Swinging into action for the Lamplighter Ball in the beautiful setting of the South Hills Country Cluh, the juniors worked with feverish heat selling tickets and soliciting patrons. Their zealous endeavors were also exhibited in the success of the class play, ,lessica's Journeyv. The class managed to reach a much desired peak in forensic activities for several first and second places of honor in speech tournaments were won hy junior girls. Other activities were the pagan hahy and the Christmas seal drives, selling chances for the S. B. A. Grand Drawing, making a number of field trips, and, last but not least, entertaining the Class of '47 at a festive banquet. On September 17, they indulged in youthful frolic hy masquerading the 136 freshies in queer raiment and signs through St. joseph Park. 'lihe next liig yen- ture was the 'lCupid's Hop at Hotel Henry. Members of the sophomore drama- tics club spent weeks in preparing to present scenes from Shakespear's Merchant ol' Venice for the Parent Guild meeting in Dlanuary. They also prepared a spe- cial program in honor of St. Benedict which consisted of a panel discussion on, and sketches from, the life of the Saint. 'lihe sophs also devoted their energies to the various drives and the sale of chances which S. li. gk. sponsored during the course of the year. Freshman Class-Fascinating as Spilled Mercury FRESHMAN CLASS The freshman class of SU established a record last September by enlisting 136 strong, bright, eager recruits. The Future introduced itself on the occasion of a Wiener roast held on the Campus on September 17. The entire student body participated in this happy event, and later, to the Futures embarrassment, it was made a spectacle of humiliation by the sophs with grease, paint, distressing raiment, and ignominious demands. A good time was had by all even by the newly initiated Future,'. The first outside activity of the class was a Skating Party, held on Decem- ber l3 at West View Park. That event was a urollingn success. In the intervals between activities, the Future,' worked strenuously in class participation. There were times when Religion, Latin, Algebra, History and English assignments disturbed the light-hearted lassies. Of course, these classes had their own pleasant moments and added pep', to the already boundless supply. The Future,' had the o ortunit of dis la in its dramatic abilities at Christmas . . . . pp y . The entire senior class agreed to dedicate it to the parents of the graduates of '47. The first big problem was the financing of the publication. The edi- tors and the business staff encouraged the assembled student body to give its whole hearted support. lfach senior chose three or four aids from among the students to help her in securing patrons and subscriptions. As the ad campaign progressed, the money situation became less burden SOTNC. With the generous cooperation of Strem Studio and Mr. Herrmann, a photographer of the Pittsburgh Press, splendid photography gave ample opportunity for the unusual note the staff desired to inject into the layout of the yearbook. The 'irt editors joined their eff . . orts to the literary editors to assure a novel production. After months and months of worry and a final consultation with Mr. Young, the advisor of the physical make-up of the annual, the '47 Bene- dicta made its debut before the student body in blune. The dream of the staff members had materialized. As the students turned and re-turned the pages of the memory book, they expressed appreciative sentiments for the years of enjoymentsu recorded in its pages. There is still one honor the staff membe ' rs are anxious to obtain for their school, namely, that the Catholic School Press Association may award honorary recognition to S. B. A. 36 . . . The one big purpose for its publication was to promote loyalty and respect for the ideals of S. B. A. Efforts of the com- bined staffs, editorial, literary, business, and art, were rewarded when the first issue was enthusiastically received by the student body. It was a bigger paper. Searching Windv, the personal column, was rated as the most-read, the most en- joyed. Another feature that received special commendation was the number of cuts that appeared in each issue. The business staff was saved all weight of finan- cial worries since the office helped to finance the publication from a common ac- tivities fund. Sr. Louise, the faculty advisor, contributed her critical suggestions to improve the general status of the paper. This goal, aided in its attainment by the Student Council Court and the various inter-class meetings with the Court, came nearer fulhllment than at any previous time. Under the able leadership of Mary Thelma Fairley, president, l,ois hlae Nlagerl, vice president and Helen Roos, secretary-treasurer, the Constitution was carefully read and amended according as the officers saw fit. The Council consisted of the presidents of each home room, the presidents of all the clubs and a specially chosen representative from each class. In the spirit of helpfullness rather than that of domineering, the Council listened to the both sides of several touchy problems between students and the faculty, and acted as a mediater between both. As the school year drew to a close, a feeling of ac- complishment was experienced by all the members of the Student Council, a feel- ing of having done their utmost to promote understanding and good fellowship among the students. 39 N2 'LG ZW! SPR ECHI-QN SIE DEUTSCH? livery afternoon at 1:00, a bit of sunny German creeps into S.l3.rX.'s quiet halls and adds just a touch of mystery, of old Vl'orld graundeur to our prosaic classrooms. This curious air surrounds Sis- ter Frances and her small group of enthusiastic German students, Although most of the girls study for the cultural and, possibly, social advantages of knowing a foreign tongue, Anna Jean Kellar has al- ready decided to make the betterment of German-American relations her life work Already the exuberance of this tiny class has bubbled over into the assembly hall twicefxthe girls went to great lengths to make their performance as idiotic as possible, and public opinion has it that both attempts were completely successful. The clubls Christ- mas performance was particularly good. Despite a humerous theme, the girls struck a peculiar nostalgic note. Dressed in peasant cos- tumes with the stage lights dimmed, they sang Stille Nacht to the accompaniment of the little organ behind scenes. According to Sister Frances her little band of Npioneersu will soon be sufficiently advanced to carry on correspondence with real German citizens. Such intercourse is made possible by the Interna- tional Friendship League. The German Club is represented on the Student Council by their president. Louise Doherty. The subject may cause difficulty to the faint hearted, yet the study of it is an asset to every student no matter what future career be chosen. Latin is the oflicial language of the Church. Would not one's appreciation of the beauty of Divine Service be deepened with even a limited knowledge of its language? It is an indespensable aid to the study of law and medicine. Since it is the basis of modern languages, it is an invaluable aid in acquiring French and Spanish. 'lihousands of our words are derived from it, so every student is more proficient in the use of lfnglish for having studied Latin. To maintain interest in the study of Virgil, the upperclassmen, sponsored by Miss Kelly, initiated a Latin club at the beginning of the second semester. Two enjoyable socials were held. The Hrst was a tea at which Father Wiesniaiin, Mother Gertrude, Sr. Antoinette, and the mothers of the girls were guests. The Latin entertainment was followed by a dainty luncheon at which each daughter presented her mother with a beautiful rose. Mary Clare Herrmann, president, Katherine Ditmore, vice presi- dent, and lfileen U'Boyle, secretary, were responsible for the Clulfs interesting but enjoyable activities. Underclassmen, be sure to Respicite finemu before you decide to discontinue Latin at the end of your Sophomore year. 46 N7-Ire gufzden 06 flue pfzoof fies . . . U QU I LL AND SCROLL Membership in the Quill and Scroll, the in- ternational honorary society for high school jour- nalists, is the aim of every aspiring young writer at S. B. A., especially of those students on the staffs of the Benedicta and the I3enita . 'llhe prerequisites for membership are outstanding in- dividual ability in writing correctly the Ifnglish language, and in capably organizing the editorial and business functions of the two school publica- tions. Clear thinking and forceful writings are ac- complishments that are not easily attained. They require hours of concentration and of planning but the effort is worthwhile. 'lihe compensation is membership in the Quill and Scroll. 'lihis organiza- tion has done much to bring out the latent talents of students which otherwise would remain dor- mant. Ir has proven itself a beneficial and even necessary part of a high school journalistic pro- gram for it instills into students the ideals of scholarship. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Character, scholarship, service, and leader- ship-these are the pre-requisites for membership in the National Honor Society. .AX high percent- age average in each subject must also be main- tained in order to be eligible for membership in this society. The faculty selects those girls only, who are high in scholastic attainments and possess good characters. Another requirement for eligibility is that one must be a member of either the 'lunior or Senior classes. 'llhe induction into the organization and the reception of the Nation- al llonor Society pin fwhich the wearer proudly displays? are ample payment for hours of study and seemingly difficult tasks which at times bring no apparent satisfaction. BFNICDICT 'lfhe Benedictine Sisterhood is as old as the order itself. .Xccording to tradition, St. l3enedict's sister, St. Scholastica, founded a convent at the foot of Nlonte Cassino, where her nuns lived ae- cording to the Holy Rule of her saintly brother. Since then, convents under the Rule of St. Bene- dict have never ceased to contribute to Christian culture and civilization. The spirit of prayer was the precious legacy St. Benedict left to his spiritual children. St. Benedict breathed forth his last breath while standing before the altar. l'erhaps this is to signify that his future children would imbide his spirit before the tabernacle. Following the injunction of St. Benedict on prayer, our teachers, at stated times during the day, give public homage through the recitation of the Divine Office, a work to which nothing is to be preferred. 'lihis work is performed in choii stalls which are well adapted for this exercise. llow often we ourselves occupied these same stalls during services in the chapel. i 56 MAY BE GLORIFIED IN ALL THINGS BRIICF DFSCRIPTION OF THF BlCNlCDIC'l'lNF ORDER ffor future remembrancej St. Benedict, whose name in Latin means Hblessedl' and who, therefore, is called by his diciple, St. Gregory the Great, 'Blessed both in grace and in name, was born about the year 480 in Nursia less than one hundred miles from Rome. VVhen he was a young man, he left Rome, where he had been sent for his education, and retired into solitude. After three years he was discovered by shepherds who desired to profit from his instructions. Because the number of followers increased, he built twelve monasteries in the neighborhood and in each placed an abbot over twelve monks, keeping them however, under his own direction. Later, he directed his steps to Monte Cassino, a mountain about half Way between Rome and Naples. Here he built about the year 529, the monastery that was destined to become the most f amous in the history of the Church. At Monte Cassino, St. Benedict wrote his Rule. VVithin two hundred years after his death, its observance had spread from Italy into Spain, France, England, and Germany. As the Middle Ages advanced monasteries under its observance were found in every country of Europe, even in Iceland and Greenland, and in the Holy Land. All other rules were gradually displaced by it, and it held supreme sway until the 13th century. So great was the number of Benedictine monasteries and so conspicious their influence in the conversion and civilization of Furope that until rise of the Mendicant orders, these centuries have been called Wlihe Bene- dictine Centuries. The supreme distinction of the Rule of St. Benedict lies in the fact that it has served successfully as a guide to Christian and holy life for fourteen hundred years. liven today, despite the vast changes of modern social life, it can still be observed almost to the letter, so broad is its spirit, so flexible are its ordinances.
