To us he left in action this solid bit of logic: Since the Holy Bible is the word of God, it is the way to reach God. The Gospel is a way of lifeg it is eminently practical. A great Pope, Pius X one said that the more we read the Gospel the stronger becomes our faith. Putting together the two thoughts of Pius X and John Gutenberg, we young men and women facing the world in this graduating class of 1953 have a sure, safe, and simple rule of life. Five hundred years is as a moment in the sight of God. But the five hundred years since Gutenberg tried to show how necessary is the word of God have proved that man does poorly when he loses sight of the truth of the Scriptures. Many people ahead of us have forgotten Godg they stand alone in the midst of millions of people. Will we be without God in twenty years, one asks oneself. Never-as long as you hear and read His word and keep it. IJIUBIUS Seniors ...... Underclasses . . . Sports ...... Activities ...... A few days later the bells of St. joseph began to ring regularly to remind the people that the work of God goes on . . . that her priests are there to offer the Mass, to consecrate, and to absolve in the name of the Lord. Many significant changes were made in our school life because of the church fire. Our gym became a temporary church, and school and church became a single unit. Schedules were revised, new rooms and subjects called into service. The completion of the new St, Joseph Church in May, 1953, marks a crowning achievement for our pastor, his assistants, Father Walter J. Schaming and Father Herbert J. Cost, and the hardfworking parishioners of St. Joseph Parish. An example of the many hours spent on silent prayer during a retreat. 44 Annual Retreat Traditionally at St, .loseph's High there is a retreat sometime hefore spring. This year witnessed the support of that custom, Father Paul Farkas, OFM, Cap., from St. Augustines Monastery visited us on March lo, 17, and 18 to give us counsel and refincarnate our hope for salvation. As usual the Reverend Father was received with genuine appreciation. This was an aeceptahle time for a retreat, since school life hegins to get a hit slow around March. The retreat added a ncw perspective on some things spiritual and gave one something more to live for. Whtrri students can give three days to serious thinking and like it there is hope for Catholic youth, Retreat Master Father Paul Farkas, O.F.M.Cap. Officers of the Third Order are: Prefect. Eileen CIQHCYZ Vice President, Robert Detig: Secretary. Pitricia Dei. and Treasurer, james Klein. Assistant Director Father Paul Farkas, O.F.M.Czip. Third Order The Third Order of Saint Francis is not just a plain, ordinary club, society, or organizationg but a true religious order. Its membership in our school is about 80g it is one of the largest junior groups of the Third Order in Pittsburgh. The main purpose of the Third Order, as with any other religious order, is to aid us in attaining our goal, eternal happines in heaven. To fulfill its main purpose the Third Order conducts monthly meetings. Ar these meetings Father Paul Farkas, O.F.M. Cap., leader of the junior Third Order groups in Pittsburgh, gives an instructive address to the members, The Third Order also carries on charitable activities, such as the collecting of canceled stamps for the benefit of missionaries. Our Third Order supplements the religious from the religion class. Through the Third Order its members become better acquainted with our religion and learn how to put it into practice. Members are also kept in touch with the true medieval spirit of christian charity. The Third Order is comprised of about 80 members. This group is one of the largest of the Iunior Third Order groups in the city of Pittsburgh. Writer and typisls of The Pendulum. The Forensic League is quite distinct from other organizations here: it has unofiicial title of being the most active group in our school. Although it is only in its fourth year in our school, its membership is well over thirty, which is quite large for a school our size. Its mem- bers are Seniors, juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen who take active part in such diver' sified speaking roles as original and studied oratory, humor, dramatic extemporaneous speaking, and public debating. Twice a year the Catholic Forensic League of the Diocese of Pittsburgh holds a Student Congress, This congress consists of representa' tive groups of league members from every school. At the congress parlimentary procedure is studied and practiced. C27 Speakers who have reached 300 points in Speech and Debate: Eileen Cagney, Patricia Dei, Ruth Ann Mutsch- ler, and Robert Detig, Promising Freshmen speakers are Elaine Mielcarek, Wil' liam Bauer, Betty Mae Mutschler, and Lorraine Bach. The debate teams of our school visit other schools twice a month for debate tournaments. Here they debate on current problems of international organization. Like the debators, the speakers attend speech tournaments twice a month, where they deliver their speeches in different classes. Outstanding members of the Forensic League are Seniors: Eileen Cagney, LaVerne Lowe, Ruth Ann Mutschler, Robert Detig, and junior Patricia Dei, who have reached the Degree of Excellence in forensic work. Each has obtained well over the limit of ZOO points, Special recognition should again be given to LaVerne Lowe who traveled to New York City in May of 1952 to compete in a national Speech tournament. 49 rx xovh HW' S E x - ymfd MWA of Me Wnk Junior Mcinhcrs of the History Honor Sucicty are Patricia Dei, Iacquclyn Prcisingcr. and Mziry Lou Ott. mor iiwiiilwrs of HHS arc Robcrt Dctig and Ruth Ann Nilltsfhlcr.
