The St. Ioseph's Academy graduate is expected to he fully developed in every phase of human life: the spiritual, physical, intellectual, moral and social. She is prepared to live a life of service to the family, the state and the Church. With Mary as her model and the example of the hundreds of women who have gone out from the Academy before, she is ready to fulfill Godns plan for her on earth. Barbara llentsen, Lou .-Xnn Blake Boardzhg School Days A typical classroom scene of the boarding school days is depicted by the sophomores who enioyed learning about their predecessors. The styles of the Civil War are evident in the choice of costumes as no particular uniform was required for school days. The student body, about twenty in number, and sisters are assembled to welcome two new Indian girls to the school. They are daughters of Chief Hole-in-the-Day who caused much uneasiness during the Sioux uprisings. The girls enthusiastically told the new arrivals about life at the Academy with its variety of subiects and exciting outings. The thought of oral examinations by the Bishop stirred fearful alarm, but the remembrance of a picnic brought great excitement. The simple ioys of that long-ago day are in great contrast to the overloaded society schedule of tc:day's Ioed. tl 1 Q- X as ,rl W5 Ili .! Only Five subjects have been taught continuously since the in- stitution of the school. The first of these is religion, which is the core of our entire education. To English and French, two of the original courses, have been added Latin and Spanish. Sewing also remains on the program, the more practical dress- making taking the place of tapestry making and ornamental needlework while the music department has given up the melodeon and the guitar. Other early subjects, such as etymology and epistolary correspondence, have been replaced by social problems and mathematics. Instead of astronomy and hotany, the sciences of physics and chemistry are now taught. Room 21201952 Gmc 2-L .Wm-sn.,.,,. Eucharzklzb Day 1941 Eucharistic Day I94I describes the activities of the Academy in preparation for the National Eucharistic Congress which took place in St. Paul that year. Academy girls in formal dresses and veils formed a guard of honor. The rest of the student body wore their uniforms and white tams. The girls sang Eucharistic hymns as they walked in procession to the front yard Where Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament was held. H051 Hour Religion is the most important part of an Academy girls life. On First Fridays a large number of students attend Mass in the Holy Family Chapel and throughout the day the girls take their turn at the prie-dieus adoring the Blessed Sacrament. All religion classes visit the chapel during their regular religion class periods, and Holy Hour is conducted for the Sen- iors by Father Ioseph Kuncl, senior religion instructor. Each of the other year groups have a Holy Hour in the chapel once a month. j Ceftflefznzal A1055 On November 9 the Most Reverend Iohn Gregory Murray. Archbishop of St. Paul. cele- brated a Pontirical Mass and preached a ser- mon commemorating the establishment of the Academy IOO years ago. The Archbishop was assisted at Mass by Very Reverend Hilary Hacker, Very Reverend George Ryan. Very Reverend Roger Connole, Very Reverend Cer- ald O'Keefe, Reverend Iohn Sankovitz and Reverend Iohn Sweeney. Pastors of rhe S7 parishes from which Acad- emy students come were invited to the Mass as guests. The student body sang the Ordinary of the Mass and the Glee Club chanted the Cre- gorian Proper, Terribilis Fst Locus Istef' The ceremony was concluded with the singing of the Te Deumf' the traditional hymn of thanksgiving sung at solemn liturgical func- tions. Because of the Centennial celebration the an- nual three-day retreat which was conducted by Father Frederick I. Barthelme of Nassau. Min- nesota was held March 17-19. For this reason many activities are open to the students. Special skills and interests are developed through the Glee Club, Dramatics Club, PATRINS and the IOURNAL. To maintain a strong body as well as a strong mind, students may partake in extramural and intramural sports, bowl- ing, swimming and horseback riding. The opportunity to associate with others is given through such affairs as the lunior-Senior Prom, the Mother-Daughter Tea and the underclassman parties. Friendships made during school days may be renewed at the SIA Alumnae gatherings.
