The steeds of the Vallryries. 1' he same dream that engrossed Archimedes and Da Vinci, the genius of Milan The same urge to fly like the birds that quickened the pulses of Henson and Stringfellow and Cayley of Britain, Of Ader of France and Lilienthal of Germany, who followed the dream to death, Of gentle Chanute, who took the dream from. Five centuries after Milan, the brothers flew over Kitty Hawk - - - Leaning on the winds of Hatteras until they had need of them no more Disdaining either winds or lack of them, Lying prone between man-made wings, a roaring motor at theirf backs, Performing man's greatest feat in a high collar, with shirtsleeves neatly down and buttoned. X av I I 4' Y OPQLUOI' We are happy to commemorate with this 1954 Pendulum the fiftieth anniversary of powered flight, bearing always in mind that we are be- ginning with this decade a new golden age of aviation. Since the Wright Brothers launched the Kitty Hawk on a wintry day fifty years past, America and aviation and progress have been synonymous. In pausing to review these years of aviation history, we find our classmates, our sports, and our activities coinciding with the fledg- ling occurrences in the development of powered flight. On guard to guide all Catholic American students, Wright brothers of the future, is Our Lady, with all the graces and inspirations of her Marian year. Our Lady of the Apocalypse, of the Sun and Moon and the Stars, guide us. Cost pew Crea A- .jcdlli padfor My dear Seniors, v Graduation places you at another milestone in your life. Reaching this milestone calls for congratulations on n work well done. It also issues a challenge. Your diploma from a Catholic school indicates that you have sufficiently mastered not only the required academic subjects but also the Christian way of life. And in this lies its challenge. Your mission is to go out into the world and carry the light and influence of jesus Christ into the walks of everyday living and make them felt wherever you are and in whatever you are doing. May the remembrance of the happy years spent in St. Joseph's School be evei: dear to you. May you realize ever more and more that the beauty oi these years is in consequence of the kind of life you learned and lived here. That you may continue in this life is our fond hope and it shall be the object of our con- tinued prayers for, you. Farewell, now, and God bless you. Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Kraus Rev. Frederick A. Mertens, who died September 24, 1953. Always dear to us in life, he was associated with the better part of our scholas- tic career at St. Joseph. Through the many years he served us so well, there was but one purpose in his life: to love God and to teach others to love Him also. When the great tragedy of the total destruction of our parish church occurred four years ago, it was Father Mertens who or- ganized the parishioners and built the beautiful edifice that stands upon Mt. Oliver hills, a lasting tribute to his tremendous love for his God and his people. He gave his life that we and others of the parish might have a full spiritual life. May his soul rest in peace. Exploring in unison the mysteries of the chemical world and the mechanical perplexi- ties of the typewriter, they managed to find time to participate vigorously in all school activities. Already speaking Spanish with accents all their own and taking shorthand with the aplomb of experienced stenographers, they pooled their efforts to become a harmonious unit in whatever they undertook. Blending perfectly in- to the roles of upperclassmen, they were the backbone of the operetta, sharing leads and sup- porting roles in a coalition of talent and hard work. Under the guidance of enthusiastic officers, they helped plan the prom and worked ardently to make it as wonderful as possible. Tenth grade has made them a recognized part of the upper classmen, and their school attitude has changed correspondingly. Study period proctors report these groups as having extremely industrious study periods. Sophomores turn out some of the best scholas- tic work done in our high school. Their schedule is not too heavy, and the extra time on their SDOIQAOITEOVQ CIM, hands was used to advantage, especially in bio- logy and English projects. In debate work, three of their number made the Av team. In fact, the whole group of soph- omores have gained a name for a tendency to argue and to prove their point. But enthusiastically they joined in all school activities and developed a promis- ing school attitude. Among this group, their scholastic status is still their main objective, therefore their daily class work was their chief concern. The weekly world history quiz was an anxious moment for practically every freshman. They proudly turned our original newspapers from new countries stud- ied and painstakingly mapped these new lands with artistic or inartistic touch. This year St. Joseph's, under Coach Carl Rosa's training, fielded one of the most energetic though least experienced teams in many a season. The hardest blow to the team came with graduation in 1953, which took seven of last year's players. Only returning regular was sophomore Bob Zeke Zov- ko. Zeke's favorite shot is a one hand push from any angle on the court. High scorer was senior Captain Bob Weaver, who saw a good deal of action last year. Bob is a good set shot and also likes to drive in on the opposition. The team's center was junior Tom Pachavis, a good hook shot and rebound man. Rounding out the first five were junior Ron Seaman, very effective on a jump shot from around the foul circle, and senior Ron Grebner, a team player who will just as soon pass the ball to a teammate as take the shot himself. Despite their lack of experience, the Flying Dutchmen came through on top in some of their most challenging league games. Going up high for a shot is Cap- tain Bob Weaver.
