IIHIIIIHIIIIII Sister eannes Message gto the Graduates . . 'lt is a very great pleasure for me to congratulate the members of the class of l948. You are standing at the end of the twelve year journey, and you gaze out into the great world that lies beyond high school days and wonder what is in store for you in that mysterious future. You cannot draw aside the curtain today and see the life you will live tomorrow, and it is exceedingly fortunate that you cannot, tor that would rob your lite of most of its novelty and charm. It is the uncertainty of life that makes our days interesting and gives a charm to the commonplace things in which most of us are en- gaged. So while we have a longing to get a glimpse at the world be- yond we should be satisfied to have it untold as we proceed on the highway ot lite, ' You have been taught respect and social responsibility. You have learned the honor and humility of honest toil-of a task well' done. You have learned reverence toward and sincerity in the works and teachings at Almighty God. ' You are equipped to take up your station in lifeggyou are equipped to go forward and make your station in lifeg you are equipped to go torwardand make your contribution to society and the world. First and foremost, we shall recall our zealous teachers who have given so much of their time in teaching valuable lessons never to be forgotten, We find it difficult to express our sentiments of gratitude and appreciation to our devoted principal and the faculty, our true friends and bene- factors. We shall always remember them for their many acts of kind- ness, wise guidance, and religious instructions so generously rendered and bestowed upon us throughout our four years in high school. ST. Portraits O Uwe 'Dutch Menl' John Zovko - Potent point-getter for the Dutchmen this campaign, Johnny has definitely been the mainstay of our Section I Champs His accurate push-shooting from all angles of the court was a main factor in the team's winning ways. The '47-'48 season for John brought him two new records at St. Joe's. He established the all-time high for points in a season with 405 mar- kers, and his l6.2 average per game sets another record. Tom Reinhardt-Teamed with l.aPlace at the forward positions, Hardt proved his versatiliy on the hardwood by means of his clever ball-handl- ing, set shots, and one'-handed flings. The second St. James encounter for the City playoffs was high-lighted by Tommy's stellar performance. Don Lauterbach-Playing his final year of var- sity competition Don's defensive play was out- standing. Limiting the opponent's scoring threat to a very low total was usually Don's task and, in- deed, his task was well performed. l Buck's con- tent to feed rather than shoot, all added up to the makings of a real team player. Tom LaPlace-Operating for the familiar Ja- cob-Zone defense, our talented Tal, made up the other half of the f'Tommy-Gun Twin attack, featuring our flashy forwards. His right-handed heaves saved many a game for the Flying Dutch- men, for it was this same shot thatmeant disas- ter for St. Veronica. Paul Schake- Shabby capably held down the first-string center assignment. Proof of his 20-20 vision can be had through theexistence of his re- markable foul-shooting record. Control of the backbcards was ably handled by Paul and a fine exhibition of his pivot-shooting was displayed at the last St. Basil game. Raymond Borowitz- The sixth man is necessary to any winning quintet, says Doc Carlson, emi- nent Pitt mentor. Ray proved this statement many times this season. He subbed as both forward and center with equal success this campaign. Paul Behers-Although handicapped with a Se- rious illness at the start of the season, Paul re- taliated and displayed his fighting spirit with equal vigor on the hardwoods. John Novosel- Dependability, his middle name, Jack has proved himself as a steady performer. Chicken's six-foot frame, coupled with his ag- gressiveness under the backboard, led the second squad inthe clinches. Donald Zandier-The only Junior member of the Senior squad, Don's push-shots were a familiar feature in many games this past season. He also played ball for the Jayvees. Arthur Herrlich-A favorite with the sophs, Art filled many a gap in the games. His speed and fine ball-handling hold hopes for a champion five in future years. . V Matt Holzer-Another sophomore with great promises. He possesses an uncanny ability in the making of left-handed hook shots from all angles of the floor.
