OLD DAYS Stagecoach 1975-76 St. Mary ' s College Raleigh, N.C. Take me back to a world gone away. Memories seem like yesterday . . . Funny faces, full of fun and laughter Old days, on my mind and in my heart to stay Old days, darkened dreams of good times gone away Old days, days of love and feeling fancy free i y 10 is x v. Old days, days of magic still so close to me 12 Old days, good times I remember, Gold days, days I ' ll always treasure 15 The 1975-76 STAGECOACH is dedicated to FRANK WARREN PISANI Our President, Our Friend WE ' VE ONLY JUST BEGUN Remember your first impression of St. Mary ' s? You were called to countless meetings and welcomed by every single person imaginable. Schedules were to- tally confusing and learning everyone ' s name was virtually impossible. The first week was crammed full of meetings and endless discussions with Registrar Mr. Johnson. During the day. girls made nu- merous trips to nearby shopping centers in hopes of making their dorm rooms more comfortable. Every evening held some sort ol entertainment. There was the talent show and the first experience with the Cold Cuts. Also, there was the Big Sister-Little Sister picnic. Girls would find their sisters and wait in line lor hamburgers and hotdogs. While sitting on the grass and finishing their meal, the girls began to feel more at ease at St. Marv ' s. If hile studying for the handbook test. Freshman Sally Pelletier struggles with learning the sehool song. On a hot August clay, students gather in front of Smedes to collect orientation information. Dr. Pisani and SGA President Barksdale Spencer discuss plans for the upcoming year. i i A After a counselors IMmtSr meeting, girls return to their halls to make door decorations. SG.4 officers and coun- selors await the arrival of new students. Day Student Carta Chappell walks toward the Student Union to buy books for her classes. .J -. While working on a term paper. Sophomore Anna Neal Blan- chard studies in the library. In order lo get to her next class on lime. Lisa Janes leai es Rag- lan I a little earh. DAY STUDENTS A Day Student ' s day begins a little he- fore a boarder ' s since she must set the alarm clock earlier in order to arrive at school on lime. She usually pets to Si. Man ' s just in time lo struggle for that last parking space anil rush to her first morning class where she can catch up on the latesl scoop with her friends. Then, between classes, the day Students usually congregate in their own little house, where a great deal of their spare time is spent. The Day Student ' s house is a cen- ter for a variety of activities. Included among these activities are watching the soaps, running to McDonalds, kicking the drink machines, making popcorn and last but not least, opening an occasional book. A Day Student can be involved in school life as she chooses. Often times, a very active girl may lead a hectic life, running back and forth between home and her home awav from home. How- ever, she wouldn ' t trade this way of life for anything in the world. In the Day Student House, Sophomore Anna T. Webb grabs a book while Senior Anne Harrington memorizes her lines for drama. At the end of the day, Bryan Pittman and Bei Barksdale head for the Day Student House. Prejerring their beds to the library, counselors Kate Taylor and Betsy Armstrong pause while studying. Clowning around after quiet hours, Julie Kim Little entertains U est Rock Dorm. 24 NEVER A DULL MOMENT A typical day al St. Marys is usually crammed full of classes, meetings, and various extra events. There is never a dull moment, for the halls of the dorms are always buzzing with excitement. From the time you wake up, you are in contact with your roommates, friends and teach- ers. Usually, you meet someone in the bathroom brushing her teeth, and you have time for a quick hello. When you are not in class or in a meeting, there is an occasional spare moment to lake a walk around campus. After dinner, it ' s on to the library to study or back to the dorm to attempt to do so. Finding count- less ways to avoid studying by visiting with a friend and having a ' long talk or just playing in general, those all-night- ers of cramming and typing needless to say become inevitable. Finally, it ' s bed- time and the wee hours of the night ap- proach. Thus ends a typical day in the life of St. Mary ' s girl. Sitting outside on the library steps, Rebecca Clark takes a coke break while correcting notes. COLD CUTS The Cold Cuts are a uniquely original organization. Their performances are all done mi a volunteer basis and their only rewards are the smiles ami enjoyment they bring to others. Thev make contri- butions to the Raleigh community by us- ing their talents to perform for various civic groups. In addition, thev also per- form at elementary schools in the vicin- itv. The girls put a lot of hard work, time and energy into making the group an en- tertaining and successful one. Thev learn lots of new songs as well as playing the old familiar favorites. The many hours of devotion, and hard work, and rushing through dinner to make it to practice on lime are greatly appreciated by the Stu- dent Body, for whom the Cold Cuts play in assemblies throughout the school year. The Cold Cuts also play at special events around school. The parents also get to enjoy the Cold Cuts on extra special days such as Mother-Daughter Day and Fa- ther-Daughter Day. Therefore. Cold Cuts are a big part of student life. During Cold Cut inductions, the last seven eat supper while Cold Cuts June Johnson, Lou W lute, and Julie Martin observe. At the recording studio, Cold Cut members prepare to rut their al- bum Singing in t h e S u n s hine with the Cold Cuts . 26 In their last assembly, Cold Cuts sing Forbidden Fruit . Before first semester exams, studen t s gather in Smedes parlor for the an- nual Christmas party given b the Circle and Beacon. MAGIC MOMENTS Magic moments are what St. Mary ' s is made of. These moments can surprise you at anytime whether it be a moment of solitude or in thai unique instant of closeness between besl friends, it will surely evolve into those special moments which seem to he touched with a hint of mystery. Words are hardly adequate to relate the sudden electricity of excite- ment, or the tears of jov that can only be described as a magic moment. ANYTHING GOES Annie Johnson and Angels, Melinda Shepherd and Lou- ise Whitmire join in their col- orful number Heaven Hop. ' The St. Marys Drama Club fall pro- duction of Anything Goes enter- tained peers, parents and college pa- trons as only a Cole Porter musical could. The delightful and often com- plicated plot of romance and criminal disquise was aided by such spirited tunes as Blow Gabriel Blow and It ' s Delovely, Moonface Martin (Ron Armstrong), Reno Sweaney (Carla Chappell), Bonny (Annie John- son) and the Angles joined their worldly forces with the naviety of Sir Evelyn (Gleen Miller), Billy (Roy Dicke), Hope (Anne Boyle), and Mrs. Harcourt (Frances Schultz) to sing and dance their way to another St. Mary ' s stage success. Carla Chappell as Reno Sweeney is finally destined to settle down as she agrees to marry Sir Eve- lyn Oakleigh played bv Gleen Miller. flirt they bid The angels farewell on their voyage aboard the S.S. American. FATHER-DAUGHTER DAY Liz and her dad take time out to pose for us. A very special day which is set aside each year where the fathers get a chance to be- come St. Mary ' s girls. The fathers audit classes, attend special events such as the per- formance by the dance groups, a tennis match, and a chapel service. At dinner the fathers were entertained by the Cold Cuts and afterwards attended the Drama Club ' s production of Anything Goes. It was indeed a special day for everyone. Circle and Beacon goodies at the party. Friends and fun are a great part of Christmas at St. Mary ' s. Christmas is a definitely a jolly time for everyone at St. Mary ' s. The eventful time starts off with everyone pick- ing peanuts ami .shells. A pea- nut is someone you give a gift to and you are their shall. Surceys ( meanful objects usually under a dollar) are given for about a week then a hall party is usually held where a final present is given to your peanut. At the end of the week there is a tradi- tional Christmas party given by the Circle and Beacon in Smedes parlor. Everyone comes dressed in Christinas costumes such as presents, re- indeer, Christmas trees, and many other things. There is a special visit by Santa Clause (Mr. Tate) and the Cold Cuts. The Cold Cuts played many old time favorites such as Rudolph the Red Nose Rein- deer with Rudolph being per- sonally there, alias Dcnise Fellos, and Frosty the Snow- man was also there, alias Peggy Manly. The night ended with everyone having a good time and a little fatter from all the goodies that they had eaten. A 37 FRESHMAN-SOPHOMORE DANCE ' Emily Warren sits down for a romantic talk with her date. Everyone enjoys dancing, to the music of the Embers. h. Everyone loves a fling at least once in Paris. Leigh Doyle and her escort take time out for refresh- ments. JHIJWU i Emily Warren and Mable Geohagen with their dates enjoy watching couples danre. In a French atmosphere couples dance to Colour My World I could have danced all night The freshman— Sophomore dance is a traditional dance given by the Freshman to the Sophomores eaeh year. The dance was held in the cafeteria on February 14th with music by the Embers. Before the dance everyone goes to the Angus Barn to eat. The theme of the dance this year was ' Night in Paris 7 39 NIGHT MUST FALL An emotional scene as Dora (Catherine Car- roll) finds out (he truth about Dan (Art Anderson.) Te n s i o n m o unts a s Olivia (Annette Banks). Dora (Cath- erine Carroll) and Mrs. Terance (Nancy Tri[ f ) search the luggage of Dan, the mysterious new addition to the family. • -j .-■:-.-.-.; v ' . 4 Mrs. Bramson (Marjol- ijn Werman) expresses her obvious disap- proval with a touch of tyranny as Mrs. Ter- rance (Nancy Tripp) and Hubert (Larry Bliss) observe. The Dramatics Club succeeded in tingling the spines of several audiences with their performance of Emyln Wil- liam ' s suspenseful mystery, Night Must Fall. The play dealt with the story of an innocent looking homici- dal murderer (Dan) in the house of a tvranical and self centered elderly lady. The audience is able to gather, fairly early in the play, that Dan has committed one murder. The terrifying question is . . . Will he do it again ' : 1 The tension mounts as the clement of romance enters into the set already clouded with murder. The tyrannical Mrs. Bramson was convincingly por- trayed by Dr. Marjnlijn Werman, she has financially trapped her niece Olivia into becoming her companion. Olivia was a beautiful and most believ- able performance by Annette Banks. Olivia is torn between her reluctant love for Dan who was portrayed with emmende talent and sensitivity by Art Anderson, and her mounting fear for her own life. Thus with the closing of the curtain each audience tended to leave with a little less trust in the dark, but also with the warmth that can be generated only by the magic of a believable and unique work of art. The cast of Night Must Fall pose for a family picture. Not pic- tured Gyunn Miller who played the nurse. JUNIOR-SENIOR PARTY Who said that Juniors don ' t know how to party? See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, . . . you ve got to be kidding!! . . . ttnrf we ' ve been friends through thick and thin. ' There ' s got to be a morning after! We ' ve got to stop meet- ing tike thus . . . P is for party. A is for all night long, R is lor right on, T is for turn me on. Y is lor ya ' ll come, PARTY!!! That ' s ex- actly what everyone did the night of the Ju- nior-Senior party. Everyone was a little wary of the day from the beginning since it was April Fool ' s Day. The S.G.A. soon found this out when they received little gifts from 3rd penthouse. Then it was time for all the seniors to to go to the party. The seniors were given a map to fCatherine Woolens house, hut when they arrived they were given hats that the Juniors had made and were told that thev had the wrong house and were given another map. The Seniors figured that this would happen being April Fool ' s Day. The Seniors continued on to Cathy Christian ' s house where the party started off with a bang. There was plenty of refreshments and everyone had a great time. SEA SAINTS SHOW The Sea Saints obviously enjoy their opening num- ber as much as their au- dience does. The Sea Saints swim into one of the formations of t h v i r op e n i n g n it mber Caberet. Lucy Eastwood, Kath- eleen Yelton and Becky Ensign attempt to relax backstage before the show. Could it be Jaws??: Three Sea Saints discuss possible outcomes of their opening night to come. S.M.C. ' s mermaids ' . 1 .? Yes, life is a cabaret . . . This idea was clearly shown bv the Sea Saints in their spring show. The show was choregraphed from such songs as Camelot. All Good Gifts , and Feeling Groovy which exemplified their theme ' Collogue of Life. The group is composed of 14 girls with their president being Barbie Jordan. The Letter Club is the honorary athletic so- ciety of St. Man ' s which recognizes girls with outstanding skill or participation in all aspects of athletics. To become eligible for member- ship a girl must accumulate a total of 200 points through participation in various activi- ties. New members are recognized throughout the year in assembly. The Letter Club sells St. Mary ' s gym shorts and sweatshirts. The profit from these sales is used to purchase a gift for the school at the end of each year. The club also sponsors a banquet near the end of the year at which time the final awards are presented by the president and the new mem- bers of the club. The president of the Letter fub this vear is Kllvn Faircloth. 134 CHEERLEADERS Cheerleaders: (L to Ft) Martin Smith, Joan Petit, Holly Harris. They eheer at all of the games and throughout the year they have held several pep rallies at assembly. The cheer- leaders have had many projects this year. They sold spirit chain links to create student interest and they made many banners and posters to promote team spirit at various games, meets and matches. At the end of each season, the cheerleaders gave a party for the members of each team. They have contributed much of their time, effort, and energy to life here at St. Mary ' s. These societies give students the opportunity to participate in many different sports throughout the year. The year begins with a big rally on back campus where the students arc placed on a team for life. The first match, which was held in Chape] Hill, included in it a variety of schools, such as Duke, Wake Forest, and U.N.C. Then, for the second match. St. Marys team traveled to Wake Forest. This match. too, involved teams from various schools. St. Mary ' s was also represented at the State Tournament bv Laura Frazier. 137 BASKETBALL TEAM The St. Mary ' s Basketball tram got off to a slow start this year. One reason being that it did not have a coach until two weeks be- fore its first game an l the other reason being that it got stuck with a real tough schedule. Its new Coach. ivian Craig, came in with a lot of enthusiasm and really tried to get things going. The team had long, hard practices but a lot of fun too (especially on the road trips, right team!). Although its vic- tories were not numerous the team finalh got it all together and won its last game of the season by heating a team who had beaten Peace just several weeks earlier. This was probably the high point of the season. . . ._ — . . . f id i top to bottom, left to right, Betsy I (inn. Hunter Dorteh, Rebecca Clarke, Katie Cole, Margaret Jones. Margaret Scott. St. Mary ' s is proud of you!!! 139 SWIM TEAM r n n o o A 1 ; acr This year St. Mary ' s swim team improved tremendously mainly for the reason that the girls on the team were dedicated. At the end of the season the team had won three meets, tied one. and lost two; nev- ertheless, the team swam extremely well at the two meets they lost. St. Mary ' s swam against much larger teams such as N.C. State and E.C.LI. However, next year things will change because our new coach, Mrs. Sappenfield, knows her job. She is a compassionate person as well as a motivator. Hopefully, the swim team ' s facilities will improve. A short time after the new member joined, the dance clubs performed for the fathers. This was followed by Fall Festival in Pittman Auditorium on November 13th and 14th. The dance clubs latter took the show to Dorothea Dix hospital and the Triangle Correctional Center where they were enthusiastically re- ceived-bare legs and the loss of Carter Warren ' s Skirt were especially appreciated by the inmates. Spring Festival celebrated the many movies of Walt Disney. The dance clubs also participated in a community performance in Stew- art Theater. On April 27th. In addition each dance club performed in the Raleigh area individually. Caperettes gave two performances for Wake Forest Elementary School. Orchesis presented a program for a small, but appreciative audience at Glecnwood Towere. In February they presented the Sunday morning church service with the extra treat of live music by Lou White and Me- linda Shepherd. On April 25th, Orchesis repeated the service for Rever- end Davis ' church in Henderson. Scottish Dancers were in great demand this year. They gave two perfor- mances at A.V. Baleom School, Two at J.Y. Joyner, Two at Lewis Powell, and two at Adams Elementary where they were so popular they were asked to come back for two more performances. They earned delicious cookiers at the X.Y.Z. club performance and a friendly smile from the governor ' s wife at the N.C.
