Sieffert, Treasurer, Seated-M. Mulvihill, Secretary, D. Jackson, President, T. Kute, Vice-President. Our junior year is rapidly reaching its end, we turn back and reminisce the highlights of these days. The first colorful event was the receiving of our class rings in a beautiful, unforgetable ring ceremony, the first ever held at S. B. A. Next we recall our Christmas Dance, The Win- ter Whirl, held at the Colonial. What a grand success it was with an evening of real enjoyment for all. On February 14 and 15, we entertained hundreds of patrons with our presentation of Shubert Alley. In it we lived the story of a small girl struggling so hard to achieve success as an actress in the big city. lWe certainly appreciate Miss Dice's help and patience through all the hetic days of practice and rehearsals.J In March we demonstrated our talent as orators when thirteen of us participated in a Junior Town Meeting on Duquesne's radio sta- tion, WDUQ. The discussion on Universal Con- scription was interesting and exciting. Terminating our list of memories was the Senior Banquet which we sponsored as a final Farewell to our seniors. Staud The Benedicta is a story in pictures of life at S. B. A. In the swift-passing years, we members of '52 may longingly renew acquaint- ances, vividly remember classes and teachers, and graphically recapture the sunniest days of our lives, the carefree, high-school days, by turning the pages of this memory book. Every girl on the staff earnestly co-operated to record the best events of the post four years, the little nothings which are so precicus to the actors in the drama of school life. In har- rowing moments, in the rewriting of master- pieces, during the long, demanding hours spent with Mr. Young, the editors doubted the poss- ibility of their producing a yearbook! But ideas blossomed and developed into The Benedictau of '52. The entire staff extends a sincere thank you to Sister Louise for her expert supervision and patient handling of a difficult assignment. Day before deadline the staff meets and examines the articles. In one corner Mitzi and Marty are speaking enthusi- astically about their writeup, Scads of Fads. This is a new column and requires hard and assiduous work. The girls' predictions on the styles, the materials, and the colors of clothes are very revealing and helpful. June and Angie are working on their copy of The Book Nook . Pat, Char, and Mary Lee meticulously check Glimpses of Graduates, for Iastminute corrections before copy goes to printer. Lois and Kathleen are always concerned over the material handed them for The Chatter Churn . The rest of the staff are bustling about seeing that the required assignments are written and ready to be checked. The proofreaders work continually through the afternoon checking and rechecking the var- ious stories, making sure the grammar is flawless. Each story is read line for line until their job is completed. Marcia, Adelaide, and Izzy arrange the articles in columns separat- ing the news from the editorials. Thanks to Sister Mildred for her assist- ance in supervising and helping the staff. To Mr. Weigand also goes special thanks for contributing all the cuts used in the five issues of the Benita. 1 iw! This year it has given thirteen girls an opportunity to participate in the work and the pleasures it affords its members. The purpose of this organization is to give high school students greater knowledge of the history of Pennsylvania, and hence, a deeper appreciation of the State's share in building up American Heritage. Through the efforts of Sister Paul Marie, C.D.P., the acting moderator, the History Honor Society reached the goals pro- posed in October of 1951. The biggest event of the year was the spring annual tour to a historic spot in Penn- sylvania. In December, the members were priv- ileged to enjoy a shorter tour to Saint Vincent College. A lecture on Catholics and American Freedom was given in Antonian Hall, Mount Mercy College, by Professor J. M. O'Neill, lecturer and author. A contest of important per- sons, places and events in Catholic Western Pennsylvania history was sponsored, which stirred up competition among the students. The students represented in the History Honor Society from Saint Benedict Academy are thankful for the advantage of participating in the varied program of this student organization. 77 t 5' :tj Standing-J. LEADERSHIP. ..they have been iudged by the faculty as the girls with enthusiasm and initia- tive plus, whose example was a potent factor in leading others to greater efficiency. CHARACTER . . . they possessed distinctive char- acter traits which made them Mary-like in their influence upon others. The girls who have been chosen by the faculty as new members of the Honor Society can be classified as l952's WOMEN OF DIS- TlNCTlON. Their four year's training in lead- ership and co-operative endeavors with their teachers and classmates provide a testing ground for community and civic participation. C. of Central Catholic, are girls and boys from Catholic schools in the city of Pittsburgh who wish to broaden their scientific knowledge. At the bimonthly Thursday meetings the members participate in discussions, hear lec- tures, and see demonstrations given by profes- sionals in the scientific field. A noted researcher from Mellon Institute lectured and ran movies on oil and its products. He told the members about the excessively large and sharply pointed drills used to pierce the rock formations below the earth's surface while digging the well. A physicist from Duquesne University spoke on the subiect, The Catholic View Point on Evolution. His theme interested the audience since evolu- tion is a theory which is universally discussed. The pseudo scientist's comment is that evolution contradicts Catholic principles. The talk proved this remark false. A Catholic may or may not accept the theory on evolution as long as he believes that the soul comes directly from God. The girls who compose this organization are selected on the basis of scholarship and literary abilities. Some of their written compositions have appeared in the Annual and the school paper, The Benita, for for each offers an opportunity to exhibit iournal- istic talents. An incentive for scholarly themes, both in prose and poetry is offered the members through various competitive agencies. The school publications, The Benito and The Benedicta also give opportunities for publishing the jour- nalistic attempts of the young aspiring scribes. The members of the Writer's Club have a choice of three fields of writing: poetry, creative writing, and journalism. Honest efforts in one or all these fields are rewarded in the know- ledge that one's creative skills are exercised and find expression in a finished product. What greater satisfaction can one experience than to have his or her theme judged best in a local or national contest! The Club is ably directed under the leadership of Sister Mildred, O.S.B. The main purpose of the Business Club is to organize an active chap- ter in every school teaching business subjects which is to operate completely independent of the Diocesan unit. The first social activity held by the Club was a Communion Breakfast. The members attended Mass and received Holy Communion in a body at St. Paul's Cathedral. A. student what tools are in the hands of a proficient doctor in an arduous operation. Suppose a patient has an unusual brain injury and must have immediate attention. He is rushed to the operating room, prepared for surgery, the instruments are there ready for use, all the essential preparations have been cared for-the doctor enters. The out- come of the operation depends on the skill of the surgeon. He uses the scalpel skillfully and dexterously because he has not only read medi- cal books but has made medical surgery his life's first choice. Religion is the same. It has furnished the students many tools through the weekly instruc- tions of Father Rowan, the talks of Father Wiesmann, the graces culled during the days of annual retreats, plus the knowledge received during the regular religion classes. The Chapel door is never closed. God is present there always ready to listen to petitions and to advise in difficult problems. Yes, these tools are ever at the student's disposal, but they are worthless if they are not put into actual use. Religion cannot be turned off and on like water in the faucet. lt must be exercised today, tomorrow, and all other tomorrows of our lives. All for the Honor and Glory of God! Both organizations spent hours and hours in practice and demon- strated steady improvementg the Glee Club was directed by Sister Gonzaga, and the Orchestra, by Sister Mary Grace. The girls of the Glee Club, with perfectly blending voices, sang the joyful carols for the entire student body during the Pre-Christmas Season. When the 'Cinderella Ballet was played in January, the Orchestra and the Glee Club ccmbined their talents to add to the sum total of enjoyment at its presentation. At the Dedicatory Exercises of the Acad- emy in September, the Glee Club played an active part. The heart-inspiring arrangement of ln A Monastery Garden, and Trees was Second Row-M. Conley, B. DEVELOPING TRUE TEAM SPIRIT St. Benedict's Varsity went out to give her competitors a rough time this year. Due to the expert coaching of Mr. Bill Gruber, the wonder- ful team spirit, the playing ability of the team, and the cheering fans, the Varsity captured the trophy for Class A High School Champion- ship. In the league games, S. B. A. won 7 and lost I. The basketball season ended with a total of 20 wins and 3 losses. The team is to be commended for its long hours of practicing. Three times a week the players could be seen working very diligently to get in condition for their strenous playing. There are many events the team will re- member, the first league game with St. Mary's Sharpsburg, being one. With a tied score and only a minute to play, S. B. A. won by a two point margin, the score being 36 - 34. The league game with St. Rosalia was a hard-fought winning battle, the final score reading 30 - 28. And last but not least of the memorable tilts was the trip to Turtle Creek for the tournament championship. The Varsity will always have the wonderful memories that basketball alone can give them. In league competition for their last year, Pat Garvey, JoAnn Schwab, Rosemary Bergman, Joan Portman, Anita Krevosh and Joan Frank were instrumental in bringing about many vic- tories for S. B. A. The members of the team said the Rosary daily during the season, and they are certain without the help of the Blessed Mother, they could not have won the trophy. The 1951-52 team knows, as will all future teams know, that basketball is not only a sport for fun and excitement, it is a sport for character building. Seated:- H. Jackmenovich H. Gruber, lCoachj ROSEMARY BERGMAN-at the end of four years of basketball, has a fine record. In her two years of Varsity ball, Rosie has stopped many plays that would have been fatal to our victories. VIRGINIA MUTH-proved her worth as a good substitute when she sank those extra two points to tie up the game. A iunior also, she will be one more with which to start next year's team. JOAN PORTMAN-gave the impression of calm- ness on the foor, but always came through when the going got tough. She was noted particularly for her spread-eagle method of guarding. Joan finished her last year of Varsity play with a fine record. JO ANN SCHWAB-was all over the court at once, especially under the basket to get re- bounds. She really kept her hands up when guarding and enabled S. B. A. to regain control of the ball at many critical times. LET'S GO TEAM JOAN FRANK-developed a beautiful long shot that made many of our victories possible and also made her our top scorer. This year was Joan's third year of Varsity basketball which completed her outstanding record as a player. PAT GARVEY-managed to cover a lot of ground once she got control of the ball. She was char- acterized by her stomping technique which helped to unnerve our opponents. Pat's last year on the Varsity was ended with a good record. ANITA KREVOSH-specialized in a long, over- head pass all the way down the floor. Her height added to her ability in guarding and gaining control of the ball. Although she was often forced to play with a bad knee, Kre finished her last year of Varsity ball with a splendid record. DOLORES MCCABE-is as good on offense as defense. However, she plays mostly as a for- ward and sinks many a basket to pile up the points.
