Jr. School Physician 12 r- STUDENT GOVERNMENT 13 MARGARET MANN SWINDELL President, Student Governme nt Association ELIZABETH TRAVIS MYATT Vice President, Student Government Association ELIZABETH ANN BLUNDON Secretary, Student Government Association STUDENT OFFI Being president of Student Gov- ernment is not only a constantly demanding task, but often a difficult and unpleasant one; yet Peggy, with an innate dignity and an unflagging effort to give the most in understand- ing to every girl has fulfilled it admirably. The vice-president is very much a public relations officer, and per- haps the fact that Liddy Bet has the gift of getting along with everybody accounts for much of Student Gov- ernment ' s success this year. Betsy is as well known for her subtle humor as for the able job that she, as secretary, does to keep Student Government running smoothly. 14 GOVERNMENT ERS It takes a good deal of coolness under fire to contend with a year of late lights, slept-through-break- fasts, and town slips, but Mar ' et just opens up that Norfleet grin, ef- ficiently sets matters right, and takes it all in her stride. What astonishes everyone is the startling contrast between Woolie ' s pixie personality and her dignified capability as secretary of the Hall Council. Betsy-Tom handles Day Student matters with a matter-of-fact ease and an exuberant vitality which quickly dispenses with any problem. MARGARET GARY NORFLEET Chairman, Hall Council HELEN WLILIGER BOYLE Secretary, Hall Council BETSY-TOM LAWRENCE President, Day Students 15 THE HONOR COUNCIL The Honor Council, the most respected, yet least encountered organization in school, is the cornerstone of Student Government. Its job is the firm maintenance of basic principles and s tandards of the school, and to its efficiency and good judgment is due much of what Saint Mary ' s has come to stand for. 16 The most active and essential of the Student Government organizations, the Hall Council directs the policies concerning dormitory life. By its capable enforcement of necessary regula- tions and practical solutions of day-to-day problems, this group makes it possible to place the maintenance of hall discipline almost entirely in the hands of the girls themselves. THE HALL COUNCIL 17 THE LEGISLATIVE BODY The Legislative Body, organized by the students, of the students, and for the students, is Saint Mary ' s answer to the democratic ideal. Feeling that each girl deserves a voice in the system that regulates her school life, this council receives and considers submitted petitions. It is thus a plastic organ of adjustment to changing times and conditions. ' s YWGA Council The Y, originally organized for those not of the Episc opal Church, is now open to all. The council, headed by Sara Mell Smith, leads this group in religious activities and plans for visiting lecturers and dinner meetings at the Hut. Woman ' s Auxiliary Council Episcopal girls, led by Cynthia McCaw. comprise the Wom- an ' s Auxiliary which has this year not only conducted the traditional Thompson Orphan- age Drive, but also sold school blazers. It is composed of those girls who have, in their lan- gvage subject, maintained an average of B- - with no lower than B on other subjects. The Glee Club Saint Mary ' s points ivith pride to the excellent per- formances of its Glee Club. Political Science Club This group, di- rected by Mr. Guess and Betsy Dempsey, is composed of eco- nomics, history, sociology, and gov- ernment students who are interested in broadening their conception of world affairs. Famed for their reversible circle initiation, the Club sponsors Posture Week and the athletic banquet at which the plaque is awarded. 65 HOCKEY During the fall weather the hockey field echoes with the ring of stick against ball and spirited encouragement from the sidelines. In ' 46, the Mu ' s defeated the Sigmas in two consecutive games, thereby winning the tournament. BASKETBALL ' ' Charging! calls Miss Graham as the game becomes a little too enthusiastic. The after-Christmas basketball season always brings out the sportswomen in crowds to try for the Sigma and Mu teams and the coveted all-star. SWIMMING Proving its supe- riority in speed and form, the swimming team took high hon- ors in the Inter-Col- legiate Play Day. BADMINTON Loudly advocated by its adherents, badminton is be- coming more and more popular as a campus pastime. TENNIS Tennis ranks high among favorite sports, and this year Saint Mary ' s was hostess for the ten- nis tournament dur- ing the Inter-Col- legiate Play Day.
