iixmmii i inm: !. !!SSW • ?? . The science department has always been active at Saint George ' s, and this year, with Brother Richard as chairman, was no exception. An experimental biology course sponsored by the govern- ment uses the lab more than fifty per cent of the class time and emphasizes genetics and metabolism. Chemistry students took a field trip to the Searle Laboratory and heard from a representative of the Atomic Energy Commission. Physics students have been experimenting with some new equipment. Prospective scientists furthered their education by field trips and talks sponsored by the Science Club. And this year as in die past, Saint George students displayed their hard work at the science fairs with some projects carrying off high honors. SCIENCE Brother K. Richard, B.A., MA. SOCIAL STUDIES With Brother Clarence as chairman, the social studies department emphasized critical thinking. Besides utilizi ng their texts, students were taught to do specialized readings to deepen their knowledge. Using paperbound books, records, films, film- strips, maps, and an occasional speaker, the social studies teachers tried to get the students to visualize past civilizations and present-day political and social developments. College-level American history was taught to advanced students. Visitors at the Open House saw some interesting projects constructed by the social studies classes. Brother Clarence believes that with our problems at home and foreign affairs exploding, it is necessary for our students, as teenage citizens, to keep abreastwith current events. Brother J.
