I ♦ ♦ ♦ i 4 Iw Dedication In accordance with this year ' s theme, THE WHOLE MAN, the 1962 GEORGIAN wishes to honor a man who has achieved outstanding success in, building the character of Saint George students--Max Burnell. Having an outstanding athletic career himself at Duluth Cathedral High School in Minnesota and Notre Dame University, Mr. Burnell is well qualified by his training-- both intellectually and physically-to be the Athletic Director of Saint George High School. His personal quahties-dynamic leadership, attractive personality, dogged persistence, and a friendly cheerfulness-enables him to effectively work with students and obtain the results he has in view. Saint George teams under Coach Burnell have won many national, state and city championships. Trophies have been added to our case so often that the Saint George Dragons have traditionally become synonymous around the Chicago area with first-rank football teams. 1961 was no exception. Champions of the new Chicagoland Prep League and ranked number five in Illinois, the Dragons posted their first undefeated season in their history. Mr. Burnell, however, is not just a coach of winning football teams. It that is all he was, this issue of the GEORGIAN would not be dedicated to him. Much more than this, Mr. Burnell has excelled in his ability to develop boys into men. By his insistence on high standards of sportsman- ship, by requiring manliness, by demanding service, generosity, and teamwork, by stimulating his players with aggressiveness and drive, by encouraging excellence in studies, and by pressing for exact obedience to training rules and his commands, he has in every way developed the students of Saint George into whole men. This, the GEORGIAN feels, is Mr. Burnell ' s greatest service to Saint George High School. -lar the Administration With the change of teachers at the beginning of this year, Brother Maurice was appointed to the position of Brother Director and principal of the school. Through him and the other brothers in the Adminstration, even now Saint George is becoming a newer and better school. Brother has brought back ' into the minds of others the value of an education at Saint George through the Open House held for the present eighth graders and future freshmen. Brother L. Maurice ssr Brother Jerome Anthony Being Assistant Principal and in charge of building main- tenance gave Brother Jerome the twofold job ot keeping Saint George up to par with the other schools of this city. Academically, he made sure that those who went to our school fulfilled their duty to their parents to study and get passing grades. At the same time he made sure that the students in our school had the greatest opportunity to do their work well by keeping the school building in condition. Brother Daniel is Saint George ' s fine registrar. In this capacity he handled transcripts, insurance, and files. Brother also taught junior religion and was active in vocation guidance. Brother Raphael is head of the newly improved guidance department. Brother ' s many services-- Mass participation, school publicity, bulletin boards, and group guidance-are well known to the students. Brother Jordan David is the capable Dean of Men. In his spare time he directed die Glee Club and handled the Greater Saint George Committee. Brothers Daniel, Raphael, and Jordan David ' ' Perfect schools are the result of good teachers. who are thoroughly prepared and well -grounded In the matter they have to teach, who possess the intellectual and moral qualifications required by their important office. ' ' Mu.immeiK- ' .Trrr- ' ifr?-.  T i t? ««,, • «i  • « ' T ! ! I A, 1 Fifty per cent ot the student body was active last year in either classical or modern languages. This tact is indicative of Saint George ' s rapidly progressing language department headed by Brother Emilian. Indeed, the department seemed to have gone modern, and more is yet to come. Through the use ol sing-alongs, tapes, records, and speakers, one can see the presence ot new techniques. Most characteristic of all was the use of conversation. The language student at Saint George has to be on his toes because sooner or later, he knows that he is going tohaveto speak and listen in that language. About the future. Brother Emihan said, We hope to have a language lab soon, and we hope to give each student a greater variety of language courses. • - ' LANGUAGES Brother Jerome Emilian, B.A., M.A. SaintMary ' s College Religion II, English I, English III Speech and Debate Chairman: Language Department Brother Justin, B.A. St. Mary ' s College Religion III, Latin 11,111 Intramurais, Coach: Freshman Basketball, AthleticStori Mr. John Reinhordt College of St. Thomas Latin I, English III Bowling Brother Henry Benedict, B.A. St. Mary ' s College Religion [, Latin I; II Coach: Freshman Football, Guidance Bus Driver, Vocation Henry Grove, B.M., Ph.B., M.A. DePaul University, Chicago Music College, Loyola University, University of Chicago German I, II, III, English III ki! . i m II ii I h --- n MATHEMATICS Brother H. Advanced math analysis was taught to college-bound seniors, and training in the use of the slide rule was part of several courses. Many pamphlets, enrichment books, and new tools have been utilized by the teachers as aids. Freshmen and sophomore classes have written themes and have constructed geometric designs as well as delved into the theory of math. Next year, says Brother Columban, SaintGeorge will introduce a new revised mathematics course into the freshman program with hopes that in a short time, it will be offered to the whole student body. ' - i The commerce department under Mr. Amidei ' sguidancehas made considerable progress each year. With the commerce students reporting that their courses have been more than challenging, this past year was no exception. Government aids and pamphlets were used; the economics classes practiced on income tax forms, the bookkeeping classes profited by banking accounting systems. Financial experts were heard by the students, and as usual, many -an amateur bookkeeper sweated over a hidden error in his project. The science department has always been active at Saint George ' s, and this year, with Brother Richard as chairman, was no exception. An experimental biology course sponsored by the govern- ment uses the lab more than fifty per cent of the class time and emphasizes genetics and metabolism. Chemistry students took a field trip to the Searle Laboratory and heard from a representative of the Atomic Energy Commission. Physics students have been experimenting with some new equipment. Prospective scientists furthered their education by field trips and talks sponsored by the Science Club. And this year as in die past, Saint George students displayed their hard work at the science fairs with some projects carrying off high honors. SCIENCE Brother K. Richard, B.A., MA. Besides utilizi ng their texts, students were taught to do specialized readings to deepen their knowledge. Using paperbound books, records, films, film- strips, maps, and an occasional speaker, the social studies teachers tried to get the students to visualize past civilizations and present-day political and social developments. College-level American history was taught to advanced students. Visitors at the Open House saw some interesting projects constructed by the social studies classes. Brother Clarence believes that with our problems at home and foreign affairs exploding, it is necessary for our students, as teenage citizens, to keep abreastwith current events. Brother J. PHYSICAL EDUCATION The physical education department is directed by Mr. Max Burnell. In instructing the freshmen and sophomores the rules and techniques ot different sports, physical education classes devoted time to a wide variety of activities. Softball, track, tumbling, volleyball, swimming, and, of course, calisthenics were all part of the program. We try to go along with President Kennedy ' s emphasis on physical fitness, says Mr. Burnell. With people riding around in cars so much today, they do not exercise as much as they did before so we try to supplement this deficiency by our program. Running and swimming do this the best, he feels, as one builds up the legs and other muscles. 27 Thomas Powers, B.S. B.A. St. Mary ' s College Religion III, English III, II, I Camera Club, Grounds and Building Maintenance Using a new series of paperbound textbooks, the English department has completely changed its curriculum, Freshmen take a course in basic skills; sophomores study American literature; juniors are introduced to English literature; and seniors steep themselves in the classics of Western civilization. Besides the paperbound textbooks, the English department loaned supplemental paperbound books to classes at a considerable reduction in cost. A series of new records allowed students to hear professional actors read the litera- ture they were studying in class. SRA Reading Labs helped increase reading comprehension and speed for the slow as well as the bright. Speakers and a trip to Bye, Bye, Birdie helped the students appreciate the language arts. Such is the English department as directed by Brother David. Prospectively, Brother says, We are planning to introduce an examination based on the standards of schools throughout the nation which students must pass in order to be promoted to the next level. Touhy SENIOR COUNCIL The first things the class did on becoming seniors WEis to elect the most popular, active, and responsible men to the Senior Council. All activities sponsored by the Senior Department were organized and con- trolled by the Council. Under the leadership of Thomas Carroll, President; Richard Anderson, Vice-President; Robert Kelly, Secretary; and Benidict Mortorano, Treasurer; the Senior Council discussed and organized four matters concerning seniors. A series of meetings for the Homecoming Dance produced a minimum cost, maximum attendance event honoring the undefeated football team. Twice during the football season and once after a basketball game, the Senior Council put on lively socials. It is the custom at Saint George for the graduationg class to leave some gift as a gesture of gratitude for all that the students have received. The Council decided to leave to the discretion of the Administra- tion the use of the profits from the senior events. To round out the season and close the year on a good note, the Senior Council held the annual Senior Prom at the Tam-0-Shanter Country Club. JUNIOR COUNCIL The Junior Council, under the leadership of John Earle, President; Joseph Schmidt; Vice-President; Dennis Sbertoli, Secretary; and Charles Conway, Treasurer; has done much for Saint George and the Junior Department in the past year. Under the guidance of Brother Paschal, moderator of the Junior Department, theCouncil gave assistance to the seniors on the Homecoming, sponsored a mixer, and staged the elaborate Junior Prom. The Junior Council also arranged for chartered buses to football games and encouraged greater school spirit. Looking forward to next year, class rings were selected and the Constitution was changed to strengthen the qualifica- tions for senior officers. Bottom Row: W. O ' Brien, B. Groyo, M. Kane, H. FOOTBALL Vazzano in for Nunamaker In my twenty-four years of coaching, with national champions and city champions, this is my first undefeated team, exclaimed Coach Max Burnell following the Dragon ' s defeat of Saint Mel for the Prep League Championship. Called one of the best high school teams in the country by line coach Frank Amato, the Saint George gridders scored a total of 186 points during the season to the opponents ' 30 and allowed only one team to score more than once. These statistics all add up to the best all-round team in the school ' s history. With three All— American players, the Dragons defeated some of the best football teams in the Midwest, overpowering eight different teams from six cities in three states. From their first victory over Toledo Central Catholic until their final win over Saint Mel, the Dragons were feared and respected by all other teams in the area. In oppresive heat, bitter cold, much rain, and actual snow and sleet, the determined Dragon gridders and coaches worked hard to perfect themselvesj and this dogged determination paid off as the record shows. The only blemish to an otherwise perfect season came in Milwaukee when Marquette University High School managed to hang on to an early lead and tie the Dragons, 7-7. After that, Saint George trounced highly-rated Lincoln High School of East Saint Louis and followed it with four other victories. What more can be added? The basketball team brought to Saint George no trophies, but that does not tell the whole story. Sparked by new head Coach Frank Amato, the basketball players represented the school very well in determination, spirit, and will to win. Losing the first four games in the league, the cagers picked up and defeated Saint Mel and De La Salle and ended up in third place. In the regional tourna- ment, the Dragons lost a hard battle to North Chicago in the first round. With a good deal of inexperience and lacking height, the team showed much improvement as the season went on. Using this training, the cagers gave some highly ranked teams some moments of worry. The sophomore team, coached by Mr. Tom Powers, lost once to Saint Patrick by one point, once to Saint Mel by four, and twice to De La Salle (once in an overtime). Victories over Saint Patrick and Saint Mel (in a triple overtime) and other teams, however, made up for losing the close ones. Mike Dennehy dribbles in. Under the coaching of Major Stanley Stann and moderated by Brother Daniel, the Wresding Club of Saint George spent the year doing just that. The wrestlers had no suitable place to practice. After some time in the cafeteria, they finally worked out in the library. The mats used by the team were worn out. This led the wresders to have a drive for Pepsi— Cola tops, to organize a wresding tournament for the freshmen, and to sponsor a basketball game-all for the purpose of buying new mats. Lastly, because of the members ' inexperience, the wresders had no inter-school competition. The club worked on general physical fitness and funda- mental holds and techniques of wresding. Widi all this enthusiasm, this team should make itself felt next year. Bill Schwind gets the better of Stu O ' Byrne. V 1 1 _gr ; Bottom Row: J. Crowley, G. Dvick, R. Hunt, K. Guerre, J. The Dragons won meets with Schurz, Harlem, Lane Tech, De La Salle, and others; and tliey lost only one meet to York in the state sectional competition. The team ' s winning ways are definitely the result of much hard practice and very good coaching. Beginning in late summer and ending in late autumn, the members of the team were always run- ning to improve their speed and conditioning to keep themselves in top physical shape. He bowled a 600 series four out of six matches. Langer, who has been on the team since his freshman year, said: This has been the best team that Saint George has had in four years. Four of the top ten bowlers on the senior team were juniors. Coach Reinhardt said: It was the best team so far in school ' s history. The meet was very close; but with Bob Knoblock ' s half mile, Dan Toomey ' s pole vault, and Tom Nunamaker ' s great discus throw in the closing minutes of the meet, the trophy found its berth in the Dragon trophy case. The track team had few matches this spring. The team started off slowly with a loss to Tech in a practice match. But then individual honors went to members of tlie team who entered weekly open meets around the city. The team took third in the Glenbrook Relays, and the junior team took second in the league championship. Coach Amidei praised his runners for their persevering practice and their hard work. Religion, said Brother Luke, is the distinguishing characteristic of a Catholic High School and as such has great importance in the formation of Saint George students. Under the leadership of Brother Jerome Emilian and Brother Norman, members Roger Giroux, Jerrv Weiss, Mike Osajda, and Jerome Disch lead the team to many victories. The team traveled throughout the area on their road to honor. They debated at Proviso West, North Chicago, Waukeegan, and DeKalb. The team was a small but active group, having won three Degrees of Merit, four Degrees of Honor, and three Degrees of Excellence in the National Forensic League scoring. Members of the Debate team often gathered to brainstorm big competition. Mike Osajdo, Roger Giroux, Gerry Weiss, Mike Schumacker George McDonald tested old radios while Dave Scribner end Phil Schoenwolf watched. For the past two years the Radio Club has been operating in the gym balcony. With their short wave station K9WYL under die supervision of Brother George, the members have been satisfying their avid interest in electronics. Although there have been no dues, the members were active in fund raising activities for die group. The club maintained the P— A system, provided music for die socials, and fixed radios for students. Supporting itself by selling photographs and portraits, die Camera Club has not only revamped the dark room with new shelves, but has added new equipment to take care of tlieir expanded activities Classes for the less experienced members ol the club were conducted on Fridav afternoons. Most important, however, the Camera Club denotes service: service to the DRAGON and GEORGIAN, service to the faculty for special events, service to athletics, and service to the students. Notable in this line was the club ' s part in the Hall of Fame and tlie decorations at the Homecoming Dance. The Poster Club, under Brother William ' s guidance, has again done a fine job. Its ten members made posters for just about every activity and social function of this school year. Since its beginning two years ago, die Poster Club has brought togedier die students in school widi a natural talent for art, and it has maintained high standards of craftsman- ship and efficient, generous service to the student body. Besides scholarship, members must have shown traits of leadership, service, and character. Unable to win first place honors for the eightli straight 3 ' earin tlie Chicago Catholic competition, the Georgian singers spread dieir fame for high-quality performances by appearing at a number of parishes and schools. Distinctions, however, were not want- ing. Lon Wright, Vito Pinello, and Paul Camastro were chosen to represent Saint George in the All— State Chorus in Springfield. The club ' s reputation at home was not lessened either a the Christmas Concert and the Spring Choral Festival were given before packed houses and in beautiiully decorated surroundings. The Christmas Concert featured selections from Rogers and Hammerstein ' s Camelot. At the Spring Concert a number of Civil War songs were sung to com- memorate the Centennial. Contrary to recent customs, the Spring Concert was sung by Saint George students only. The high point of the year ' was the Minneapolis trip. At the invitation of Brother Hilary, last year ' s accompanist and backbone of the Glee Club at Saint George, the entire club boarded a train on May 12 for Benilde High School in a Minneapolis suburb. On May 13, the singing groups from both schools combined to give an outstanding show. Brother David let it be known what he wanted done, and the Glee Club did it. Some projects the club worked on were the Christinas Basket Drive, friendship in school, school spirit, and tlie student council. The members shelved books; managed tlie paperbacks; took care of visual-aids; catalogued, checked and processed new books; and worked at the desk. Bottom Row: M. Hogan, P. Duffy, J. The Brst thing most students looked for was dieir own name; but not finding that, diey setded down to read tlie entire paper. Bob Schmitt and his associates followed a pattern in each issue. News items were covered on the first page, editorials on the second, feature articles appeared in the third, and sports write-ups in the fourth. Using a large staff and getting everyone involved, Mr. Jerome Orr, the faculty advisor, made part of his staff re- sponsible for each of the pages. Thus divided, the editors assigned articles, handled layout, and supervised die proof- reading. Particularly strong were the news articles and wrap-ups of all athletic events. The editorials caused considerable dis- cussion among the students. This is probably the highest complement that can be made to any newspaper. DRAGON Staff; Bottom row; J. Strieker, K. Zwolter, E. The result has been that year after year, a green staff takes charge, lacking die experience and ability to put out a superior book. With diis in mind. Brother Luke enlarged the staffto include] uniors and sopho- mores. Means were taken to train the staff in layout, copy, cropping pictures, and proot-reading. The editors attended the National Scholastic Press Association ' s convention, all participated in a workshop at Marywood, and books and magazines were read to get ideas and beef up on techniques. a . r ;0n? Employing a new finance system that put die yearbook on a sound footing, the editors had greater freedom to use the things needed to improve the quahty of the book. Mike Kirby, Bob Smith, and John Sluga, the editors, were responsible for meeting deadlines. They also decided to make a number of changes-more color, greater use of die theme, a radically different cover, and variable type. Per- haps the most noticeable difference was the greater amount of copy. This emphasizes the fact that the yearbook is not just a picture book, but a history of the 1961 - 62 Saint George school year. GEORGIAN Staff: Sitting; W. Moore, M. Osojda, E. Lopez, B. Annis, J. Its purpose was to honor the football team, which accounted for the life-size portraits of the gridiron stars. Miss Connie Tasto was crowned Homecoming Queen at the intermission; she and her court. Misses Carolyn Conqueror and Ann Nickel, reigned triumphandy over the gala affair. Queen Connie Tasto from Saint Scholastica. Winnie Fenney thought the face was familiar. JUNIOR PROM Under the leadership of the junior department officers and vvitli die help of Brother Walter, thejunior department again produced a delightful and well-planned prom. The theme, Polvncsiun Paradise, was decided on early in the year, and decorations were in the making long before they made their appearance on Friday, April 27. All this was evident from tlie moment one stepped in die door; die gym was a veritable south sea island transported to Sherman Avenue complete widi palms, waves, nets, monkeys climbing trees, plants, flowers, moo nglow, and orchids. The highlight of die evening was the coronation of Ginny Coscant, a junior from Saint Scholastica, and the naming of tlie regal court-Betty Laurie of Saint Scholastica and Barb Skinner of Imniaculata. The Stardusters provided thoroughly enjoyable music and outdid themselves with the twist because it was followed by a five-alarm call for chairs. Pam Lycowski and Mike McGrath chatted at one table while the band took a break. Some of the 1 50 couples danced while others sat and talked, but all had a good time. The court and escorts: John Yacullo, Betty Laurie, Ginny Coscant, Dick Von Hausen, Barb Skinner, end Norm Bennett. Dennis Sbertoli paused momentarily to hail friends across the floor. SENIOR PROM The Twist was big at the Senior Prom. Colortul Tarn O ' Shanter Country Club was host for the Prom oi the 1962 Seniors. The combined bands of George FaneHi and Jules Ryan provided continuous enjoyable music. The many boys who got tuxes or accessories to match their girl ' s dresses added to the color of the dance. The two bonds, working in shifts, never gave the 1 50 couples a break. Naturally, the Georgian editors all attended the Prom: PatV ill- ging. Bob Smith, John Sluga, Sandy Zeker, Mike Kirby and Ann Nickel. The Senior Department officers and their dates: Rick Anderson, Carol Duffy, Bob Kelly, Julie Roske, Jonie Marcin, Tom Carroll, Ben Martorano and Chorlene Berger. Memorial Day, 1962, was a memorable day for the Saint George graduates of ' 62. For the men going to work, graduations was the end of their formal education; for the college- bound, it was a great step. After a welcoming speech by Brother Maurice, John Crowley, the top graduate academi- cally, gave tire valedictory speech. The commence- ment address was given by Brother Leander Paul, F.S.C., president of Lewis College. Right Reverend Msgr. Peter A. Engeln, pastor of Saint Nicholas parish, conferred diplomas to the 167 graduates. Brother Leander Paul delivered the commendement address. Bob Collins received his diploma from Monsignor Engeln.
