Text from Pages 1 - 70 of the 1945 volume:

i f Q X2 U9 45 XW my 6, Nothing Without His Divine Guidance iv N, ,, Cru ading GOD, who at sundry times and in divers manners, spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, last of all, In these days hath spoken to us by his Son, Whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the World. Who being the brightness of his glory, and the figure of his substance, and uphold- ing all things by the word of his power, making purgation of sins, sitteth on the right hand of the majesty on high. The grace of God our Saviour hath ap- peared to all men, in instructing us, that denying ungodliness and worldly desires, We should live soberly and justly and godly in thy world looking for the blessed hope and coming of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: Who gave Him- self for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and might cleanse to Himself a people acceptable, a pursuer of good works, These things speak and exort in jesus Christ Our Lord. St. Paul, I, 1-2 for Chris NOT we, as the early Christian, are imbued with the spirit of Christ, Radiating simplicity and love, spreading among men the gospel of Christ. But we, the modern man, stumbling along in a world of false principles are led by modern leaders, who have outlined world orders, That are based on the principles of Christ, but dis- carded as impractical when confronted with actual ap- plication. Men that are motivated by the human rather than by the divine necessities of man. A world fighting for peace, Seeking happiness and omitting what is fundamental and necessary. But in the darkness, We have the sun and our artifact light to guide our steps and help our eyes. We have the Faith we believe in to steer ourselves away from everything antagonistic to its letter and spirit. But we can only transform the social order of the modern world. By affecting at the same time and first of all Within our own soul a renewal of moral and spir- itual life. And what does this demand? The courage, sacrifice, responsibility, prayer, ideals of chastity, reverence and obedience, Christ has given to the World. And yet, the problem is not so difficult as it was twenty centuries ago. At that time Christ had to be given to the world. Today we have only to restore Him. CCB UT Christ as the Son in his own house: Which house are we, If we hold fast the confidence and glory of hope unto the end. Wherefore, as the Holy Ghost said, Today if you shall hear his voice harden not your hearts. qst. Paul, 1, 6-81 T HEN go forth with courage, spreading the doctrine of Christ, Exemplifying in your own lives The courage, the love, the peace, Of Christ your Leader. As you go out to start your life as young men and women, let me give you two principles to guide you on your way. It is more important to please God than men, it is more important to he right with God than to he successful in life. Kindness is the key to happiness. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Make others happy and you'll have happiness. May God's blessing he with you through your life. Reverend Frederick A. llertens Reverend Alexander Schutty GBM lgrirniz ln the Catholic Church there exists :in order of priests, to whom hlesiis Christ, the external High-l'riest has committed the ex- alted power to cunsecrate and to filler up the Divine Sacrifice, to dispense the lloly Sacra- ments, and to preserve and preach His heav- enly doctrines. THE FIGHTING, SPIRITED, FLYING DUTCHMEN A varsity squad composed of five experienced ballplayers of which three were seniors, the Flying Dutchmen looked forward to 19114-'45 with hopes of a winning season. Starting off in the exhibition column a speedy St. Joseph quintet took an excellent ll victory margin against only 3 defeats. The wins included double victories over St. Michael's, St. lVIary's, St. Thomas', St. lVendelin,s. single victories over St. Casimirls, and North Catholic. The three losses were a double setback by Central Catholic and a single victory by North Catholic, both 'LClass Au teams. In the Catholic Hi League the Dutchmen hopped off to a good start by beating the Mounties of St. Justin's 30-24. A hard fought contest all the way with the victors making the best of it at the foul line. This was the deciding factor of the game. Next for St. .Ioseplfs was the towering boys of St. Veronica. Lack of height for Alma Mater kept the game on close range, but the f'lJutchmen', steadily increased their small lead and finally nosed the invaders out by a 28-21 score. St. Luke's and St. Basil's were next to fall under the stinging blows of the Mt. Oliverites running their victories to four straight with the scores 443-22 and 39-30 respectively. A more determined and fighting St. Veronica team bounced back to give the HFlying Dutchmenn their first Section I defeat on the Crusaders' court 32-30. St. Iosephls crashed back into the victory column by crushing St. Luke's 43-22. A thriller game at the expense of St. Basills gave the f'l'lutchmen,' their sixth league victory and also league leadership. St. Joseph led all the way with St. Basilas close on their heels, with no more than 3 points difference at any time. St. James was the next foe to feel the booming guns of St. kIoseph's taking a 49-38 defeat. The green and white clad boys of St. Justinls were also defeated by the red and blue, but not until they had given the league leaders the scare of the season. Only a shrewd passing combination of the five l'Dutchmen enabled a clean victory over the Fighting Irish . Wfith the Section l Championship sewed up a fighting Flying Dutchmenn second team bowed to a rugged St. James squad 47-29. The City Championship games found the Flying Dutchmenn losing the first encounter to the rangy St. Casimir boys ell-34 on the hit. Oliver court. Out- played, but not out-fought by the Casimirites, the Dutchmen', lost heart in the final minutes by the pitching of their opponents. A hot night kept the Section H leaders out in front for the four quarters. Kovach paced both teams with l2 points. The second game of the series proved to be different. however. as the 'fFlying Dutchmenu tool-' to a decisive -ll-33 victory. Taking on an early 8 point lead the 'fDutchmen,' were never tied or headed throughout the remainder of the game. Kovach and Reinhardt shared scoring honors with I3 points apiece. I The third and final game which was played on the Duquesne court proved very disastrous to the St. Joseph five. Unable to overcome the opponent's height a gallantly good little St. .loseph team bowed to a good big St. Casimir team 41-29. The Williamsport Tournament In the first tournament game the Flying llutchmens' took a 47-37 victory over Pottsville. The Dutchmen,' scored freely in every quarter with Danny Reinhardt setting the pace with 15 markers. The second tilt saw the f'Flying Dutchmeni' on the long end of the score, defeating St. hlaryis of lVilliamsport. a host team, 57-26. Coach Jacobs used every man in uniform as the quintet tallied time after time to outplay their opponents. By being victorious in the first two encounters the ul'Jutchmen found them- selves in the finals of this thrilling state-wide tourney. ln this final encounter. which now found the 4'Flying llutchmenn pitted against a fast breaking Reading five, the red and blue fell short of being the tournament Champions by a narrow margin of 8 points. This defeat ended the S'Flying Dutchmen's Basketball season. One which was most successful and gave the followers of the i'Flying Dutchmenu memories which will never be forgotten. COACH 'IACOBS Nickls coaching chart since taking over at Mt. Oliver four years ago includes a championship each season in Section I and two successive titles in the Class B State tournament.
