Qllliilllg the sc:-nc. ics, we juniors are, stepping into new scholastic heights. XX'e have arrived iinally at the ultimate goal of all students seniors at last. Sorry? Rather. but thc memories of thc junior year will be kept locked in a private vault in each girl's heart. One of the highlights of this year was the receiving of our long awaited class rings. Wearing them gave us the distinguished feeling of having reached the ranks of up- perclassmen. Our unforgettable Christmas dance was a grand success. The Colonial provitled 'a lovely setting for the smooth music of Eddie lJalfonso's orchestra. The VVinter Whirl provided an evening of glittering enjoyment, a jewel in our list of successes. Our spiritual stature was increased in Feb- ruary during the three quiet. prayerful days of our annual l'0ll't'ill. Father Norbert was irspirational in his dynamic conferences. We jaunty juniors strove toward the peak of education through participation in school activities. We had representatives in the N.F.L., in the Diocesan clubs, Glee club, basketball, and in the spring operetta, THE FOREST PRINCE, and in the April televised S.B.A. program of songs on WKJF. On the junior agenda, no social function sponsored by the class received more at- tention than the senior banquet. This. our final farewell to the seniors. was an unsur- passed event, a tribute of our esteem for the Class of '54, Nothing could have been done without the help of our homeroom teachers, Sisters Mary Robert, Gonzaga, Carolyn, and Amel- ia, who ably prepared us for our ultimate goal-WSENIORDOM. September brought the memorable initi- ation and Get Acquainted Dayf' filled with fun and frolic for students and faculty. At the Thanksgiving Festival our combined efforts netted 5570. The annual dance was likewise a success. When tryouts came for glee, Sister Gon- zaga faced some terrified sophomores. After the ordeal, however, we had a new and de- lightful activity which resulted in a lead for the operetta, some chorus members, and dancers. The operetta was a fine produc- tion, thanks to all concerned. ln April, the Glee Club had another thrilling experience when they appeared on television. ln the sport spotlight shine the sophomores. Carol Gmuer, Jo Ann Wallace, and Patricia Fiske who made first string basketball. In Forensics and orchestra, the sophomores, too, distinguished themselves. Behind all these achievements is the life of prayer, cultivated in the classroom by teachers, instruction by Father Rodgers, and the annual retreat by Father Alvin An- dres, O. S. B. During the retreat, students considered more thoughtfully the real pur- pose of life and the means to attain it. Before we become juniors, we wish to thank heartily, all the Sisters, especially our principal, Sister Antoinette, our home- room teachers, Sisters Gertrude, Hildegard, Philomena, and Camilla, whose aid and en- couragement were never wanting. setting their course, SOPHQMQRES sail x 'Li' - X.. , its Q, Xb! 3, . Upon entering the main hall, a bulletin directed the eager newcomers to their hoinerooms. The very first pleasant experience was getting acquainted with the nuns and new friendsg the second was to get into the routine of changing classes for each subject. Next came the day of sophomore reckoning, September 17. Green freshies were made a spectacle of humiliation with ignoniin- ious baby bibs, green ribbons, and giant- sized, ill-tasting lollipops. The first an- nual Get-acquainted-Day program in the history of S.B. A. came to a happy conclu- sion. The entire student body participated. The freshman girls contributed a moun- tain supply of candies which was sold dur- ing the Thanksgiving Festival get-together. Next on the agenda was Freshman Open House at which the 57ers displayed su- perb dramatic ability. The program was a tremendous hit with parents, friends, and students. Well known and loved songs and dances of Latin America were portrayed by the talented freshies. A repeat perform- ance of Thirty Minutes at the Fiesta was given later in the spring for the prospec- tive freshies of next year. The quiet silence of the iirst retreat etched a lasting memory in every heart. God bless Father Alvin! The first year at St. Beiiedictis ends on a happy note. The class is looking forward to three more just as happy and pleasant years. OFFICERS Vice-President , ., . E. Winterhalter Treasurer . ,,... . F. Ermond President ,. .. .,.,,.,.. ,. N. They worked with a single-mind- ed devotion, They realized that, to leave to those who will come after them foot- prints in the sands of timew the work would have to be of the highest quality. Under the strain of deadlines, and months of persistent demands, the editor, the asso- ciate edito1's, the business staif, and the typists maintained their composure and accomplished their task. The writing of the senior liners constituted one of the most arduous phases of the yearbook. Claire Bates, editor, is planning the layout of the annual. To every senior a yearbook is a precious legacy. It tells, through its pictures, of a most Colorful span of school life, with its exciting adventures, its quiet, alone-with ALL-AMERICAN-1953 MEDALIST--COLUMBIA PRESS-1953 The smiles on the faces of the stalf members signify the enjoyment they experienced in working for the school. Unconsciously, perhaps, it is this fact that stimulates some students to give time and efforts to produce school publications. The staff of THE BENITA did endeavor to please the student body by attempting a better publication than ever before. THE BENITA, published every six weeks, played an important part in the school life of the Academy. The associate editors, with the help of their advisor, Sister M. Laurentia, presented news, features, and sports, with a much-needed Catholic view- point. The combined staff played a large part in printing a very interesting and read- able school paper. Composed of thirty representatives of various organizations and activities, and also of the sixteen home- room presidents, these middlemen operated as a medium of good will between the Fac- ulty and student body. Heading this energetic group as advisor is Sister Antoinette, our principal. Under her able leadership and with the assistance of Anna Louise Conlon, the president, and the other officers, the Student Council drew up its annual blueprint of student projects. The council members conducted a success- ful courtesy campaign. Its goal was to stress proper behavior in street cars and buses and, in general, proper social relation always and everywhere. Another construc- tive piece of work was the amending of the Constitution to allow bi-monthly meetings. The record of the character-building pro- gram speaks for itself. It did produce very tangible and satisfactory results. OFFICERS Student Council officers check on minutes of last meeting. Left to right are B. L. Popchak, treasurer A. L. Conlon, president E. She is one who has fallen in love with the Great Lover but is not yet old enough to become his bride. These girls reside at the convent and have their own apartments, dining room, dorm- itories, study hall and recreation room. They are under the supervision of a Mis- tress who joins them in their daily schedule of study, Work, play, and prayer. In ad- dition to attending classes at Saint Benedict Academy with the day students, they follow a schedule designed to assist each girl in the formation of good habits, a better un- derstanding of the principles of the Catholic faith, and the living of a wholesome Chris- tian life. The cultural and spiritual advantages for a girl who has thus chosen to nurture that possible seed of a. religious vocation ai'e many. lluring the years of waiting until she is old enough to enter the Novitiate, she is taught to value the religious life in a sincere and prayerful manner. She as- sists at daily Mass and receives Coimnunion in the Convent Chapel and with the sisters, tslie attends Contpline, the oificial night prayer of the church. After three years of serious contemplation and feeling that God has chosen her to abide in the Ilouse of the Lord, she applies for entrance into the novitiate. Upon receiv- ing word that she has been accepted into the community, she joyously dons the ar- mour of love and sets forth to battle in the Spiritual Army for her King. These four qualifications are prerequisites for membership into the National Honor Society. The induction ceremony was held in the auditorium on April 6. Reverend Father McDowell was guest speaker. He presented each girl a gold pin and certificate of mem- bership. The worthy recipients of these a- wards will, undoubtedly, go on to greater achievements in their life's careers. QUILL AND SCROLL Competent membership on THE BENITA and THE BENEDICTA staffs determines each year's candidates for the Quill and Scroll, the international association of high school writers. There are a number of prerequisites for membership other than simply being on the staff of a school publi- cation, one being the achieving of a high scholastic standing, the upper third of the class. Because thirty two members had displayed unusual abilities in their particular pos- itions on the Academy's publications, they were formally inducted into the S. B. A.'s Chapter of the Quill and Scroll. At this ceremony, Sister Antoinette presented the young journalists membership cards and pins. What a wonderful compensation for the ingenuity and the worry involved in editing the school paper and the annual! The staff members gratefully acknowledge the tireless efforts and kindly suggestions of Sisters Louise and Laurentia, their ad- Visors. and membership into the QUILI. and SCROLL QUILL AND SFROLL 1N0wspapf-r? 'T' 'ff 3' CAREER DAY . . . anticipating things to come Career Day is a special day at St. Benedict's. It is set aside to give the senior and junior students a better understanding of the basic requirements for the varied careers open to them after graduation. Sister Antoinette inaugurated the day two years ago to avoid disrupting classes by assembling at one time professional speak- ers from various walks of life to help ex- plain the benefits of prospective careers. In order that all guest speakers may be properly introduced, a general get-to- gether meeting is held in the auditorium. The opening address was given by Mr. Law- rence F. Greenberger, Ph. D., Director of Personal Training for the Kaufmann De- partmen Stores. Mr. Greenberger stressed important characteristics for successful business careers-conventional decorum or the observance of social proprieties is a 'tmust in the business world. Among those represented this year were Duquesne University, Mount Mercy College, Seton Hill, and Saint Mary of the Springs, Pinkerton and other Business Schools, nurses from the Hospital Council of West- ern Pennsylvania, Bell Telephone, Civil and Social Service Departments, School of Beauty Culture, Capital Airlines, and Arm- ed Forces fXVaVes and Vtlacsj. Following the general meeting, members of the Student Council conducted the speak- ers to various classrooms for Hclinic ses- sions. Here discussions on particular ca- reers are carried on Where the students were able to ask questions and air their opinions. Mrs. Lukehart, representing the Pinkerton Secretarial School, and using G. G. Fortune '53 and M. A. Cherick '53 as models, stresses the importance of personal appearance and the grave need of proper etiquette for successful careers. tl 1- 8 Coach BILL GRUBER, BASKETBALL pray together win together Basketball Assistants: F. Gebhardt, Score- keeper, S. Rogal, Timekeeper, M. L. Meyer, Manager. The 1954 basketball season started with an inexperienced team consisting almost en- tirely of sophomore players. Improvements became apparent as the season progressed and, due to the capable coaching of Bill Gruber, confidence made the team fight val- iantly. Despite the early, poor results, cour- age never failed the team as shown by the iight it put up in the Tournament games in the post-season period. St. Benedict was placed fourth in the Class A League, Win- ning four and losing six games. The last. game of the season, a tournament game with Ormsby in the semi-finals proved to be the most exciting, the best--played and most commendable game of the year. High scorer for the '58-'54 season was Carol Gmuer, sophomore, with 266 points. Follow- ing close behind was Pat Fiske, with 263 Outer Circle: C. Frank, M. Boucek, B. Grub- er, P. Fiske, A. Krebs Inner Circle: C. Gmuer, J. Dorgan, J. Wallace, N. Schueler. points Special citation should be given to the three senior guards, Joan Dorgan, Carol Frank and Arlene Krebs. They did a splendid job in keeping the opponents' scores low. Arlene won extra honorsg she received a trophy for being selected a guard on the Parks and Recreation All Around Team. During the four years that Bill Gruber has coached St. l3enedict's team, he led the girls for two successive years to two Class A Championships. Dill is a persistent and methodical trainer. He stresses the impor- tance of high sportsmanlike conduct: whether winning or losing, the team must be Bair and square. Because of his insist- ence on fair play, he has built up a varsity with a fine reputationea challenge each succeeding team must accept and fight to preserve. saint benedicf's basketball record S.
