N-2 Activities Seniors tete little sisters The Big and Little Sister party was held on two days this year, September 24 and 25. It was a lot of fun and a good chance to get to know fellow fe- male schoolmates. The party was sponsored by Girls' League and the junior girls. Each senior girl was assigned a sophomore girl to be her little sister. The first the two got together was at noon, eating lunch, then going to the gym for a couple of games. The next day, sixth and seventh periods were reserved for the remainder of the activities. Games were played and refreshments were served. The party was enjoyed by all, including the boys, because no work was required in their afternoon classes. Sophomore, Barbara Duren and senior, Sue McCleary, play on a tricycle in the party games Two teams of sisters battle over who's going which way Ctoph. After two disappointing losses at the outset of the season to Estacada and Canby, the Lions rebounded to whip Silverton and Dallas on successive weeks. The hopes were high at this point, as the Lions were playing good hard-nosed football and were looking forward to playoff possibilities. Astoria proved to be a pivotal game for the Lions as they dropped a 6-0 double overtime to the Fishermen, and the losing ways continued as they were de- feated by McMinnville at the annual Home- coming game and blanked by the Vikings of Forest Grove. With their record at 2-5 and their playoff hopes dashed, the Lions could have folded up at this point but they showed what they were made of and wrapped up the season with two impressive victories, one over tough New- berg, and the other an especially sweet triumph over Estacada in a rematch. In looking back over the season, one can see that with a few good breaks and a couple of lucky bounces, the Lions coiild easily have been a contender for the CVL tit e. If all the girls return next season and finish, replied Coach Fran Stewart, we will have a very good season. Gymnasts for 1974-75, performing on the floor exercise, were Bev Overstreet, Sherry Miller, Ronda Johnson, JoAnne LeMont, Ann Thurman, Thalia Fritz, and Debbie Welch. On the balance beam were JoAnne LeMont, Dawn Kjornes, Annette Alby, Thalia Fritz, Debbie Welch, and Margie Heacock. Then performing on the uneven bars were Ann Thurman, Dawn Kjornes and Liz Rethati. Junior Varsity out did them and ended the season in second place. Their record of ten wins and two losses was out- standing. This is the first time in three years of competition that the girls have wound up in the top three in the league. Their volleyball skill level and competitive- ness increasingly expanded. New techniques, such as a more efficient rotation, were experi- mented with this year in an attempt by Coach Pat Harrison to upgrade the level of competition at St. Helens Senior High. They finished with an 18-4 record. which is one of the best in the school's history. At one time the Lions were ranked 10th in the state poll. Two of the biggest wins of the year came over Astoria at Astoria and Dallas at St. Helens. The Astoria win 670-515 was the first ever for the Lions on the Fishermen's court. It was also the worst defeat that the Fishermen ever suffered on their own home court since the 1950's. The win over the 6th-ranked Dallas Dragons 180-533 was the most exciting game of the year. The Lions played before the largest home crowd, ever, in a display of basketball that will never be forgotten. The Lions dominated every phase of the game and handed the Dragons one of only two losses that they suffered during the season. Enough cannot be said for the hard work and dedication displayed by the players in making this a very successful season. The team has made a tremendous contribution to the interest and success of basketball at St. Helens High School. We lose seven seniors this year who have helped make this such a fine year, Jeff Heller, Rob Fenk, Jeff Edwards, Frank Everhart, Jon Blair, Tracy Grono, and Tony Lasich. Three varsity lettermen who contributed heavily to this year's team will return for the 1975-76 season, Rick Broders, Bill Neveau, and Tim Anderson. Jeff Heller, St. Helens' 6'8 center, was named to second team All-State in t'Oregonian and Oregon Journal polls and was a unanimous lst team All-Coast Division and lst team All-Coast- Valley League choice this year. He has been one of the most outstanding players to ever wear a uniform at St. Helens and he was one of the most respected and feared of the players in the Coast- Valley League for three years. Rob Fenk received 2nd team All Coast Division honors for his outstanding play at guard and scoring at a 14.5 clip. The team awards went to Jeff Heller, Most Valuable, who led the team in scoring 61959, rebounding l14.4J, and blocked 6 shots a game. Jeff Edwards, Best Defensive Player, did an outstanding job on defense and was leading scorer on the team 410-63 and also led the team in assists. Jon Blair, Most Improved, through hard work and determination gave the team that needed support in the guard line. Head Coach Tom Stewart Bill Neveau ltop left? breaks through the Dallas defense. The sophomore squad struggled through the season, sometimes carrying eight players, and for a few games carried only six members on the team. Despite this handicap the Lions did come away with some convincing victories, such as their 46-17 trouncing of Scappoose and their 51-24 stomping of Newberg. i i ? 4 N Page 44 Sophomore Basketball Winter Intramurals, exciting, successfu This yearis winter intramurals consisted of a three-on-three basektball tournament which was sponsored by Boys' League. They formed the word JOY as they harmonized to Joy to the World. Carrie Frappier directed the juniors to Joy to the World and for the competition song they sang, in rounds, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. She was es' corted by George Warneke and Karen Brooks accom- panied on the piano while Ron Schaumberg escorted her. The junior class performance was won by their participation. The seniors sang Deck the Halls as they strolled under a sphere of holly and mistletoe, touching their partners shoulders with boughs of holly, then through wreaths that were lit up with Christmas lights. Ron Brock directed and escorted Lynnette Engstrom who accompanied on the piano. While the senior class president Dennis Baer escorted Karen Strand. Karen played the recorder to God Rest Ye Merry Gentle- ment' while they hummed, as Scott Manges told the meaning of Christmas. The sophomores sang 'tSilver Bells and their uni- que Christmas bells were decorated with silver glitter. To give the bells more effect they used Christmas lights of all colors. Pam Phillips directed and their accompanist was Janice Frost. Betty Walker played the violin and Jennifer Taylor played the string bass during the competition song t'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is one of Shakespear's most popular comedies. The play has the lilt and spirit of youth, and the romantic poetry has the freshness and fragrance of spring flowers. The time of its action is not midsummer, as the title might suggest, but about May Day, and the title merely alludes to the gay madness proverbially associated with the rites of Mid- summer's Eve, or those of May Day, for that matter. The play is a fantasy of folklore and faries, a medley of poetry, song, and dance, with vivid contrasts between the dainty folk in Titania's train and the rude mechanicalsn in Bottom's company. It has some of the qualities of the masque, a favorite form of light entertain- ment at court or at celebrations in the houses of nobility. Edited by L,B. Wright and V. A. The Varsity swimmers swam over one million yards during the season while the Junior Varsity swam considerably fewer. During the three hours of workout a day the J .V. swimmers swam one hour. Marshfield High School Choir and Swing Choir joined with our High School Choir and Swing Choir and Concert Band on our Spring Concert on May 13, and then stayed overnight in the homes of our students. Our re- turn trip to Coos Bay included a joint concert at Marshfield High School on May 20, an overnight stay in their homes, and an assembly program for nearby North Bend High School the following morning. The year also had St. Helens hosting the League Choir Festival, on April 4, for the first time in at least the past 15 years. Participating schools included Newberg, Dallas, Molalla, Astoria, and St. Helens. The climax to our days activities came in a public concert that night which included all of the school choirs. Our guest director for the massed choir was Mr, Wilber Elliott, Choir Director and chairman of the music department at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. Other performances during the year included our yearly trip to Lloyd Center, the Winter Concert, the District Music Festival, Bac- calaureate, and a performance in the com- munity. Music Festival -i Page 65 1 Band enjoys Hawaiian vacation A silver award for musical excellence, leis, sunburns, and pineapples were souvenirs brought home by St. Helens Senior High Concert Band from their trip to Hawaii. After a year of raising funds, planning and seemingly endless rehearsing, the Concert Band took off for Hawaii on April 1, to participate in the 4th Annual Hawaiian Music Festival. The band rehearsed in the Waikiki Shell and per- formed their concert selections there for the judges. Throughout the rest of the bands seven-day stay, they played in various other concerts. These included one at the University of Hawaii, another for the mayor in the city hall and others at various hotels. Not all of the students' time was dedicated to performing. Actually only about 2 hours of the day were taken up for this. The rest of the time the band members could be found doing such things as surfing, fishing, skin diving and touring the island, but mostly they were just stretched out under the sun enjoying themselves. Although various other musical groups performed, there was no direct competition between bands or local groups. The groups, in a sense, competed against themselves, trying to attain a standard of musical excellence. It was this and overall conduct of the group upon which they were judged. The main highlight of the trip was when the band received a silver award during a gala ban- quet for their fine presentations. Band director Tom Brumbaugh and Zan Freeburn, school principal, who also made the trip, said the per- formance of the students brought great credit to our community. gan 'QQ' Steve Moxness taboveb performs on the chimes. The varsity and junior varsity track teams won all of their dual meets with a total of 23 wins. The varsity accumulated 1,298 points to their opponents' 443, and the JV 777 to 324. The Lion cindermen also won all of the relay meets in which they participated. These included the CVL Relays, the Forest Grove Invitational and the Central and Lower Columbia Relays. As sophomores they started out with the usual talk by Mr. Freeburn to get with the system. When Homecoming time arrived they didn't quite make it- achieving last place. By the time of the Carol Contest the class of '76 was ac- celerating fast. A first place going to the sopho- mores hadn't been on the records for 18 years. Their originality and presentation was effective, and the singing, led by Carrie Frappier im- pressed judges and audience alike. This year the juniors started out better with second place in Homecoming, losing by only 12- 1!2 points. They hope to work up to all first places as seniors. As a sophomore Graydon Pihlaja received honors as All-League runner in cross country and Rick Broders was the only sophomore on the varsity squad in basketball. This year many juniors are participating in varsity sports. They are cheered on by one junior cheerleader, Barbara Walker. The Seniors that attend this 7:30 a.m. class, go to school four periods and work the re- maining two, for which they get two credits. This gives the students an opportunity to make money and to concentrate on work instead of a heavy academic schedule. The student's jobs include a range of occupations. Diversified Occupations - Page 155 Classes go co-ed The physical education classes are instructed by Mrs. Fran Stewart, Miss Pat Harrison, Tom Stewart and Mike Jones. This year quite a number of changes were made in this department. For the first time a course on health is no longer considered part of the P.E. program. It is now a required, one semester class starting with this year's sopho- mores. Also this year most of the sports undertaken in class are co-ed. The change provides for a larger variety of activities to choose from, and it has proven to be popular with the students.
