Junior football team daily lived by this slogan until they went down to defeat by the Mighty Seniors . TEAM WORK is what did it for the Seniors as they defeated the Juniors by a large margin. This game was one of the highlights in the school. Intramurals are the greatest activities in a school. They can only take place if the students have great spirit and a will to show it. Everyone who takes great effort in preparing them or who partici- pates in them is outstanding. A school needs sports- manship and the achievers show it. Not everyone can win, the students realize that, but that doesn't hinder them. They keep on trying. The kinds of Intramurals vary from basketball to baseball to chess. All are a measure of one's capability. Some day these very students who took part in these activities might very well have an opportunity to be in one of these special fields. ' Q . HPEP Ill MARKS OF QUALITY This fine old percussion pistol, muzzle loading, belonged to an English sea captain. It was made over a hundred years ago. The maker's hallmark identifies his work. Today, J8iL and other steel producers-proud also of their skill -identify the beauty, durability, and quality of steel with the symbol called the Steelmark. Look for the Steelmark when you buy. K. BLACK Gulf Service Station Forbes 81 Murray Pittsburgh, Pa. 15217 Tel. 521-2200 To The Underclassmen, At seventeen we have seen very little of life, but for the most part we have fallen in love with what we have found, except possibly, the curric- ulum. We may feel that a chemistry course is a needless burden since most of us will never become chemists. But, at this stage of our lives, how many of us really know what we want to be? Our lives are our own and we will direct them as we choose. Each of us possesses the virtue of hindsight, unfortunately, few of us can claim fore- sight. Our faculty, using their own hindsight, can recall the results of their own mistakes to advise us, and we, as seniors, can now advise you through our experience. Senior Class Room 203 Freshmen,do not consider high school instant maturity. Maturity comes slowly through willingness to accept others, as well as yourself. Sophomores, even though you are now in the awkward year of high school, do not grow com- placent. Make yourselves felt in the school, not by attracting attention but by meriting recognition. Juniors, when you become the seniors, look forward to your privileges, and also the responsi- bilities of leadership. To the student body, after we have left Saint Michael's, we will reminisce over the good times we had-realizing these were the only times we had. Seniors of 203 --1969 To Saint Michael High School: To our Alma Mater, our nourishing Mother , For this we bless you most, we, your chil- dren whom you have guided to the threshold of Life, you give much and know not that you give at all. You gave of your knowledge, revealing your hopes for us, and together we have formed visions yet to be seen. You have opened the door of the firmament to show us the colors and give us the desires. You have given us a deeper thirsting for Life, Hand surely there is no greater gift than that which turns aims into parching lips and all life into a fountain. Your heartbeats were in our hearts as you bore us and we must never let the tempo escape because it is the rhythm of Tomorrow! Mother, you are alive in us! You will live in our successes as we have grown in your experience. And ever has it been said that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation. Farewell to you and the youth we have spent with you. Our half-walking has turned into fuller day and we must part . . . and of your longing, we have built a tower in the sky. Mother, remember us for we have loved growth together. Saint Michael High School, our Alma Mater, we your children, Thank you. Seniors of 302 Senior Class Room 302-1969 101 Special Patrons Rev. Fr. In keeping with our theme, t'Development Through Education, our deepest grati- tude goes out to Father John Patrick Moore, our pastor, and Father Peter O'Rourke, our assistant, for the guidance shown in our development here at St. Michael. Special thanks to Sister M. Celestine and the faculty and Sister Mary Clare, our adviser, for all the interest, encouragement, and effort spent in aiding us in the production of this book. We would also like to thank those who were generous in financing our yearbook: the advertisers, business patrons, special patrons, and personal patrons, and to those students who reached their quota or went on to do more by becoming a booster. To Mr. A. Cardell, Mr. R. Stephens, and Cardell Studios, we extend our deepest appreciation, for the fine photography, and to Mr. Edward Ursprung and the staff of the William T. Cooke Publishing Company our sincere thanks for all their services rendered to us. May God bless and keep all those who have sacrificed their time for the benefit of this book.
