,4 Zfzfur nf Pas! The first public high school, known as the Jefferson School, was built in 1867. In 1906 the first four year high school class to be graduated from this school consisted of four girls and three boys. When, on February 14, 1918, the Jefferson School burned, the enrolled pupils were sent to continue their schooling at the St, Charles College, which was located on Third Street across from the present court- house. In the fall of 1918 Junior High School and night classes were begun in the newly con- structed Jefferson School. In 1923 the pupils moved from the St. Charles College to a new building, the present St. Charles Public High School, which was constructed on the site of the old St. Charles Military Academy.
