Q The Shepherd of the Flock Q The Keeper of the Keys Q The Dispenser of Christ's bounties Humbly prostrate at your feet, We, the Graduates of Saint Benedict Academy, of the class of the Holy Year, 1950, humbly dedicate this our Annual to You, our Most Holy Father, Pope Pius XII. As a true Representative of Christ, you are striving to gather to- gether the stray sheep of the Great Shepherd's flock. We humbly pledge our loy- alty to you, Most Holy Father, and pray zealously with you and with the millions of Cath- olics in all parts of the world who raise countless petitions to God for the return of the stray flock into the true fold. In it is seen the gradual growth of bright, eager girls into young women equipped with the knowledge necessary to live a happy, Christian life in the world today. ' Looking back, it is easy to remem- ber those scrawny, scared freshies at initiation, the Christmas program with Santa Claus and all his reindeers 3 those memorable history skits written, direct- ed and acted by talented ones among usg and our first attempt at a social, a skating party, at West View. When the bell called us to our second year we were just as bright, as eager, though not quite as scrawny. The success of our first dance at Assump- tion, and our one-act plays spurred us on and, after mastering our attempts at biology, geometry, business-training, and Caeser's Gallic Wars, we were really upper-classmen. What do you think of that? Half way-and so much to learn, to accomplish. Abiding by the decision of the faculty to eliminate the Junior Prom, we showed our true spirit of co-operation and made the Yuletide Ball a social and financial success. After the presentation of Have Pa- tients, Penelope and excited prepara- tion for the Senior banquet, came the dawn of Class Day and we became Seniors. As always, the end approaches too quickly. In rapid succession came the year book plans - - - the Senior Saddle Swing - - - our trip to the Court House - - - the class play - - - Senior banquet - - - Class day - - - the Prom at the Schenley Hotel . . . May Crowning - - - our class picnic . . . and the climax, Graduation Day. We are now no longer students but alumnae. In the Words of a great Roman - We came, we saw, we conquered. KAHN We, the juniors of 1949-50, look over our third year at St. Benedict's Academy with pleasure mixed with a touch of sadness at seeing it become a part of the past. Our b lg Christmas dance, The Tinsel Twirl, was a grand success as also our radio play, Eyes of Faith, presented by the Dramatic Club of the junior class. Ably guided by our class o,fficers, Katherine McDonough, President, Joyce Kahn, Vice-President, and Gloria Noe, Secretary-Treasurer, we have worked diligently this past year to grow in intellectual as well as spiritual stature. Though our junior year is now only a thing of memory, we look forward with trust to the coming year, hoping to the first seniors prIvIl classes be ' 'eged to have I . in the new St ' de . Benedict Aca- my. Perhaps our home-room teachers, Sisters Ignatia, Hildegard, and Leona, will say a little prayer for us during the summer months that we may all be back next September new ' ' ready to attain scholastlc heights. 38 ne Year Is Theirs, 0 More Is Uurs ROOM 302 THIRD ROW: J- Dariano, M. Under the excellent leadership of our officers, Joan -Portman, President, Anne Walsh, VicePresident, Frances Sweeney, Secretary, and Lois Ferketic, Treasur- er, we overcame every hard problem that confronted us. We demonstrated our social ability by successfully spon- soring our first dance, the Cupid's Caper. Now, still before us, are two more years of wonderful opportunity in which we can prepare ourselves to become worthy members of the social groups which we shall occupy in the world of tomorrow. Let true, Christian woman- hood be our ambition! We are looking forward with plea- sure to being upperclassmen, worthy juniors of Saint Benedict's Academy. And last, but not least, we wish to thank our home room teachers, Sisters Amelia, Isabel, and Demetria, for the interest they showed in our endeavors to advance in the knowledge of God and in our other subjects. Linger In 66Memories ay Dreaded initiation day came and we, the 'Lgreen-freshies, were oflicially introduced to the inner circles of school life. The dance that we shared with the sophomore class at the Colonial was one of the many wonderful happenings of our freshman year. Settling down to develop our in- tellectual and physical faculties, we soon began realizing how true and beautiful is the motto of Saint Bene- dict's Academy, That God May Be Glorified in All Things. Our freshman year laid the foun- dation of our intellectual edifice. We look longingly into the future and see ourselves high-souled sophomores of tomorrow. ROOM 403 THIRD Row: P. Working together as a team, the four divisions of the staff, literary, business, typing, and art, exemplified perfect co-operation and co-ordination. This team work plus the success of the ad campaign assured the student body of an ideal Yearbook. With the generous and capable assistance of Sister Louise, moderator, and Mr. Don Young, make-up adviser, the staff was safely guided through the tedious Weeks of editing the Benedic- ta. The Wonderful photographic Work by Mr. Fred Echert of the Strem Studio and by Mr. Herrman of the Pittsburgh Press Was also of countless value for it contributed first class pictures Which, after all, are the most important element in any memory book. As the link which connects a directive faculty with a co-operative student body, the Council has fostered such projects as monitors in the halls at change of classes and on the street- cars at dismissal, a drive for toys at Christmas for St. Paul's Orphanage, and skits on the P. A. system to improve Facult and tudents school manners and arouse interest in school activities. The Student Council was composed of Sister Antoinette, the faculty ad visor, all homeroom presidents, presi- dents of various clubs, the editors oi' the Benita and Benedicta, and a representative from each class. Under the leadership of Marguerite Barberie, the president, the Council has aimed to raise and to hold high the standard of the school. STANDING: D. Zilliox, R. M. llohrozdravicc, D. llczlia, A. The faculty chose these students in recognition of their fine achieve- ments. The class of 1950 can boast of seventeen members in the National Honor Society. These girls have been chosen on the basis of scholarship, lead- ership, character, and service to their school during their entire four years. They have done much for the honor of their school. Dull pencils, scratched out senten- ces, dead lines, and the final rush to the printer! These were the typical results which attended the completion of the copy for each issue of the school paper. The eager members of the Ben- ltiln staff experienced real happiness when the 'tfinished product arrived hot off the printer's press. Because these sweet memories are recorded in the pages of this book, the staff mem- bers cannot help feeling great satis- faction and pride in what they contri- buted to make the Benita a better and more attractive publication. Striving to keep up the tradition of an excellent news vehicle, the co- editors strove to put into Word-pictures the ideals, hopes, goals, failures, and happy days of the girls at the Academy. Double Trouble and HWEIS reMARX were the most widely read columns during the past school year for they provided wit and humor along with the serious side of school life. The literary guidance for the pub- lication was supplied by Sister M. Louise, a most capable advisor, without whose aid the staff could not have pro- duced such a fine paper. The staff is grateful to Mr. Cyril Wiegand for his saving the Academy hundreds of dol- lars by his generously contributing all the cuts that were used in the five issues of the paper. STANDING: M. Talent Alone Cannot Make A Writer Writing is an art that requires not only skill but also diligence, persever- ance, and long hours of patient practice. Many pencil points were dulled and much paper scribbled over during the preparation stages of the publications of both the Benita and Benedicta. Twenty-five members of these staffs who met the scholastic requirements for membership in the International Hon- orary Society for High School Journal- ists were given the honor of being en- rolled in the Quill and Scroll Society. This honor made the trials and tribula- tions of both staffs appear little indeed. The admission of members into the national high school society was a suf- ficient compensation for all the hard work and persistent efforts which were demanded in editing the Academy's journalistic publications. Due to the congested conditions of the school, no formal induction of the twenty-five honored members was pos- sible. The membership pins and cards of admission were presented to the young would-be journalists by Mother Gertrude in a private ceremony, graced by the remaining seniors and their re- porting teachers, Sisters Louise, Re- gina, and Gonzaga. lll 'I'0ltY ll LITERARY I0Clll'l'Y Historian, --A Prophet Looking Backwards The dusty pages of History hold great stores of knowledge. Members of the H. H. S. dusted off some of these pages and relived the events through their interesting field trips. One of the best excursions of the year was to the Old Economy Settlement, Ambridge. The luncheon, held at the Schenley Ho- tel, was also a memorable event. The students of the home chapter had a very educational and successful year with Sister M. Mercedes acting as the Academy's moderator. The Literary Honor Society or Writers' Club is the newest addition to the High School Federation organ- ization. Its purpose is to find and foster literary talent among high school stu- dents of the Diocese. This year the Society has added radio work to its list of activities. Once a month the society edits a page in the Catholic Observer entitled, The Voice of Youth. Each member of the Club must submit three creative ar- ticles a semester and, if he is a radio member, also a radio script. HISTORY STANDING! M. Hem-lei-, J. Quolke, M. Huttinger, M. Barberie, M. Delving into the Wonders of nature, ambitious students in chemistry and physics strove to further their scientific knowledge. Honor students in these subjects make themselves eligible for membership in the Science Honor Society. At an early fall meeting at North Catholic High School, the Society open- ed its year of social and educational activities. The society spent an active year, making various trips, among them, the one to Harmerville, Pa., to the University of Pittsburgh Institute of Technology, and to an interesting sky show at the Buhl Planetarium. The members of St. Benedict's have benefit- ed greatly through their association vmh the other groups of the Science Honor Society and hope that it may continue its fine work for years to come. Brother Gregory Nazianzen F. S. C., of Central Catholic High, was mod- erator for the year. It is significant that its mem- bership is the largest of any club. The principal aim of the Club is to pray for vocations, that young! men and women may be guided in the correct choice of their life's Work. Sister Terese Clare has piloted the club through a very successful year. Catherine Winter has proven an ex- cellent president both by her capable leadership and her lady-like deportment. Gonzaga, and Doctor Rauterkus, has par- ticipated in many social affairs and contributed its share in enhancing the programs of the year. This year marks the fifth birthday of the Orchestra's existence. Despite the fact that it is still a young club, it has contributed its share to the musical culture of the school. The students of these two groups, who sang and played for the enjoyment of others as well as their own, strove to build milestones in the development of music at the Academy. This year S. B. Every morning and every evening of every school day there was a willing: searcher with a smiling face behind the desk in the library to help students locate needed research material and the desired fiction book. Sister Mechtilde helped to solve the more difficult prob- lems. The Library Club has had many interesting activities spaced throughout the school term. Book Week, planner! with the aid of Sister Hildegrarde, proved interesting with skits, book re- ports, and many eye-catching posters displayed on all the floors of the Aca- demy. Many short skits were presented during the year to maintain interest in the library. There were always fine, educative posters to be seen in the reading room. STANDING: B. Smith, M. J. Baines, J. The senior students' black- board decorations and drawings for the Christmas season will be long remem- bered. With busy pencils, compasses, pro- tractors, and slide rules, the math students earnestly attempted to grasp difficult algebraic equations and geomet- ric theorems. Many times the girls minds were whirling with incalculable coinputations but they perseveringly continued the deductions which sur- prisingly resulted in producing usually the correct answers. Yes, S. B. A.'s basketball team surged through for another bang-up year and showed great sportsmanship and good coordination. It has proved one of the best in the Catholic league. In two years the players have carved an A-No. 1 name in basketball, winning the Class C Trophy in '49, and the Class B Trophy in '50. They attribute their success to the intercession of Mary whom the girls invoked before every game. The team's motto, Victory, through Mary has been an inspiration to the players. During the basketball season if one took a peek into the chapel at lunch she would see and hear the whole team and many supporters praying the rosary fervently for another victory through Mary. Under the capable leadership of coaches, Robert Lapp and Tom Foerster, the playersshowed great improvement in shooting, passing, and in teamwork.
