MARTINS COLLEGE Frank Sinclair first arrived on Lacey scenes back in 1940 when he came to Washington from his Berkley, California home to play football for St. Martin ' s College under Homer Hein. Martian coach, and former Berkleyite. Frank started his college football career in a sensational manner by being nominated for honor- able-mention on the Little All-American and also receiving a spot on the All-Winco team. His next season with the Saints was much the same as his first season with the exception that the name of Sinclair received more and more attention throughout gridiron circles in the Northwest. It was during this season that Frank was leading kicker in the nation throughout most the season but he was not accorded the punt- ing honors due to a mixup in submitting statistics. In 1942 he played outstanding ball tor Jimmy Ennis ' pepper-pot team and found his mark as one of the better passers on the coast by chucking many TD passes to Fran Bacoka. Sinclair spent a tour of duty as a pilot during the war and returned to perform more football chores for St. Martin ' s College. Although hampered by injuries sus- tained in an airplane accident Frank still showed his usual good brand of ball as he played the title role in Hal Chapman ' s T-formation. Olympia frosh, started his college grid career in a blaze of glory by winning u berth on the AU-Winco team. John was on the receiving end of many a touchdown pass whipped goalward by Frank Sinclair. EARL CARRIER Earl Carrier, scat-back for the Rangers, showed his fleet footed ability by leading the way in Winco league scoring. Earl was voted a spot on the AU-Winco second team. The Rangers started out their football season with a run of bad luck by dropping their first game to Pacific Lutheran. Everett Junior College, next on the Saints schedule, succumbed to the fiery efforts of the Martians. With a victory under their belts the Lacey gridmen treked to Cheney where the mighty Eastern team proved too much for the unexperienced Chapman coached team. A fighting St. Martin ' s team nearly brought on the upset of league play by losing a heart breaker to Central College of Education. Centralia Junior College proved unable to cope with the Ranger might as the Saints chalked up their second win of the season. Whitworth College, of Spo- kane, brought a scrappy team to Olympia and garnered a close win over the local Laceyites. In a final homestretch sprint the Rangers bowled over the Vikings, from Western Washington College of Education, and the champion- ship Bremerton Navy team for a .500 per cent average for the season. 22 DICK TAYLOR ALL-WINCO SECOND TEAM ROY BENEFIEL ROY MADISON Roy Benefiel showed some stellar line play for the Martians throughout the entire season and was accorded due credit by being voted All-Winco honors. Freshmen gridsters. Taylor. Madison. Maguire, and Siebers are shining ex- amples of future strength for Lacey grid teams, having proved their worth to coach Chapman in the past season. FROSH PLAYERS SPARK SEASON JIM MAGUIRE 23 JIM FORD REX COURTNEY Highlights of the season were found in By Tardiffs consistent play at guard as well as his capable leadership. Erwert, Harrison, and O ' Brien gave opponents trouble at every turn and will be back in red and white football togs come next season. Ben Fuchs. Herb Pashkowski, and Bob McCarty. Coach Hal Chapman led his charges to victory in their first practice games with teams from Fort Lewis but found the going rough when the Martians took there annual trip to Ore- gon to play Monmouth, Linfield. and Portland University. The Rangers returned home on the short end of the score but picked up in team play and proceeded to iron out early season kinks. Pacific Lutheran fell heir to defeat of improved traits as the St. Mar.tin ' s team caused the upset of league play in downing the Lutes. This year ' s team has the distinctibn of being the first casaba squad in the Winco League to take to the air. The team flew from Seattle to Spokane to keep their series with Whit- worth College. 25 CHAPMAN CASABA CAVORTERS Left: HOWARD LOZEAU, a four year lettcrman in basketball at St. Martin ' s College, was given honorable mention on the All- Winco team. Lozeau paced the team in scoring throughout the season and made good use of his height under the backboard. Right; BOB McCARTY. four year letterman at SMC. proved to be the long shot artist of the team and dumped in many a point as a regular for the Saints. 26 RANGER RIVALS ROUTED Left; BILL HAUSMANN. frosh player from Everett, received the distinction of being the hustler of the team. Bill re- ceived honorable mtntion on the AU-Winco team and is slated for heavy duty on next year ' s team. Right: ART ALLENSWORTH. tall- est man on the team and veteran player and lettcrman from past Ranger teams. Allensworth used his height to good advantage under the backboards and proved to be one of the mainstays of the team. n Left: HERB PASHKOWSKI. two year letterman. played an out- standing floor game all season and played a steady game as a regular until the latter part of the season when he was ham- pered by illness and was forced to drop out of the linc-un s A I N T S u N D E R T H E B A R D $ W 2 8 PASHKOWSKI GOES UP AFTER THE BALL ACTION AGAINST EASTERN WASHINGTON COLLEGE OF EDUCATION 29 SKI CLUB 30 W4 STAN BURROWES. student director of the Ski Club. j TRIPS TO TIMBERLINE AND RA NfER HIGHLIGHT SEASON TIM SWEENEY and HOWARD WHITE at Rainier.
