H8136 'Drum e William Glaid Robert Waigand William Glaid Erhimtiun William Glaid, better known as Bill to the boys and Billie to the Glaids, passed away suddenly on November 7, 1945 after a short illness. A server for eight years, student manager of the team, bell ringer in the school, Bill was never known to shirk his responsibilities. He had a per- fect attendance record for twelve years. The present Graduating Class of 1946 was proud of Bill in every way. He ranked among the leaders of the class scholastieally and was a faithful friend to all. It is to William Glaid that we proudly dedieate our l946 Annual. His memory will live forever in our hearts. May he rest in peace! Billie and Bob as taken on their First Holy Communion Day. These boys were friends from childhood until the angel of death snatched Billie away. Friendship, however, is eternal. May theirs continue in the great beyond. Rcv. Fathvr I . Klein Mr. Wim. Sommers Mr. Matt Gouze Mr. Nick Parillo MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL AND FACULTY Having persevered through twelve years of moral, physical and mental train- ing in the vast fields of education is a noted accomplishment in the life of any boy or girl. Graduation, the culmination of this long drawn-out process, is surely a time of real happiness and rejoicing. Perhaps when it is all over, you, dear gradu- ate, may ask yourselffwhat should I recall most from these recruiting years, that I can carry into my life that will bring for me the greatest peace and happiness? We would answer you in the words of St. Paula- Whether you eat or drink, or whatsoever else you do, do all to the honor and glory of Godf' Your daily good intention is what makes you fulfill the object of your creation'--fto give Him the greatest possible honor and glory. Secondly, this end will only be achieved by a lively faith in the Creator for Whose glorifieation you were put on this planet of ours. Faith in Him, in man- kind, in yourself, in all that is good, and noble and true, will elevate the humdrum of a sometimes monotonous existence and raise it to a supernatural plain so that the bitter things of life may he made sweet, the rough ways plain, the crooked paths, straight. Seniors, let your daily prayer be---- Lord, increase my faith. Theory in Practice MECHANICAL DRAWING Behind these drawing boards and T-squares sit our mechanical drawing students, They are our engineers and architects of tomorrow. VVhen this subject was offered to them in September they were eager to accept it. They took a great interest in their work, and have become quite skillful in the art of drawing, printing. and lettering. PHYSICS Here, the Senior boys are just unlocking a few of the secrets that nature withholds from those not taking the subject of physics. Even to some of the Seniors in the class they will always be mysteries. At the lab periods which occured weekly, the Seniors can be observed, each group at a clifferent experiment, trying to prove practically Olmfs Law, Archimede's Principle, the Law of Inverse Squares. the Theory of Illumination, Specific Heat, etc. To the scientists and physicists of the future, this work was extremely interesting. But to 76 shy Freshmen who walked through the corridors of St. Josephis for the first time it was the beginning of something new and exciting. When our schedule was first put before us, we now admit that it wasn't a feeling of confidence that swelled within us. Latin and Algebra stood before us like two huge, impassable mountains, but we later learned anything can be conquered with honest effort. On November 8 the Seniors presented the initiation social. Although it seemed strange to us at first, the gala affair which consisted of initiation, a light lunch and dancing soon made us feel an important part of St. joseph's. December 15 marked the opening of Christmas vacation and January brought the re- sumption of classes and mid-semester exams. Two Freshie boys William Vernau and Robert Kircher were chosen to join the line of four senior cheerleaders and did a swell job. The date for our first social was May 6 and every Freshie eagerly worked to make it a SUCCESS. , I The Flying Dutchmen captured the title of State Champions and we were proud not only of the team but also of our Freshman, Carl Rosa, who made the varsity. june rolled around and we met and conquered our exams. We couldn't help but feel a sense of achievement as we left for vacation knowing that with September would come a SOPHOMORES Upon returning to school we sang in our hearts as we discovered that we were another step higher on the ladder of our high school career. We felt like experienced veterans as we observed the new Freshies. Within no time at all we were in the regular stride of our school work and were ready for a year that offered Latin II, German I, Geometry, World History, English II, Music and Religion II. Watching the Freshies being initiated at the Senior social gave us a feeling of satisfaction. Another vivid memory was the basketball game in which the Sophomore girls defeated the Freshies. Basketball season seeded like an oasis in the desertf' as it offered diversion from our solid schedule. History repeated itself and again The Flying Dutchmenn took state laurels. It was also during this season that twenty-one members of the class had an unexpected free day. The 17th of February was the date set for the Soph Social which we like to look back on as the best held at St. Joseph's by the under-classmen. As soon as the weather permitted we tramped to South Park and had an unforgettable weiner roast. Time went fast and before we realized it exams were completed and we walked J UN IORS Upperclassmen at last. This was the year of activities. Much planning and thought had to be given to the Senior Prom which we were to sponsor. This year also saw a change in our curriculum. Commercial subjects came to the front for the girls, the boys all went out for chemistry. Among the successful Junior activities were the skating party and the Sully dance. Second semester found us in the driver seat of the school paper and loving it. May 6, 7, 8, were days of serious thinking, for this was the time set aside for the annual retreat. Father Norbert made this retreat one that we will ever remember. May 25 saw us at our Sunday best enjoying the Junior-Senior prom. We tackled our exams, cleaned our desks, and said so-long to our classmates and were happy in the thought that we were now Seniors. SENIORS When we returned once more to school our class was slightly diminished in size but certainly not in spirit. It was a wonderful feeling that accompanied the first days of our Senior Year but it soon wore off as we got back into our daily routine. The senior boys took a notion to be typistsg the girls, biologists. The second semester found us deeply engrossed in the field of entertainment. The Christmas Cantata being a success, we turned our thoughts to the class play and operetta which were soon to follow. All Seniors looked anxiously forward to the coming prom. This was what we had worked for and looked forward to for three years and now we find it slipping swiftly away. Time waits for no man and as we face the realization that soon we will walk through these familiar corridors for the last time, we are not happy, but we have no regrets, only memories of wonderful times and acquaintanceships. The day of November 7 will long be remembered by all the Seniors as it was on this day God saw fit to take from us William Glaid. He is gone but will never be forgotten in the prayers and hearts of his classmates. change of title. eagerly into summer. Since those possessions are assured us. the students at St. .Ioseph's still believe that the mobilizing force of Americays school children can aid in continuing to preserve a peace procured at so high a price. Eight hustling minute men, treasurers of the various classes under the ahlc dictatorship of Sister M. Owen, have solicited enough funds to procure a hospital unit among other purchases. School-at-war flags can he seen on the doors leading to most of the rooms as a rating ahove 9002 is ehalked up to the credit of the class. During the past year Maury' Louise Senn and Anna SERVICE OFFERED Mae Zimmer have gracious- ly offered their services in supplying the students with ' v - paper, pencils, and many xNIl'l'lNhI'Y other school supplies. Their service was very much ap- preciated hy all. il' h e classes have heen regu- lated through- out the year hy the faithful and punctual timing of Rose Blary Waigand. 'l'hv Che-4-rlrads-rs arv: Norman Brad:-1, Waync- Pvt:-rs, Rohr-rt Litzvl, Allan Quiring, and Edwin Bruvggman. JUNIOR VARSITY Left to Right: First Row-Donald Bauer, Norman larker, Donald Zandier. Second Row-Ralph Bclsterling, Paul Behers, Edgar Lutz, Harry Loveland, john Zovko, Jack Novoscl, Paul Schake, Louis Bott. MEMBERS OF THE JUNIOR VARSITY Under the capable direction of Bill McMahon, former St. Joseph High floor star and recently discharged from the army. the St. Joseph Jay-Vee finished a pleasant basketball campaign. Bill has wielded a Jay-Vee composed of Freshies and Sophs, who displayed fine teamwork and ability on the hard wood floor this season. Our future varsity men and Jay-Vee consist of: Donald fllonj Bauer- -plenty of fighting spirit, that's our I'Don. Norman fNormj Tarker A Short and Sweetl' are just the words to describe Norm's', short stay on the Jay-Vee. Donald fllonniej Zandierf-fAggressiveness and clever ball handling has kept him on the first string. Ralph CTurtlej Belsterling-mShows the making of a good future ball player. Paul fflunnerj Behers -A speedy, Soph guard and a very capable sub. His foul shots proved valuable many times. Edgar fEdj Lutz WA Freshie and worthwhile sub. Handsome Harry Lovelandfffhis six-footer should be an excellent future star. 'Iohn fjohnnyj Zovkow High scoring Freshie playing varsity ball. john C-Iackj Novosel-ffAnother Soph who has made quite a name for himself by being valuable when the team gets in tough spots. Louis flsouiej Bott-'f'l'he left-handed freshmen whose presence on the Jay-Vee aided the team vastly. ll' you happened to see an improvement in the play of the ,lay-Vee, it was probably due to the presence of the varsity-subs, whose appearance on the hard- wood. proved to be a main factor in the Jay-Vee's winning stride this season. The varsity-subs who contributed to the ,lay-Vees' fine basket-play are: So- phomores. Ray flcnnesseej Borowitz. Tom fBrowniej La Place, Ken fflhickenj l.ewis. Vllom Clommyj Reinhardt. MEMBERS OF THE VARSITY OF '11-6 Robert Lauterbaeh Bob's aecuraey and height while playing the pivot, plus his fighting spirit, have meant mueh to the Flying Dutch- menf' Bob surely will be missed in the Coming years, but will not be forgotten. Tom Lewis One of the six-footers, Tom has proved to be a big factor in this years team. His fight- ing spirit showed he has still another big year ahead of him. He will be a big Cog in the wheel of next year's team. Carl Rosa One of the veteran ballplay- ers, Capt Rosa played four years of varsity ball. His classy ball handling and his consistant scoring power have brought many a victory to St. Josephs Like his brother his all-around playing will long live with the Flying Dutch- men. Ray Borowitz Only a sophomore, Ray is growing fast and if given a ehanee, hopes to fill his other brothers shoes in a few years. He is exeeptionally good on his left hand shots. Bob W'iggles', Waigand Bob has played two years of varsity ball. He played a big part on last years team in win- ning the section. During his senior year, he was leading point-getter, due to his famous one-hand shots. Robert 'fWhitey', Horowitz Small but speedy, Bob proved himself to be a real starter. His fighting spirit plus his point-making overshadowed his lack of height. He is sure to be missed next year, both by the team and its followers. Tom Reinhardt The brother of Danny, 'l'om should prove to be very valu- able to Niek jaeobls squad in Coming years. He is a fine defensive man and a good set shot. Tom LaPlaee Although this is his Hrst year on the varsity, Tommy proved to be very valuable as a sub, and saw a great deal of action. He has a great future ahead in basketball. Kenneth Lewis Ken, brother of 'l'om, is another six-footer and shows some promise to become a good player, Norman Feldmeir Although Norm did not see much action this year, he show- ed however, he is one to be watched. A six-footer he spec- ializes in the pivot-shot. He is sure to be a starter next year. Stanley 'klylonkn Czaikowski Center of our team, Monk is known for his play under the hoop mainly on his tip-in shots. Donald Lauterbach Only a sophomore, Don started quite a few games this season and should prove to be very useful to Nick Jacobs in years to come.
