Georgian staff, with the generous help of the lac- ulty and students of St. George, presents the comprehensive story of the 1951-1952 school year in this, the Silver Anni- versary Yearbook. -E., 2' A Jn: .:119i'YyQ'.11L 3195. l..L.l EH li! Inc! QS 1 ft.-l,g,X .9n Weffoipeff The historian's task of setting down facts and figures in chronological order is never complete until he has integrated with the his- tory, the character of the subject. The history of a school, without feeling behind it, is an empty meaningless account. ln St. George, this feeling knows no boundsg it is livedg it is part of a heritage handed to us from our predecessors. No one person could describe it to you, yet it is obviously present since its outward sign is loyalty. Therefore the fol- lowing is an attempt on our part to set down just a few of the accomplishments during St. George's first quarter century. As early as l9l3 it became apparent that the need for a high school for Catholic boys on the north shore was acute. Consequently in 1927, St. George was formally dedicated by Cardinal Mundelein. This began an era of achievement of which any school could well be proud. The very first year of its existence saw the inception of the Mothers' and Fathers' Clubs, which were to do so much for the welfare of the students during the course of the years. At this same time the annual Grade School Basketball Tournament began. In athletics, St. George fared well from the start. ln her first encounter she found herself on the better half of a 6-0 score. This was against Loyola. Perhaps the most im- portant factor in the success we enjoyed then and are having now is our excellent coach- ing staff, which has been maintained throughout the years. ln 1933 our first foot- ball coach was Mr. Robert Clark, who, like his successors, molded a very representative organization. Today we can point with pride to what we may rightfully consider one of the best coaching staffs in the city. In 1943, Mr. Burnell, who has been liked and re- spected by every George's boy, came to St. George from Notre Dame. With his arrival began a new era of Catholic League sports. His very first year of coaching was rewarded by the capturing of the mythical national high school football championship by down- ing a great Mt. St. Michaels team from New York in the Polo Grounds. ln l928, the St. George band was started and in its second year took second place in a citywide contest. The school paper, begun in l927 and then called the Georgian, received first class ratings in nationwide competition in 1931. ln 1930, the debating team, with Loyola as its first opponent, began an un- broken string of victories which ran from 1930 through 1933. lt was only when corn- peting against one of the nation's top-flight oratorical groups in a contest at Northwest- ern University that the Dragon team first tasted defeat. The first school yearbook was put out in l93l as the school matured by graduating its first senior class. Another popular activity, the dramatic club, put on a total of nine productions before 1933. Perhaps all these, plus those honors des- tined to come its way, were due directly to the fine directors with whom this school has been blessed. Brother I. Elzear was the first of the six and was succeeded by Brother Lawrence David who took the school through the perilous depression days. Brother Ber- nard replaced Brother David in 1939 and in 1942 Brother Patrick took his place. In 1945 Brother Iulius took over the guidance of the school, and from this time until the present the school has continued to grow until it is now at its capacity. In 1933, even during the last year of the disastrous depression, the graduating class numbered 88, and the faculty 18. Eighteen years later, a capacity senior class of 266 graduates and 43 faculty members were recorded in the school rec- ords. One development, directly due to Brother Iulius and his successful expansion program, was the construction of a new Brothers' residence, directly south of the school. The home was formally opened in 1950. It is indeed difficult to say what the for- tunes of this institution may be in the future but one thing is certain: future students, teachers, and alumni have a history behind them which might be well nigh impossible to surpass. Sf. John galafzaf cl f S Founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schoo s Brother I. Elzeur Brother Lawrence David Brother Bernard Brother Patrick Brother Iulius Edgal BROTHER I. ELZEAR, who was the first director of the school, established it on a sound basis and was responsible for many of the school organizations which are still in existence. ln 1933, BROTHER LAWRENCE DAVID succeeded Brother Elzear and remained here until 1939. During those two years a steady expansion of the school's facilities was main- tained. Several high awards and recognitions were garnered by the debating club and the school publications. In l939, BROTHER BERNARD relieved Brother David and continued the expansion program begun by him. BROTHER PATRlCK in l942 took over the guidance of the Dragons and during his admin- istration St. George was admitted into the Na- tional Honor Society. The school also received nationwide attention through the medium of its outstanding football team, which captured the national championship. Three years later in l945, BROTHER IULIUS EDGAR began a new chapter in St. George history. During his term the en- rollment grew out of proportion to the facilities of the school. Consequently, under Brother lulius' direction a Brothers' Residence was con- structed, thus giving the students more room. Brothers' Residence. 'lAre we glad we didnlt have to play St. George for the Catholic League championship. These words are attributed to members ot the Mt. Carmel city champions, themselves defeated by the Dragons in an early season practice game, 32-7, They aptly summarize the excel- lence ot the l95l grid team fielded by Coach Max Burnell and the unfortunate situation that kept them out of the Kelly Bowl. Preeleague victories over Leo l8-7 and St. Philips 34-Z6 plus the aiorementioned drubbing administered to the Caravan trorm the South Side, were the auspicious omens ol a successful season. At Lane Tech Stadium the Burnell Boys rambled over a tough De Paul team to the tune oi l4-6. Next week when the score read l3 lor St. This is cr iootball . . . 1 George and U for Fenwick at the half, the Blue and White partisans were in high glee. There was no joy in Dragonville though when the linal gun sounded and the Friars had walked oil witl' a l9el3 win in what turned out to be the crucial game of the season. The other members ot the league on succes- sive Sundays came, saw, and were conquered, St. Pats 67-6, Loyola 20-O, Trinity GLU, and Weber 39-U. The Dragons partly assuaged their disap- pointment in halibaclc and co-captain Dick Fitz- geralds selection on the all-star elevens of the Catholic League, the city, and the state, Terry Hurley, Roy Anderson, Iohn Madden, co-captair Ioe Schopen, and Bob Risdon likewise receivec mention on various all-star teams. Despite the fact that the Dragon basketball team was regarded as underdogs from the very beginning of the season, they got off to a good start, Winning five out of their first seven starts to finish the first round of Catholic league play in a tie for first place, Sparked by the brilliant play, both on offense and defense, of Capt. Iohn Rearden, the l-leavies seemed sure to finish high, having lost only to De Paul and St. Mel. The second round however, was not as successful, due largely to injuries, and the Dragons finished With a seven-seven record in spite of the admirable spirit shown by the team throughout the season. The Lightweights had a more disappointing season. Led by Captain Bernie Horn, they Won ten games While losing l5, but only three of the Wins were in league play. X 7 2' X X V . 3' P For many years athletics and debating societies received the lion's share of attention and publicity as high school ac- tivities, Prior to the establishment of the National Honor So- ciety, leading educators were groping for some means of better stimulating and promoting higher ideals of citizenship than Was being realized through either the emphasis on phys- ical prowess or on mental accomplishment exclusively. At a meeting of the National Association of Secondary Principals in Chicago in 1919, a committee was appointed to study the issue of the formation of a National Honor Society. After an- alyzing the needs of training for good citizenship, the mem- bers of the national committee suggested four standards which they proposed should be the basic qualifications for member- ship in the society . . . Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service, These reports culminated in the formation of the National Honor Society by the National Association of High School Principals in l929. The charter of the St. George Chapter in its constitution bases conditions for eligibility according to Service, Leader- ship and Character. A student must also have a B average for the entire high school years. Since membership in the National Honor Society is the highest single award at St. George High School, great care is exercised in the annual election of Seniors to membership. All faculty members have the privilege of nominating candidates. The names of these candidates are then submitted to a council of teachers for confirmation or rejection. 99 Q , M1 3 , W In 5 E-twigs W it jfwi Y ' an : . For 1951-52 the topic for debate was: Resolved that HA11 Ameri- can citizens be subject to conscription for essential service in time of Qbedafe I ea Wl war . The pros and cons were efficiently handled by the debate class and the members of the after-school debate teams. The year l95l-52 saw several innovations introduced in the many annual activities of the Mothers' Club, Among these were, the first Promette, a Senior Mothers and Sons dance held in the gymnasium. Highlighting the afternoon was an hour of novelty dances, Charleston, jitterbugging, and a squaredance. A good laugh was had by everyone when each of the mothers had to remove one shoe and then go back to her table and be seated. When the music started each senior had to pick out a shoe and find the owner. His Cinderella was then his partner for the next dance. Some of the Seniors were surprised when they found that Mom could dance so well, and that in a good number of cases Moms endurance was astounding. COf course she has had years to practicel Another pleasant innovation was the Skating Party sponsored b the Mothe ' Cl b ' ' ' Y rs u at Arcadia . 4 . let s hope it becomes an annual affair along with the Promette. All the activities of the Club are to benefit the School and the Brothers . . , We wish to take this opportunity to thank them for their part in the Maflpa Festival, the Fall Fashion Show, and the Nazareth Conference, So to Mrs. Blair Varnes, President, her fellow officers, the Board members, and to all the Mothers of the Mothers' Club we, the Administration, the Brothers, the lay faculty, and the student body wish to say 'merci mille fois' for a very success- ful year. jalhera ' No St. George yearbook would be complete Without acknowledgment to the Fathers' Club. Along with the Mothers' Club, it has been responsible for many of the school's eagerly anticipated and ever successful affairs. For years they have planned and staged 2 athletic banquets honor- ing the teams representing the school, and during the lirst se- mester, the annual Father-Son Communion Breakfast is held. Due chiefly to the leadership ot Mr, I. Wing, president ot the club, and Brother Hilary, moderator, they have enjoyed a suc- cessful year.
