I9 The first football game of the season, with Oregon City. They had us worried for a while, but we made it. Oct. Hope we keep it up. 8-Big Sister Party, sponsored by the Girls' League, where the freshman girls teach the seniors how to dance. lHey, snitch me another doughnutll Oct. IO-The freshmen were dressed gay nineties style for freshman initiation. An assembly was held in which all fresh- men took turns entertaining us. lt wasn't their idea, either. Oct. I8 The St. Helens Chapter of the F.H.A. was hostess to the other chapters in this district for the annual Home Economics Conference. Nov. 5 This year the Hi-Y initiation was held secretly in the evening. You'Il have to ask one of the new members Nov. Nov. Dec. Dec about that. I4 Li'l Abners and Daisy Maes were seen running around the halls. You guessed it. The Sadie Hawkins Day Dance. 2I St. Helens played Jefferson at Multnomah Stadium in the quarter finals of the State Football Tournament. We lost, but it was a good season anyway. 5 Everyone's hair was standing on end. Don't be alarmed though. lt was just the Junior Play, Ghosts at Midnight. I3 Jim Aiken, football coach at the University of Oregon, was guest speaker at the football banquet. Trophies were 'awarded for Lower Columbia and District championships. Dec. Dec I8 A Christmas cantata was given by the grade school choruses, with the freshmen class doing the pantomime. I9 The Girls' League gave its annual Christmas program. The Senior class presented a play, The Messiah. The 'carol contest was won by the sophomore class. Dec. Jan. Jan. Jan. Jan. Jan. Jan. Jan. Jan Feb. Feb. Feb. Feb. I9 The basketball Jamboree was held here again this year. What a crowd! Everyone in the League was here to see it. 9 Letterman's initiation was held in the afternoon. After all that hard work they finally made it! 9 Our first league basketball game of the season was played at Seaside, and we lost. We don't like to talk about that though! IO The Portland Indians invited the St. Helens High School band to play at one of their games at the Portland armory. Really going big time! I4 Students from the University of Oregon held a symposium on the subject of world peace. Really got into some hot arguments. I5 The Forest Grove High School band came here to give us an assembly. Sure was good. I7 The members of the G.A.A. held a Play Day to which the seventh and eighth grade girls from both grade schools were invited. Who said girls aren't athletic? 30 This day was set aside to contribute to the March of Dimes. All classes competed, with the senior class coming out ahead. 3I All the hobos and their girls gathered together for the annual Hi-Y Hobo Convention. 5 Winter band concert was held in the evening. An exceptionally good program was presented. I9 St. Helens placed third in the State Twirling Contest which was sponsored by the Elks. 20 St. Helens played Rainier there. St. Helens won, which means we go to the State Basketball Tournament at Eugene. 28 The Girls' League Council attended the Girls' League conference at Rainier. Had a nice time and got a lot of new ideas. March 4 The St. Helens High School Band made a return trip to Forest Grove to put on on assembly in the high school. March 4 Walter Everman, of the National Assemblies, put on an assembly showing the students the wonders of liquid air. March I6 The State tournament began at Eugene and St. Helens got off to a good start by winning the first two games They won over Pendleton and Tigard. dafsncfam Evenfs March l9 St. Helens lost to Salem on Friday night and played Marshfield for third place on Saturday night. We placed' sixth and received a basketball as a trophy. Two of our boys received honorable mention for their basketball ability when the awards were presented Saturday night. March 24 The senior class presented a 3-act comedy, The Hoosier Schoolmaster. lt's a wonder they knew their parts after the big week at the tournament. April 2 The iunior class came back from spring vacation to give a very successful Junior Prom with the theme Spring Time. Van Armitage's orchestra from Portland provided the music. April 6 The basketball banquet was held as a climax to a very successful basketball season. The guest speaker was Marlowe Brannagan, sports editor of the Journal. April l6 The sophomores took advantage of the year to have a leap year dance. This is your chance, girls, to get those men! April 23 The annual state F.H.A. conference 'was held at Pendleton. Two members of the St. Helens chapter attended. They came back looking forward to a better year in our chapter next year. April 28 The eighth graders caught their first glimpse of high school life when they came up for Eighth Grade Day. May 5 The band and choruses gave the Spring Concert. lt was enjoyed by everyone who attended. May 7 The Girls' League's biggest event of the year was the Mother's Day Tea. The girls gave a program and style show, and refreshments were served to the girls and their mothers. May B Baccalaureate was held Sunday evening. Didn't feel quite right under that cap and gown.
