Vice President Gian gfisfory Dreams, though of a gossamer quality, are not woven in a day, a week, a month, nor a year, their completion marks a series of events and of persons so closely knit as to form one complete picture. We seniors now take time to review our handiwork be- fore we lay aside forever the looms on which we wove the tapestries of our high school lives. Drawing aside the curtain of forgetfull- ness of four years, we again stand as seventy freshmen, enduring initiation, participating in the school activities, especially our own Christmas program, and our skating party. Stone by stone our dream castles rise as we pass from our first year in high school to become sophomores. The chance for turn- about presents itself in the initiation of the new freshmen, thus we renounce the baby- hood period of high school life. Our firsts include our initial entrance into the realm of Shakespeare, as we present excerpts from the Merchant of Venicef' and our first dance, The Cupid Hop held at Hotel Henry. With half our stay at St. Benedict's com- pleted, the days and months speed in rapid flight until we find ourselves juniors. This year found us truly young in heart. Carry- ing out this theme of joyousness we produced Magnolia, a flower whose fragrance will never be lost. The Stardust Ball marked another milestone on our road to maturity. Our souvenir box is almost empty. But as we look forward to the future we are ready to bring' our long-awaited dreams to fruita- tion, due to the wealth of preparation accu- mulated at St. Benedict's. And wistfully look- ing back we say Thank you to everyone who helped us gather these lovely memories to remember forever. Now begins the port- rayal of the adults we have fashioned our- selves. 12 eavenly ueen DOROTHY LINK Bunny ST. Everyone at some time withdraws from the real to find comfort in nebulous realms. Thus it was with our teachers, the Sisters of St. Benedict's. For many years they had been planning and hop- ing, dreaming and praying for the day when their new school, to advance the cause of Catholic education, would stand in St. Joseph's park. Through diligence and hard work this dream castle has commenced to become a down-to-earth one. On September 17, 1947, Mother Gertrude helped to break the ground. The work of construction had begun. To aid us in our attempt at earthly castle building for heavenly purposes, the Blessed Mother helped us celebrate the feast of her Assumption into heaven by graciously permitting the corner- stone laying on August 15, 1948. This milestone, a compliment of North Catholic to further the ideals of Catholic education, will be the fruit of many sacrifices of our Sisters, the Ben- edictines of Mount St. Mary. Dedication of the new academy marked a dream becoming a reality. Pray- ers had already laid an impregnable foundation for our blue-printed- dreams. W--1--Y Planning plus elbow grease bring St. Benc-dict's Academy nearer to com- pletion. Our dream castle is fast becoming u reality. ii- lk -e l ill: . Don- fb gm men Castle building is similar to playing with blocks-we must have a firm foundation lest all our dreams come tumb- ling down. Thus here at St. Benedict's we '6Freshies were quite eager to make a good beginning. Our sisters, the sophs, were very obliging at initiation in the matter of introducing us to school customs. One hundred sixty fright- ened, terrified, little girls suddenly were transformed into a working unit of St. Benedict's Academy. Together we moved steadily forward until now, as we approach the Sophomore year, we are confident that we, with the help of our teachers, have constructed strong foundations upon which to fashion our castles-in-the-sky. Tucked away and perched on the top floor, with a happy and carefree outlook on life, the one hundred and sixty freshies forged ahead with their Catholic edu- cation in a typical Benedictine atmosphere of learning. I. 5 1- OUR CASTLES WITH SOCIAL ACTIVITIES After selecting the appropriate theme of Castles in the Sky, the ex- citing job of editing the '49 Annual was launched. The members of the staff, piloted by Virginia Brady, were aided in the choice and development of this theme by their enthusiasm over the new Academy building. The material help of the underclassmen through their solicit- ing of patrons, both personal and busi- ness, guaranteed the success of the 449 Benedictaf' and reduced the financial worries of the big undertaking. The various branches of the staf, literary, business, typing and art, joined forces under the sponsorship of Sister M. Louise. The generous help of Mr. Don Young, and the excellent photo- graphy done by Fred Echert of Strem Studios and Mr. Herrman of the Pitts- burg Press, were no small factors in contributing to the general success of the work. After weeks of writing, planning, and worrying, the members of the staff file elzedicfa Record Book of Our Endeavors Benedicta Editor, V. They had emerged vic- toriously from the hard struggle of cropping, bleeding and flushing-the task of publishing the 1949 Benedicta was finished. Here was the record book of high school memories dear to the heart of every senior. Following a pe- riod of anxious waiting, the finished product, a dream come true, arrived from the printers and was placed into the hands of the girls. As the years pass on, the graduates can reminisce their happiest days . . . their high school days . . . as they study the pictures-oral review-of their re- ligious and social activities, as preser- ved for them in their memory book. Because nineteen members had shown themselves unusually capable in their particular positions on the Aca- demy's publications staffs, they were formally inducted by Reverend Father Wiesmann into the Saint Benedictis chapter of the Quill and Scroll at a very inspiring, all- school Assembly, Feb- ruary 25. FAITH IS THE BEST ARMOR Guiding a group of youngsters along the pathways of sanctity is a very arduous, but praiseworthy task. We young girls, whose simplicity exempli- fies the intensity of our devotion, must still be given prudent advice as to how best to serve God. Our religion courses do not dwell primarily on the fundamen- tals, for these have been well-learned in our Catholic grade-schools. We now learn to apply the principles of virtue to the problems experienced daily. As our souls advance in the knowledge and love of God, due to the Academy's at- mosphere permeated with His love for us, we truly appreciate that our life's only mistake would be in not becoming a saint. isfbzquiske L5LZi0I , Reverend Bernard Kaelin, Abbot Primate, representative head of the ,A Af l mi- ff ,.,, If 1 I , ,ZZ i A l me ' ll e ef A small segment of Hour' nuns at the Dedication Ceremony ,CJ-Zifk as 6126 eff rmor OL11' Chapel, the citadel of Cl11'iSt'S abiding p1'8SGTlCG ln. In the early spring our affection speaks from the abundance of our hearts as we lay all our troubles and joys at the feet of His Mother Mary, waiting always at our Grotto. In all our classes, love of Him bursts forthg Working' with X and Y we apply the Wonderful formula of U.I.O.- G.D. Reverend Heribert Thiel, O. S. B., Sisters' chaplain, Reverend Ber- nard Kaelin, and Reverend Charles Wiesmann, chaplain of the Aca- demy. SENIORS LEAVE CHAPEL AFTER MORNING SERVICES OW 0 6 OV6 WEE Elizabeth Barrett Browning Wrote a lovely poem in which she fondly asked, How do I love thee? Let me count the Ways. We shall now ask ourselves How do We, here at St. Benedict's love Jesus ? Let us count the Ways. ' We love Him in our studies, in our tears, smiles, hopes, and fears. We love Him While We sing and While We dance, in our classrooms and in our homes. We love Him everywhere, in everything, and in everyone. But most of all We love Him, our Jesus, because He loves us. ! GRADUATES IN PRAYER L. J. Gaffney, N. L. Svoboda, R. Horne. GRADUATES COMING FROM CHAPEL D. Srsic, S. Murphy, N.
