The junior class having found a staunch, helping friend in Miss Ruzzini, teacher of history, unanimously elected her general chairman of their co-curricular activities. 'lihe Yule Log Ball, held at the William Penn Hotel during the Christmas holidays, was a huge success and rated the class of '47 for having initiated the tradition of a junior prom. The next big event was the hilarious presentation of the junior class play, Beware of fllurder. With the approach of spring, class olicers planned an lfaster dance, Lilac Time, which was held at the Colonial. Social activities were not the only interest of the junior class. 'lihe girls entered wholeheartedly to put over successfully the grand raffle for the huilding fund for the New Saint Benedict's Academy. And just the year is drawing to a close Sister Marcella appointed a temporary staff which edited the juniors' first issue of Benita. Seventy eager pre-sopho- mores eagerly and expectantly await the coming of September, 1946. Our freshman year was packed with studies, activities, and a surplus of fun and frolic. We displayed our untried talents in our Christmas and Saint Patrick's Day programs. Saint Benedict's will long remember our Irish jig, and we shall never forget initiation. The class of ,49 took part in co-curricular activi- ties, especially were the girls interested in forensics, orchestra and swimming. Our skating party rolled over big. In May we held our Science Fair. The ex- hibits demonstrated what we had learned in general science. lfagerly we await the coming school term to prove that although we may be the smallest class in numbers, we shall be the biggest in cooperating with the faculty, the livliest in participating in activities, and a hundred percent loyal to the Blue and Gold. oo ,Q 1 was H, ,i - . 4 new gfk , , Freshman Class -1-Ol 17 r s K v Fourth Row: Marcello Windisch, lflla lfagtn, .Xnnamae Hartman, Patricia Lesnock, Anna Nlae Lang, Kathryn Stokes. l'hird Row: .lean Papania, lidith Dolcnvc, Christine CUl1lL'llll.,l02ll1 lffvllvf. lf0ll21I1H0 Biirlwfiv. The girls selected their officers to guide them during the year. As president they chose Ruth Urbanic, who provided herself worthy of the responsibility placed upon her. She was ably assisted by the vice-president, Lois Pschirer and the secretary, Nlary Lou Holdcroft. Having selected their officers, the club proceeded to accomplish the various duties assigned to them. Their lesson in checking books in and out proved very in- teresting. The girls set out with zeal to acquire knowledge. 'lihey were instructed in the various divisions of the library, the replacement of books and other beneficial duties. Among their tasks were the dusting and repairing of books and the inainten- ance of order in the library. 'lihe club members are proud of the tasks they have ful- filled successfuly. Among their list of accomplishments is the presentation of a program during Book Yveek. The girls dramatized scenes from several good Catholic books. Indeed, the Library Club has held a high place among the various clubs and it is its whole-hearted wish that each year will bring more new members who will also carry out the principles of the club. -17 Standing: Nlary Lou Holdcroft Ruth lfrbanec, -Io .Xnn Steiner Nlary pkllen lsherwootl, Ruth Nlurawski, Patricia Croke, Ann Gallagher. Memories of Vocation Week recall our making posters of the various states in life and careers open to women-panels and Hoor talks given by the students, assem- blies depicting the married, the single, and the religious life as well as the various professions open to Womeng movies, picturing the nursing profession, social service, business careers, scientific investigation, and home makingg and lastly, lectures given by priests and nuns especially interested in the mission fields. The world today needs women of vision-women strong in faith and possessing an abiding trust in the providence of God and confidence in their own ability. Perhaps at no other time in the history of the world has woman been summon- ed to exert her influence and help mold public opinion as she is at the present hour. Woman's role in helping to re-make the world today is colossal. She is called upon to give her best in the scientific, the political, the business, the professional, religious circles, and particularly in the home. Visualizing these needs, S. B. A. organized a vocation club better known as the Maids of Saint Bernard. 'l'he purpose of this group is to study the problems, the requisites ,the joys, the sorrows, the duties, and the responsibilities that confront each of the three states in life. The girls pledge themselves to make a daily visit to the Blessed Sacrament and there ask God to aid with His grace all those who are debating with themselves the question of their vocation, The Vocation Club is now two years old. From its ranks its greatest promoter, Helen Mihm, has reached her eternal reward. Marian Jepson and Mildred Kunzler have entered the convent and received the white veil and the Benedictine habit at Saint Benedict's the latter part of june. 48 mar MLN I l L I c 1 LIN :mx 'Xhrln Xbnuxr ur we no Nll rf r cn :urn 'Norm Mmmwrn 1 an Snhlqhgl 5llNdIl'lQC LLTIIIDI Our ugr intlxu sophomoru found om Ollt lat for rhur snemmglx pentup energx m form mg groups for blologlcil resmrnh and LXI llblIS ur rhk KIIFLCUOII mf qlstcr Pu ll L L mc rusul spuunu to ca Nfl H1088 'S KK Nur IIISIT L 11,0 uf lnr stun Ll s s s un x nut chu! mpmmr xxhulm nn :Nu tha uhsnrur l Nl l, N L K In flu Buhl I TLS f Ol 5 1 I thc tru al ss 49 Languages, odern and Classical From left to right: Salvatrice Lentini, Xlary Constantino, Doro- thy Hirschfield, Lois Isherwood, Therese Lo Bosco, joan Schlegel, Annamae Auth, Ann Horn, Muri- el Hrandl, Patricia Croke, Nlarian Nlasur, Anna Marie Kirner, Ruth Nlages, Mildred Vey, Frances Staud, Dorothy Cienek, Lois Xlae Nlagerl, Patricia Madden, Patri- cia Rochford, Kathryn jones, jane Marshall, lilma Hartung. 7-lie gpcznisli lfarly in September members of the Spainsh class under the direction of Sister Aurelia reorganized the Spanish Club. This unique group of juniors and seniors decided to hand themselves into a Latin clulm, Two hig events were our high lights. Shortly hefore the Christmas recess we held a party in the social hall. Reverend Mother Gertrude, di- rectress of the academy and Sister Antoinette, principal were our guests of honor. Vive sang songs in Latin. served a dainty lunch, and had an enjoyable time. Since our first party resulted in a nice social, we planned another one for Saint Valen- tine Day. This was just entertaining as our first one. Some of our girls made projects for l.atin Xveelc and took them to the liuhl Plane- tarium. Plans were formulated for a lmig l,atin assemhly to he held for the entire student lmody, hut everything was so crowded and the time went so fast toward the end of the year that we were forced to relinquish our final program. fXllons enfants de la patrie, le jour de gloire est arrive - This ancient challenge echoes through the halls of Saint Benedict's each time the French cluh meets and the lusty Voices of the girls yilmrate to the fiery melody, La .War- ,w'1'ff111'.w. l,e Circle Francais opens its meetings with the singing of the French national anthem and the recitation of the llail Mary in French. ln- formal conversation in French. and the playing of games, all in French, during the clulm period give an additional interest in the study of the language and make the French period some- thing more Vital than the mere study of words and the translation of sentences and stories. How many want to learn to play basketball? Through the efforts of Mister Bonavito, Sister Antoinette succeeded in getting a period each week in swimming and an- other in basketball at the Perry High School. The very sight of the pool urged the girls to jump into their swim-suits, take a quick shower, jump into the water there to relax and enjoy an invigorating swim. livery girl was eager to lcarn. The beginners learned how to Hoat, swim, and dive. The intermediates perfected their strokes and added many new ones. The advanced group strengthened their muscles so that soon they may attempt a course in life- saving, Learning the rules of basketball was another activity begun in the early spring. How to hold, to toss, and to catch the ballg trying to make a basket were about all the girls accomplished.
