First of all, as newly installed upper- classmen, we started the year 05 in an entirely different way with a big square dance, The Hick Hop . . . the first of its kind sponsored by S. B. A.ers . . . we are proud to record that it was a huge success and provided fun aplenty. Then we sponsored a raile to secure funds for new kitchen equipment . . . and ho, yes, our biggest event, our Christmas dance, The Crystal Ball! . . . Mnn! . . . The Colonial provided a lovely setting for the music of Lee Kelton, and his Orchestra . . . Happy, happy memory! . . . ready to lead S. B. A. through Mary Our spiritual life was not neglected . . . Father Norbert gave us solid food, during our retreat in November . . . those inspiring days of prayer and quiet are still reflectors in our daily strivings . . . And, dear Diary, we will remember the last days of our junior year as the best days . . . we were closest to the seniors during those Good-bye moments . . . in a small way, we were part of the graduation especially on Class Day and the evening of the Senior Banquet . . . which was our way of saying, Don't forget us, your once little sisters. Our closing sentence in you, Diary, is one of hope as we look forward to our seniordom, building it on the unforgettable chapter which we now close with, God bless us. Experiences enlighten the future This year, in fact, since the inception of the organization, members of Saint Bene- dict's Academy have represented the students in the diocesan History Honor Society. The organization sponsored many ace tivities this year, culminating with the annual tour to one of lPennsylvania's his- toric spots. The tour in September took the students and their monitor, Brother Joseph Panzer, of North Catholic, to Braddock's Grave, Fort Necessity, and other points of historic and scenic interests in Somerset County, and ended with a dinner at the Summit Hotel in Uniontown, Fayette County. The main purpose of the History Honor Society is kept uppermost before the mem- bers. It is to help the students to realize more and more the important part Penn- sylvania has played in the development of these our United States. Dear Diary, in our feelings of gratitude and satisfaction for our State's contributions to the nation's greatness, we offer a prayer of thanks to the Giver of all greatness. May He always bless the Keystone State! Science Honor Society Dear Diary: The budding scientists of S. B. A. had a chance to develop their interests in the scientific field through their membership in the Science Honor Society. Together with other Catholic high school students of the diocese, they had the opportunity of hearing a number of excellent speakers and seeing scientific demonstrations. The refreshments and socials which followed the business meetings were always enjoyed by the young hopefuls. Meetings always meant traveling since they were conducted at various high schools and colleges of the district. A particularly interesting meeting was held here at S.B.A. in February with a lecture on Aluminum and a talk on the parks of Pittsburgh. Later, refreshments were served in the cafeteria and made possible a happy get-acquainted party. The S. B. A. girls thank the Director of the Society, Brother Gregory Nazianzen, F. S. C. of Central Catholic, and their Moderator, Sister Regina, for the wonderful meetings their planning made possible and for the knowledge they helped the students to acquire from attending them. Searching for the unknown Science Honor Society kept these girls busy attending monthly meetings and acting as hostesses at the Academy-sponsored gatherings. STANDING LEFT 'ro RIGHTJ: C. Beran, H. At the Academy it ranks among the most important organizations. It does much to develop the writing abilities of the students who, without its encourag- ment and incentives, might otherwise never show their latent creative powers, and so waste their sweetness on the desert air . The prerequisites of membership in the society are outstanding talents in the field of writing, of typing, of Business admini- stration, and other journalistic capabilities. Both publications, the school paper, The Benita , and the annual, The Benedictan, afford the students a fertile field in which they ply their writing skills. May 24 was the date on which the twenty-six members were inducted into the Quill and Scroll Society. Reverend Father Wiesmann, Chaplain of Saint Benedict, formally presented them with their member- ship pins and cards of admission. At this point, the girls felt a great sense of accom- plishment in having achieved something really worth while. After-school meetings . . . broken pencil points . . . last minute articles to check over . . . all memories which the journalists will later look back upon as many happy and worth while moments. With Sister Antoinette as advisor and Irene Hawthorne as president, the Student Council accomplished much of which it can be justly proud. It ironed out many prob- lems and solved many difficulties. The girls proved to be a group of competent, per- severing workers who really aimed high and reached their goal. Each homeroom was represented in the Council by its president. As in the past, presidents of the various clubs and the editors of the Benito. and Benedicta were also privileged members. There was one representative chosen from each class by the members of the faculty. To Sister Antoinette and the Student Council, we say 'Thanks for a job Well done. '63 v. National Honor Society Vital, creative, The seventeenth of April was an ex- citing day in the calendar of senior memo- ries. On that day, eighteen of us were en- rolled in the Benedictine Chapter of the National Honor Society. The solemn cere- mony took place in the auditorium before the entire student body and our parents, Who were specially invited guests for the occasion. Reverend Joseph Kopecky present- ed to each of us a certificate of membership, a smaller membership card to carry about with us, and a gold pin. We felt proud and very grateful for the singular honor be- stowed upon us by our faculty. Character-the ability to stand up for what is good and right at all timesg Leader- ship-the possession of depth of personality and foresight to make others followg Service and progressive -willingness to do more than necessary for the welfare of the school, Scholarship-a high percentage in all subjects . . . these are the four qualifications which are the basis of membership in the organization. We lucky members elected five girls to represent us in the ceremony, Clara Wurstlein, Patricia Saffer, Sylvia Muth, and Joyce Kahn. Each girl eulogized one of the four attributes, and Elizabeth Beggs, in the capacity of Presi- dent, gracefully conducted the proceedings. We sincerely hope that the solemn cere- mony and the joyous sense sense of accom- plishment accompanying this honor may long remain in the hearts of all, particularly the freshmen girls who have witnessed it. May it be for them an unforgettable incentive to do their best during the next three years. STANDING: R. Tolino, P. Geisler, M. Harnett, M. Yardis, A. Purcell, K. McDonough, C. Wurstlein, R. And now, dear Lord, our hearts are filled with gratitude . . . although in the past we fre- quently complained . . . the steep road of education was hard to travel sometimes . . .fthe Midas's touch of gold never came -our way . . . but today is filled with quiet peace . . . because we'll soon receive the pay of four years' labors . . . how brief and few are now the hours . . . wherein we, the class of '51 may still consider ourselves the free gay students of S.
