August found President Rice grabbing a moment ' s rest in his hammock, a gift of the ' 78- ' 79 student body, before the mad rush of the ' 79- ' 80 year. New Spider member Amy Bridger pa- tiently accepts the brutality of old member Beth Mattocks. SCHOOL DAZE The first few weeks of school drifted into routine for many, but for a large part of the school they were fun, exciting, and quite dif- ferent. Welcomed by the hospi- tality of NCSU and UNC-CH campus dorms, fraternity rush parties, and Hillsborough Street, students grasped every escape plan. The slap in the face of col- lege costs, dorm life, and aca- demic load put a sudden damper on the social life after a while. Clubs and organizations began inductions and the first semester was halfway over. Anxious sophomores Ellison Jones and Lisa Gattis await freshmen with buckets full of water. STARTING THE YEAR OFF RIGHT The academic year of 1 979-1 980 started off in the traditional college way. Students flocked in from vari- ous places around the world ready to take on St. Mary ' s college life. Packed with everything imaginable, many eager students were intro- duced to a different lifestyle. Busy summer planning and care- ful organization assured the suc- cessful head start for Orientation this year. A hardworking admin- istration minimized the piles of paperwork and long lines. The easy phone installations, successful student arrivals, and ori- entation schedules allowed us to slowly slide into our busy routine days. Special gatherings such as the SGA ice cream party, advisor advisee conferences, dorm intramu- rals, and chapel services famil- iarized the students with their new surroundings. Thanks to organiza- tion and student cooperation, the year began in the right direction. Patience was the key to a busy schedule as Nancy Brooks, Elizabeth Brooks, and Kara Campbell waited tor their appointment.
