X av I I 4' Y OPQLUOI' We are happy to commemorate with this 1954 Pendulum the fiftieth anniversary of powered flight, bearing always in mind that we are be- ginning with this decade a new golden age of aviation. Since the Wright Brothers launched the Kitty Hawk on a wintry day fifty years past, America and aviation and progress have been synonymous. In pausing to review these years of aviation history, we find our classmates, our sports, and our activities coinciding with the fledg- ling occurrences in the development of powered flight. On guard to guide all Catholic American students, Wright brothers of the future, is Our Lady, with all the graces and inspirations of her Marian year. Our Lady of the Apocalypse, of the Sun and Moon and the Stars, guide us.

Lilienthal, toyed with it awhile over the Indiana dunes, then handed it on to the brothers . . . the bicycle men of Dayton. Five centuries after Milan, the brothers flew over Kitty Hawk - - - Leaning on the winds of Hatteras until they had need of them no more Disdaining either winds or lack of them, Lying prone between man-made wings, a roaring motor at theirf backs, Performing man's greatest feat in a high collar, with shirtsleeves neatly down and buttoned.
