Max Burnell, B.S. Notre Dame Universify Physical Education Coach: Varsity Football, Athletic Director Chairman: Physical Educofion Depart- ment. PHYSICAL EDUCATION The physical education department is directed by Mr. Max Burnell. In instructing the freshmen and sophomores the rules and techniques ot different sports, physical education classes devoted time to a wide variety of activities. Softball, track, tumbling, volleyball, swimming, and, of course, calisthenics were all part of the program. We try to go along with President Kennedy ' s emphasis on physical fitness, says Mr. Burnell. With people riding around in cars so much today, they do not exercise as much as they did before so we try to supplement this deficiency by our program. Running and swimming do this the best, he feels, as one builds up the legs and other muscles. 27 Thomas Powers, B.S. Besides the paperbound textbooks, the English department loaned supplemental paperbound books to classes at a considerable reduction in cost. A series of new records allowed students to hear professional actors read the litera- ture they were studying in class. SRA Reading Labs helped increase reading comprehension and speed for the slow as well as the bright. Speakers and a trip to Bye, Bye, Birdie helped the students appreciate the language arts. Such is the English department as directed by Brother David.
