YVe have been guided by them on the pathway of righteous- ness and knowledge, and molded into the young women we are today. ln our hearts there will always be a fervent prayer of gratitude for their confidence, interest, and tolerance which have made our four years at S.B.A. the happiest in our memories. VVe shall cherish their faith in us for it is sweet to know there is someone understanding, loving, and true whose good wishes for us will continue down the years. As there is a time for work, a time for play, there is a time for the spiritual help of every girl's soul. livery 'llhursday the senior class in a body attends Holy Mass and receives lloly Communion at the school chapel. Once every year three days are set aside for the annual retreat. The Retreat is opened by Holy Nlass and the receiving of Holy Communion by all the girls. Confessions, spiritual reading and confer- ences are included in the schedule. Ar the close of each day, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is given and at the close of the last day of the Retreat, the Papal Blessing is given by the Retreat Master. Visits to the Chapel are made frequently by the majority of the student body in the morning before school is in session, during study periods and at lunch time. This year, the senior class is honored to have the Reverend Father Charles YViesmann as their Religion teacher. Before graduation each senior class keeps a day of recol- lection. On this day, the girls recollect in their minds what has been done in the past, and pray for a better and brighter future. Alcott's inspiring story of the March family, their joys and sorrows, has been the favorite of every young girl since it was first published. ln the double cast, chosen by the directors, Dolores Reichle and Mary Jane Kearns played the lovable tom-boy jo, to the satisfaction of everyone. The role of the dainty, feminine, Meg, was enacted by Patricia Murphy and 'llrudy Hartung. The stubborn but lovable character of Amy was portrayed by Mary Zimmerman and Marcella Funk. Shirleen Lacher and Cecilia Schrey, as Beth, gave endearing performances. The role of Nlarmee was brought to life by Shirlee Becker and Rose Marie Brunner. Marion McMahon and Dolores lflias were splendid as Hannah. Sally Moffat, Amyls school chum was interpreted by Kathleen Breitenbach and Mary lfllen McLaughlin. Charlotte Cheetham was cast as Aunt Caroll. Madeline Porter's excellent portrayal of Aunt March will never be for- gotten. After three year's preparation, we were ready for that momentous occasion. However, there is more to presenting a successful play than appears on the surface. Since the class itself is fairly large, and the presentation of the senior play is such a tremendous piece of work, two casts were chosen. Kiffie gram s Xlany other difficulties had to be ironed out. Nliss Vllingerter, our very capable dramatic teacher, being familiar with some of these diffi- culties soon had things straightened out to the satisfaction of all. After much practice, studying of lines, and plenty of hard work, the girls seemed ready to decide upon the nights the play would run. Having considered many suggestions, the faculty finally settled that the play should run three night performances. 'lihese three nights were looked forward to with great anticipation by all the girls. What a thrill it was to hear the appreciative applause of the audience, to hear their joyous laughter which told us that the per- formance was a source of enjoyment for people with heavy hearts in these troubled times. A. has grown both in enthusiasm and popularity. It has developed in the students an interest in public speaking, and given them an oppor- tunity to meet and express themselves in friendly competition with friendly competitors. The debating team has conquered and has been conquered in many bouts, but has always risen with renewed courage and determination. Interest in debating and public speaking developed through the unceasing efforts of Sister M. Perpetua and a small group of girls. Ifach year the club and also the team has grown in mem- bership and reputation. At the present time S. B. A. is listed among the top schools in the debating held. For three consecutive years S. B. A. has tied for second place in the North Side Catholic Section. The debating team has also met a number of schools in other sections of the city. 'lihe debaters attended the annual debating clinics sponsored by the debating team of Mount Mercy College. 'lihey entered the discussion groups and also took part in a series ol' practice debates at the University of Pittsburgh. From these experiences the girls derived both confidence and encouragement. 24 STUDENT COUNCIL First Row: B. Balzer, C. Kress, KI. Breitenbach, E. Giegerich, T. Walter. R. M. 'l'egethoi'l, M. The knowledge of music imparts to the students a sense of proportionate balance between the spiritualistic and the realistic. 'lihen too, periodic training of the vocal chords, as well as training the fingers to the touch of the key board, opens undiscovered channels in the minds of the Stll- dents which may possibly suggest a musical career or profession in later life. Students frequently admit that the singing period is their favorite curricular activity. Singing lessons in school afford many happy hours. They instil in us an appreciation for the beautiful, soul lifting in- spiration that only music and song can offer. Arbor Day started at the Academy with the senior class of '39, and has been kept ever since. To define Arbor Day would he to say it is a day appointed annually as a tree-planting day by nearly every state and terri- tory in the Union. It arose from the alarm felt by public officials over the rapid and careless deforestation in the Union and the realization of what it meant to the future welfare and develop- ment of the United States. The Seniors kept Book VVeek by having each girl read a book from the school library, give an oral report and dramatize the passage that best pleased her. We are proud to have organized such a line club and hope it will continue throughout the coming years. gras ies .dlzifiafiozz The official initiation into S. B. A. came after long wondering and anticipation. Needless to say there were one hundred and six scared and very green Freshies waiting for this day to arrive. Ir came: it went, and happier days were never known. Hair in pigrails, carrying umbrellas was quite a sensationg something to be written in our book of memories. Freshies undergo initiation by the sophs. 32 The Camera Club was chosen as ,Mi 1 A Sitting: B. llelmstetter, ll Callahan, N. Henry, P. Nluiphy, R. Rossen, D. Sehoenig. Standing: ff. El Gircufo gsymzof The school year l 19-H-19-l-SJ found a newly organized club in Spanish, composed of juniors and seniors, under the guidance of the Spanish teacher, Sister M. Antoinette, 0. S. li. Ar its First meeting Margaret Wagner was elected Chairman, and Ruth Rossen, secretary-treasurer. At each meeting held bi-monthly, a short program preceded the business session. On February 13, entertainment in the Spanish motif featured the students from the members of the club. Nancy Manganaro sang Amour, lfdda Geigerich gave a vivid description of the Spanish Fiesta, Dorothy Vey entertained her audience with a talk on Spanish Food. The Playlet, n0ur Lady of Fatima was very impressive. Two Spanish dances were beautifully executed. The entire group sang Aurora,' in Spanish. In order to bring to the girls a better realization of the close bond which exists between our own country and our Latin American friends, the club sponsored a Pan-American Day. High points in the afternoon entertainment were the Panel Discussion on the economic, political, judicial, and cultural interdependence of the Americans, and the singing of f'Flor de Changungan, an ancient Indian Folk song of Mexico. Fiesta Frolicn ended the spring calendar of social events with a touch of the romantic and colorful. The party was planned around the theme, Uur Mexican Cousins , with the national colors as decorations. Spanish entertainment and refreshments were served in Spanish style. It is hoped that an appreciation of Spanish culture and aehive- ment will be inculcated by means of the club. 33 3f6LHO WEEIZ 6072 01' 66 Sxmpathx bv Carol xml Dull Xt l'l1L mnlmru mx NI -6 X QQ Bug crowd IND r t L 54 i , H Y v V' I 4 - - , , ' N 56: Q Corn stalks for mlcmrzntiuns Lmuking intu the fun M 'Y ' ' ' i F Bill :xml l5c'ty Cut :1 mer-n Ll spniwua, ,u H 1 - V4 ' ,. 'lihree classrooms are hlled with their bright smiling faces. The election of class officers took place in the latter part of September and marked the beginning of the regular school year. The girls were disappointed because they could not present the annual class play, due to over- crowded conditions, but a skating party in October at West View Park, made them forget their dissatis- faction and a good time was had by all. In the month of January the girls laid their books aside in order to participate in the retreat conducted by the Rev, Duenser, C. PP. S. The sophomorels own newspaper: the Bio-Newsn published four times a year is a successful undertaking. A few minor plays during Book VVeek and the Community Fund Drive helped to recompense for the absence of a class play. As the year is drawing to a close the girls are looking forward to the fall semester when they will be con- sidered juniors and upper classmen. Besides being excellent students, the freshmen by their active participation in social activities display excellent talent which the class is honored to claim. A combination of generous endeavor, sincerity, and good sportsmanship forms the key that has thus far opened the treasure chest of success in the gradual development of sterling character and per- sonality with truest charm.
