' I L O'ZEOl.TO'Z 'l'he essential difference between the Catholic schools and the public schools is not the forty hve minutes set apart for the daily religion period. Neither is religion pigeon-holed after the expiration of the al- loted class presentation. Since the whole curriculum is leavened by a Catholic phil- osophy of life, the interpretation of all the subjects is essentially Catholic. ll-'ith identical textbooks in the same sub- jects that are taught in the public schools, the Catholic interpretation is different and unique. Interpretation is essentially amat- ter of philosophy. X'Vit-h a Catholic back- ground and knowledge of the historical heritage of the church to clarify present day problems in the light of the past, the Catholic layman is being prepared to op- pose intelligently the collectivist theories of the totalitarian St2ltCS. A Problems of democracy and economic geography prepare Catholic students to take their places as intelligent voters since they provide the proper perspective to judge world relations according to Catholic prin- ciples of sociology. English in action classes, speech societies and student congresses pre- pare students to defend the truth that is in them. They will be articulate Catholic lay- men prepared to lead their fellowmen. T-he student 1llllSt be taught not only mathematics and commercial subjects to prepare 'him to make a living, but he also must be given opportunities to develop himself as a social being in order to attain his eternal destiny by living a happier and fuller life in time. All the subjects that ex- ercise his faculties tend to develop the whole man, which is the end and aim of Catholic education. Choral music and art classes for all t-he underclassmen, instrumentation and dra- matics for those exhibiting special apti- tudes, prepare the student to appreciate the fine arts through personal experience with them. The study of Latin equips the student to participate in the rich liturgy of 'his Church. A familiar-ity with the German language en- ables the student to acquaint himself with the rich heritage of the Old World Masters, both literary and musical. ' Since man is fundamentally gregarious, he must learn to work with a group and thus attain his highest destiny as a social being prepared to take his place in society. With this end in view, an integrated pro- gram of club activitiesis coordinated with the curricular subjects. To adapt the oppor- tunities for team work to the varied talents of the students as well as their taste, ath- letic, forensic, dramatic, choral, scientific, journalistic, instrumental, and recreational outlets are provided through the function- ing of these clubs. Leadership is also de- veloped because students must use their own initiative under the prudent direction of the various moderators. Throughout the whole curriculum, the Catholic theme is running like a golden thread weaving into the life of the student the realization that he is preparing himself for his eternal destiny and that this life is a proving ground for his life with God for all eternity for which he was created and brought into t'he world.
