In a sense the 1952 Stack Coach is a visual definition of Saint Mary ' s : what outsiders might see of the school if they looked enough and examined the record. But for students, especially Seniors, the pictures herein are only reminders of memories which lie deeper than pictures. For the enduring values which you may detect in word and picture, we, Editor Anna and Business Manager Mary Dubose, proudly present this annual, confident that the smiles, the cheers, the lectures, the books, the meetings and the friends symbolize, if they do not define, Saint Mary ' s and A Year in the Grove. As Secretary to the Bookstore and Postoffice she has been a beloved part of Saint Mary ' s for many years. Always kind, always helpful in every way, she has shown her genuine interest in our life at Saint Mary ' s and is truly a warm friend of all the girls in school- It is with a great deal of pleasure, gratitude, and love that we dedicate the 1952 Stage Coach to MISS BESSIE BROWN Smedes Hall The Chapel Holt Hall Dining Room and Gymnasium The Auditorium The Infirmary ®(D©©©®®®® ®®©@© ©® L ADMINISTRATION RICHARD G. STONE President A.B., Western Maryland College; Ph.D., The Johns Hopkins University. Saint Mary ' s 19-16-. He is the personification of interest in Saint Mary ' s. We thank him for guidance in bringing understanding and friendship between faculty and students and furthering ideals and principals inspired by this personal contact. 10 I. HARDING HUGHES When years have passed, the memo- ries of Mr. Hughes, his cheerfulness, his friendliness, and his sincerity, will never leave our hearts. His personal interest in helping each girl to enrich her life in every way is one of the main reasons for the respect and admiration which every Saint Mary ' s girl has for Mr. Hughes. MARTHA DABNEY JONES Her understanding and love towards Saint Mary ' s and each girl have helped to promote friendliness within the school and admiration for the school. Her kindness, helpfulness, guidance, and effi- ciency will not soon he forgotten by any of us who attend Saint Mary ' s. We owe our gratitude and respect to Miss Jones, our Dean. Where shall I start cleaning? Here with this stack of old papers, I guess. My, how dust does collect. What ' s this? My old S.M.S. SCrapbook. Here ' s an old snapshot taken on the first day of school, 1950. How well I remember ! that mad confusion! Every- one was wide-eyed with excitement dashing wildly about, and those endless matriculation lines. . . . That night we felt a strange friendliness being together at the end of our first day in college. I could hardly believe it, but that week I awoke to reality during those endless Iowa state tests. . . . Wonder what they found out about me? From then on I was swept up in a whirlwind of activity. At the Old-girl New-girl reception I found myself half tongtied being pushed a long line of smiling faces. College classes were no holiday. A mixture of themes, Thomas Hardy, French verbs, and amoebas floated through my mind. Oh, here ' s my Halloween mask ! I remember how I donned my witche ' s cap, bobbed for apples, and had my fortune told — Good times ! it said. And how true! Between my mental exertions I found time for Toddle House cheeseburgers, two-minute taxi rides to the Ambassador, and Carolina weekends— those little bits of heaven ! Then Thanks- giving, home, and turkey. The three weeks following found me back in class with my knitting (argiles, of course), playing Juliet to my State Romeo and groping my way downstairs in our famous midnight fire drills. Soon White Christmas was heard in all the halls. The Glee Club polished up for their concert. And the Sunday before vaca- tion we filed into Chapel to see the Christmas pageant carried out with the traditional candlelight and pine. The seniors woke us with carols vacation morn and a few hours later we peeped through bags and boxes to wave good-by to our roomies shouting, Happy holidays ! And happy they were! and curtains pennants and pin-ups, records and roomies. We took off for test raids— Iowa State — but quickly returned to home base— the bridge tabic in Holt parlor. We shot the works at our enemies, but some of them were pretty tough, such as the C.T. in M.E., (Canterbury Tales in Middle English), and were conquered only after devouring twenty commentaries and an all night discussion (on our new late-light privileges.) Halloween was a perfect scream. Mother Goose had quite a brainy brood. Then there was the shortage— time and water ! Soon, again, Thanksgiving, home, and turkey. Upon our return the Senior Dance claimed more of our time and toil. Our dreamy Night Before Christmas passed quickly. The days that followed brought more frost and frolic. By that time I was through Hell (in the B.C.) and had hope! That Christmas, Alice was lovely as Mary in our pageant. After coffee and donuts we set off with cold noses singing carols in the grey of dawn on vacation day. Here ' s my woolen mitten c overed with candle wax — Fond, fond memories ! Back to school and exams again. . . . Spenser and Chaucer stood between us and graduation. The cramming sessions in Holt parlor lasted until four — with Faerie Queen and No-Doze as never before. As our senior year continued, we continued struggling — with English 31. We had tables in the dining room and front seats in chapel. We spent hours at the Ambassador and at the bridgi table, and even more hours in the library. Here ' s a play bill from Miss Davis ' production of Seventeen. In our spare time we read love magazines and solved logic problems. Girl-breaks, basketball games, and Circle walks highlighted the weeks until spring vacation. . . . Then those frantic first semester exams ! My European history book and I spent the night in the closet. I was scared — but somehow lived through and vowed to study next semester . . . but played bridge instead and was campused for illegal late lights. This crepe paper wisteria brings back memories of our Deep Purple Junior-Senior and our May Day over the rainbow. For weeks we planned every moment of our first week-end. To leave on Friday was truly bliss ! Slaving on our documented papers, we copied blue books, scattered note cards, and feared plaguerism. History maps, Mid-Winters, stuffed animals, trig problems, page duty, Miss Jones ' list, daily chapel services, and Sigtna-Mu games flash through my mind. This commencement program completes my memories of our fine junior year. September, 1951. The sun turned to ice. Black became white. The impossible happened. We were seniors ! The mass invasion of Holt began. Bare rooms became tiny homes, alive with clothes I turned the page. The Flagstad concert program was pasted beside a tap dance routine. We had an extra-long spring vacation — nine whole days . . . and made good use of every minute. I saw a pressed Easter corsage and remembered the beauty of the chapel services that happy Easter day. Beneath an old reading card and Tom Jones test, I found a campus slip — offense: taking a reserve book out at 9:28. I had saved a copy of the May Day program. How beautifully Pat reigned over our Toyland! Our Junior-Senior was truly one to remember. Here ' s a bid— oh ! sweet memories! A page of snap- shots — a scene from the Shakespearian play, Apey ' s leadership in our senior follies, Letitia ' s concert, a dorm scene, a hall party, the Glee Club concert, our class day, the step singing, the Com- mencement procession, the handkerchief falling. . . . The book ended, but my memories of Saint Mary ' s will never end. 22 Class Prophecy Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Station S.M.S now brings you a fifteen minute pill of the top news of the day. Hut first, a word from our sponsor. Locadah (Hadacol spelled backwards) is not an ordinary medicine, for it cures anything and anybody. Just today we received two letters from two of our customers. Jeannie Patterson, Nell Boone Grafton both report that they have never seen such a quick and ever-lasting remedy as Locadah. Just one bottle and you are looking at the world through rose- colored glasses again. So try our wonderful product and see if you too do not see the rapid change. And, ladies, it tastes good too. For a look at international news, we find that Katherine Mel- cher, U. S. ambassador to Brazil, is still down thar ' bargaining for more bananas, but she sorrowfully reports the Brazilians as saying again, Yes, we have no bananas. ' 1 Across the Atlantic to Europe, our ambassador to France, Marion Faison, has aban- doned her duties in Paris and is enjoying a short vacation at the Rivera. Barbara Taylor, who is still conducting her world- wide research on Why the Divine- Comedy is so devine, is now in Florence, Italy, where she hopes to find her answer. Good luck to a swell seeker ! In Washington our President Alice Hicks is having trouble with the Supreme Court. Ann Patterson, Chief Justice, and the two foremost members of the Court, Gillie Martin and Ann Fitzgerald , will not give in to the President. The case that is causing all the trouble is the U. S. vs. Sally Hackney and Mary Debose Watson. It all started when one of the two told some secret national plans on how the U. S. was going to capture the Stratosphere. The controversy is which party told. Ruth Mines, the F.B.I, lady on the case, reports, This prese nts a good logic question. Were they in an elevator? Chief Justice Patterson- has planned for another hearing tonight. Her reason — she has to bake a cake this afternoon. Just what the court and the President will decide is hard to tell, but it is going to be a fight to the finish. In New York today Laura Hays was awarded the title of Miss Rosebud of 1980. Mary Dorsett ran a close second but ended up only as a narcissus. Sue Ann Sadler, the renown fashion designer, planned both the models wardrobes, and each had, of course, a furlined middy blouse, Miss Sadler ' s specialty. These middy hlouses are rapidly sweeping the nation (hope they clean it up). On their last T.V. program Ann McCitlloch and Clair Boone, the Toni Twins, wore these hlouses, and the effect was very stunning! Letitia House and Nancy Murray made their comeback last night at the Met where they presented the opera La Sainta Maria Scholia, a sad tale of boarding school life. They gave a wonderful performance and were quickly accepted by the puhlic. Much to the nations regret there has occurred another riot in New York. The night club Hotsie Totsie was the center of the turmoil, and the instigators were none other than those red-head Flaming Mamies Ann Benton and Ann Harless. They offered no excuse, but frankly stated, The place was too dead — -we wanted some action. Again detective Mines is on the job. She really gets around. And now to Hollywood where we get the latest dirt on the movie stars from Buncy Hedda Hopper Robinson. She reports that Actress Helen Setzer has just completed her latest flicker which is entitled Assembly Dismissed. Lane Buckly and Alice Jones make their dancing debut in this picture, and they are very good. They got their start in Orchesis at Saint Mary ' s School . Miss Robinson has no criticism of the picture except she does say that now she appreciates Miss Setzer in orange. As we reported to you yesterday, Miss Setzer would not allow the picture to be made in technicolor but insisted upon orangitint. Song writer Bootie Pento-n has recently published what she terms as her bestest and lastest song. The song, Dont chop the Wood, Mother Fin Bringing Home A Load Tonight, is becoming the number one tune of the nation and has many promises in the future. What kind of promises we hate to say. In North Carolina the scene is just about the same. Governor Mary Ann Eaddy has appointed Ann Ptntou and Margaret Cheatham to survey the distances between Richmond and Wil- mington and Henderson and Martinsville, Virginia, respectively. There seems to have been a disturbance as to which of these four cities is the closest to Raleigh. No conclusion has been reached as ye t, but Cheatham and Penton are steadily measuring every day. FLASH ! ! ! We have just received word from Washington that Ann, Stewart- who has weighed u ' 7 pounds for the last thirty years has at last added a pound ! We know that our listeners will be overjoyed at this news. Congratulations Ann! At the Sir Walter Hotel the Fifty-two Pick-up Club is spon- soring a State-wide bridge tournament. The struggle started today. The most favored table composed of Virginia. Allen, May Bolton, and Jess Gant, is still hollering for their fourth. Could Martha Bridger be late again? Three Raleigh housewives, Janet Harris, Audrey Campbell, and Laura Holoman, have won the Nation-wide contest on the program Crack the Vault by an- swering the question, Who is buried in Grants tomb? The answer, of course, as revealed by the three ladies is Lee. They received many wonderful prizes, but the one most appreciated was a hundred complete volumes of English Literature ranging from Bede to Shakespeare. What more could they ask for? Into the realm of the unknown and interplanetory news, we hear that Daring Peggie Costner has found a new mineral on Mars. She sails it the Jack rock and believes that this specie will revolutionize the world. Nancy Dawson, Loin Perry, and Mai Stewart who recently took off on their rocket ship The Do Or Die have not reported any discoveries so far. They are now en route to the Sun where they plan to join with Edith Cross and Betsy Clarke. These two scientists are in the midst of an experiment with the Vitamin Bomb. From there they will travel to Mercury to hear Dr. Pant ' s lecture on the Paul Theory which is based on a recently discovered error in Einstein ' s Theory. Now for another word from our sponsor. We don ' t have to tell you how good Locadah is because here is a letter from Jan Winders to verify what we would say. Miss Winders says, I liked Locadah from the first minute that I saw the purple and pink polka-dotted bottle. I made up my mind right at the beginning and when I ever make up my mind, you can be sure that I ' m right. So, you see, folks, people just like you and me are using this grand product and are benefitting from their in- dulgence. Try it once and you ' ll never forget it. Now for the latest on sports. It seems that sports have taken a new turn this season. We aren ' t quite sure which way they are turning but it is for certain, they are going around in ciK;I ,. - All- American Coacli Beeps Buchanan- is planning to carry her football team (single-handed) to play against the All European team in Iceland this week. Her two star players, Pat Boesser and Sandy Donaldson, are reported as being in excellent shape for the game. Anna Redding, the famous sports commentator, will accompany them and will broadcast the game. The outcome of the game will be of interest to everyone all over the world. All we can say is Don ' t get nervous, Coach. Ann Nelson, the director of the weather, forecasts a Sunny day today. She also adds that the weather from here on out looks sunny. Thank you, Miss Nelson. This concludes our news broadcast for the day, but we will be back someday, someway, with more current events and special happenings. ' Till then, these are your roving reporters Helen Sanders and Shepherd Rustin with Mr, C. A. P. Moore in Master Control wishing you a fond adieu. 23 Last Will and Testament We, the senior class, being sound of mind and body, have come to the realizat ' on that soon Saint Mary ' s School will lose its foremost leaders, its most inspirational characters, its very backbone; this said institution of learning must somehow carry ui without those who are essential. The fact is, we are about to depart, and S. M. S. must go on as a stately oak that remans proudly upright although many of its lovely boughs have been hewn. Because of this reason we deem it necessary to bequeath the following blessings and possessions to our fortunate bene- ficiaries, to wit : Article I To Dr. Stone, we leave our thanks for the many new petitions that he granted this year. To Miss Jones, we leave a bottle of Bromo-Seltzer, three months to recuperate, and the hope that Senior classes like ours will be few and far between. To Mr. Moore, we leave a sufficient number of Eskimo parkas to be distributed to his classes during the winter months.
