To the right are the Sophomore class officers of '45 pictured as they discuss and plan material for a future class meeting. They are: Rose Styles, secretary: Sophie Svienty. vice-president: Victoria jaworski, presidentg Helen Pavlick, treasurer. Musical Contributors All through their school life, Norbert Pietrzak and' Louise Gralka have been dance partners. Their debut was made at the band recital in their Fresh- man year. They continued to dance their way to fame in all the band musi- cales thereafter.rThe linale in their Senior year was their dance duet in the i947 Musicale-Minstrel, culminating a busy season which opened with a per- formance in Then and Now, an Alumni production. Sue Svienty, a pianist of great promise, was the accompanist for every musical program held at St. Michaels since she entered there from Holy Cross where she received her musical education from the Sisters of Charity. Sue's ability and unselhsh service made her an invaluable asset to every musical entertainment. The climax of Sue's musical career was reached when she was elected president of the Glee Club. Memory Island ' Many social activities made our stay at St. Michael's a happy one. On the boat to Memory Island let us stop lirst at our Freshmen social. We see huge sparkling teeth protruding from enormous lips surrotntded by a black surface. We recognize at once the endmen for our first minstrel. Arlene Krugli is ready for her Carmen Miranda act and Eleanor Geskosky is trying to conceal her freckles without success. The tide is changing so let us continue on to our Sophomore year. The scene is one from the Gay Ninetiesf' the entertainment at the Sophotnore s cial. There stands Tony Obidzinski garbed in a villain suit with his curls tossing back and forth. Bob Schmitt sporting a curled mustache is waltzing with his Lady Fair. Now the boat is slowly drifting away and the last thing that can he seen is the Rabbis beard slowly fading from his face. We have tinally reached our junior year. The curtain slowly rises and there sitting on the stage is our German Choral Club, singing Du, Du. Everyone is holding a beer mug femptyj. Norbert and Louise are doing their Folk Dance. Sister Judith, our maestro. is seated in the audience hoping we Du, Du our best. We did. The journey continues till we have reached the Michaelinian Kingdom. There wc hnd King Edward Mours and his consort, Queen Victoria, dubbing the freshmen with diamond studded swords, as Knights of the Michaelinian Kingdom. This is part of the unique feature program prepared for the Fresh- men 'Wvelcome Social as pictured on page 39. Our journey will never end for we will always remember the wonderful years we have spent at St. Michaels.

None of the above entertainments were cotnplete withottt some display of musical talent either vocal or instrumental. So versatile are the songsters at St. Michael's that they perform in three languages. Latin, German. and English. The 1947 Musicale wit- nessed the addition of a fourth language. Polish. The musicale of the band this year took the form of a Musi- cale-Minstrel. featuring that raconteur, Donald G. Stchle as the interlocutor, aml Robert Gildea. as a negro endman. Other end- men who added to the droll entertainment were: Edward Mottrs, joseph Cancilla. and Robert Stiller. The glee club, who furnished the supporting chorus. opened the program and gave the linale interspersed with selections frotn the folk music of various countries. r Patriotic selections by the band were supplemented by national airs written by German and Polish Composers. Folk dances brought an old world charm to a minstrel whose fun and frolic recalled the plantation days of Old Uncle Ned and Uncle Remus. - 1 l, ' at Iunior-Senior JOl.l111iiliSlll Club The .junior journalists pictured on page 35 took over the publication of the Shield in February, I9-16. rechristening their paper, The 'Micallaf' Meetings were held monthly. pens scratched and typewriters clicked as the journalistic Honey of Ambitious Bees was manufactured. Not only was the reading public at S.M.H.S. satislied with the fruit of their labors but the excellent delineation of Catholic principles and philosophy earned for them the All-Catholic award of the Catholic Press Association. Thus a landmark was reached in the striving to produce a truly Catholic monthly paper: Student Council The lirst week of school witnessed the nomination of candi- dates for the three-party campaign. The Aw-Rite, the Nliz, and the Tip-Top l'arty's elforts to secure the Student Council election for its candidiates swept the school off its feet. Campaign-matv ager Arlene Krugh enlivened one of the meetings by having the mascot of the Tip-Top Party present. The bally-hoo of the Tip- Tops was counterbalanced by the dramatic speeches of Eddie Mours. manager of the Wiz Party. However. the election held September 20. ISHS. was a landslide for the Tip-Top Party, as their candidate for the presidency. Louise Cralka tstanding lefty. and Helen Pavlick, vice-president. were elected. The other two parties were represented in the Council by their candidates Vir- ginia Gross. of the .-Xw-Rite Party, as Secretary. and Dorothy Krappweis. of the iViz Party, as Treasurer. XMZ N.. Meetings of the local branch are held monthly. Often special meetings are called as the need arises. All extra-curricular and club activities of the high school are arranged by the officers, necessary per- missions are obtained. and the faculty and Reverend Director are informed pf the wishes of the student body. Under the auslicei of the Council. the Sttl- dents of St. Michael's participate in the honor soci- eties of the Federation which lead lo scholarships in the specialized fields of history, literary endeavor, and science. The Councils very active president, Louise Cralka, sponsored the pep meetings which preceded league games to encourage student support of the teams. In addition. recreational facilities were made available and a bowling league was established. S-T-R-I-K-E y The bowling league was the most popular recrea- tional club sponsored by this year's council. The familiar cry- S-T-R-I-K-E was heard every Suri- day evening at the Arcade Bowling Alleys from November 24, 1946 to February 16, 1947, when the last duck pin was knocked over by nlembers of the league. In their own league. Robert Stiller's Hot Rocks and jimmy Reich's Beavers won the lirst and second halves. respectively. The Beavers attto- matically won the play-off by forfeit. Finally, the season was brought to a close by par- ticipation in the American Rubber and Duckpin Association tottrnament. The six boys boasting the highest averages represented their Alma Mater in competition with twenty-four other high school leagues. The result of the tournament left St. Michaels in thirteenth place.
