With his Faith he is more conhdent of his abilities and responsibilities, and thus is better able to make his contribution to a Christian social order in the world. Imparting this Faith is the aim of the Administration and Faculty. Providing a curriculum which will train youth in fidelity to God and country, and providing activities which will build teen- agers into responsible Christians, is a challenge of our times. The Brothers and laymen who are our teachers have successfully met that challenge. Their manifest Faith in God has given us confi- dence in their direction, and has strengthened our own Faith so that we, too, can meet the every-day demands of Christian living. 9 c D' vc:- ,f7 Brother Maurice. He knew that salvation and success were mere vagaries if he did not persevere in his efforts: If it is worth doing, it is worth doing well! This axiom was the press- ing motive which prompted the knight's attitude of industry and enabled him to achieve his goal-knighthood, the epitome of virtue. Through diligence in our studies, We assure ourselves of a suc- cessful high school career while cultivating a habit which will serve as a force to direct our efforts towards God. The modern knight's ideal of being an influence for good is learned and practiced in our school work. Persistent effort now will give us the strength of char- acter needed in our adult life. Thus we learn that our task in the world need not be-probably will not be-something extraordinary. It is in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well that our souls are saved. 15 Yi, ko Left: An aspiring: ciigincc-i' of ilu- atoniii- age. R 'Whmr -qv. 'hh- .gg ill. vu-5555 - . --- Gam .xdcfiuifiezi Respect for friends and enemies was a necessary part of the for- mation of a knight. It is important that this noble quality be properly cultivated in our present-day youth. Respect for others and their opinions must be inculcated in high school before the formation of true character is completed. Through the close association with one another in our activities around school, a proper Christian attitude towards one another in opinions, judgments, and actions is developed. This attitude con- sists, of course, in seeing Christ in our fellow men, as did the knights of old. For this reason then, we enter the world with a Christian respect for others, and we ourselves can command respect. At a time when the barriers of language have been leveled so that men may meet to control nuclear power, it would seem a necessity to have this mutual respect. It can hardly be achieved in interna- tional affairs if it is not operative in our personal lives. 51 I ,. , .. , A ,, N, . Q. Taking a lesson from the early Romans, 'SA sound mind in a sound body, St. George has no equal in its efforts to provide excellent opportunities to every field of athletics. The student be- comes proficient in athletics in the gym classes and on the school squads, putting to use these newly-acquired techniques in intra- mural and interscholastic contests. Physical achievement does not stand alone as a gain from ath- letic participation, but also a sound mental attitude and keen mind are rewards for consistent efforts. The spirit which holds us in good stead during the contest is also an all-important factor in our fight for salvation. A knight of old developed his physical being and courageous attitude to achieve a noble Ideal. VVe, too, pursue that same Ideal, and our physical prowess, properly motivated, can aid us to attain that Ideal. Courage and fortitude are often the deciding factors in a successful campaign. 81 WiJwe5f ana! af? .2145 The junior team: Above, bottom ron: .lerry Koehler, John Gollogfly. Robert Weaver. Hindered repeatedly by the spring' weather, the team had thirteen games washed out. Nevertheless they still sported an 11-5 record. Through the constant practice sessions and the fighting spirit that prevailed. the squad swiftly shaped up as a capable football machine. Next year's football team will consist largely of this year's JY squad. The time coaching: and excellent co-operation of the athletes on this year's JY team should enable St. Georgie to tield a varsity football team of championship caliber in the very near future. 96 Behind the able coaching and leadership of head coach Bill Roche, and his assist- ants, Bill Kearns and Greg: Langlotz, the '55 edition of the freshman football team had a successful and winnings season. At the start of the school year the squad worked hard at mastering the basic fundamentals. During the season the team showed the ability and fighting spirit which is St. Georgie. The future looks bright for football at St. George if this year's freshman team is an indication of the potential of future Dragon grridders. fke jtliblfe FRESHMAN SQUAD: Bottom row: R. Miller, T. The knight also had the Wisdom to know that these qualities were not due to his own accomplishments, but rather were talents given him by God. So it is with our modern knight, who, upon the completion of his four years of high school, looks back upon his accomplishments, and realizes that all were done with the help of God's Grace. He also realizes that God and the world expect much of him. He clearly sees that his battle has just begun . The tremendous strides men have made in harnessing the powers of the universe create situations unique in the history of the race. Far from faltering in the face of difficulties, Wisdom enables him to realize that the things that matter have not altered amid the material changes. Courageously going forward then, with a diligence born of Faith, he knows that these virtues, tempered with the alloy of char- ity, will enable him to say some day, as did St. Paul, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the Faith. This is the proof of true Wisdom. 113 2 ' ff 77!en Au' Cjrijf Iirmu-: X'1::H , A :vi V' ' SHT 1v':,1-- fb- Q wr' ' X -:xnxx mm: '- . gr- qw TV-1 MA ' :zu ' jr, 'N 1,5 XMI X xrni .:,L ,, lie- ' .lzvy--1 g XA X ' '1 ' rx 112' VI!
