Sfudezzf omzcif js Sfudeizfsf Glzoice OFFICERS President Dorothy Schoenig Vice-President Betty :Xdams Secretary Kathleen Simon Treasurer jane Diel The Student Council is a group of girls made up of presidents, vice-presidents, and faculty chosen representatives from all re- porting classes. The promotion of student welfare and outside activities are the aims of this representative body. The Student Council meets under the sponsorship of Sister Regina, principal, whenever necessary. Ifach representative brings the problems of her class before this body and here the decisions are made for or against her particular question. VVhenever plans are being made in class for any outside activity they cannot be carried out before the Student Council has been thoroughly informed and given its permission. In this way no one class can have more than its share of outside work. 'llhis council merely voices the opinion of the student body. Ir is the means of ironing out the problems and difficulties of the classes. Some of the issues which have been suggested and passed by this body are as follows: skating parties, dances, class parties, Red Cross, lloly Childhood, Family Rosary, Charm and Per- sonality, and the Nlinute Klan Flag. This organization was introduced in Saint Be-nediet's Academy ten years ago and sinee then has been active and proved itself worthy of its title. Student Council. For in the true sense of these words it really has been a council for the students. 25

ACTIVE IN DEBATING FIELD During the past four years the debating club at S. B. A. has grown both in enthusiasm and popularity. It has developed in the students an interest in public speaking, and given them an oppor- tunity to meet and express themselves in friendly competition with friendly competitors. The debating team has conquered and has been conquered in many bouts, but has always risen with renewed courage and determination. Interest in debating and public speaking developed through the unceasing efforts of Sister M. Perpetua and a small group of girls. Ifach year the club and also the team has grown in mem- bership and reputation. At the present time S. B. A. is listed among the top schools in the debating held. For three consecutive years S. B. A. has tied for second place in the North Side Catholic Section. The debating team has also met a number of schools in other sections of the city. 'lihe debaters attended the annual debating clinics sponsored by the debating team of Mount Mercy College. 'lihey entered the discussion groups and also took part in a series ol' practice debates at the University of Pittsburgh. From these experiences the girls derived both confidence and encouragement. 24

Not everyone is called to consecrate herself solely to the re- ligious lifeg nevertheless, every girl can pray, offer numerous sacri- fices, hear cheerfully the seemingly insignificant difficulties that confront her daily for those who, having heard the Call, may have the conviction, grace, and courage to answer that Call. This is the prime purpose of the cluh. hlemlmers are expected to attend bi-monthly meetings con- ducted under the direction of the moderator, Sister M. Antoinette, spend some time hefore the Blessed Sacrament daily, and include each day in the morning Offering the intention to gain for self and others the grace to follow God's Call willingly and courageously. After the cluh formally organized, the first election of officers took place. Un january 12, Helen Mihm and Margie Holdcroft were elected president and secretary-treasurer respectively. 'lihe memlmers were formally inducted on May 31, the feast of Our Lady of Grace, into the cluh hy Reverend C. VViesmann. lfach girl received a memhership card, a Saint Bernard medal, and picture. 26
