THROUGH Q'0,QZ?d'ZLl.0l4 WE PROGRESS

Page 22 text:

0 Q af dna! Zuni? The United States of America and all other nations on the face of the earth who are en- gaged in this present global war must return to God. Yes, we mean the people of all Ilkl- tions, whether they be the richest of kings, wis- est of philosophers, or lowest among beggars. What we need is a country dedicated to liotl, seeking His help, and bowing to His holy will. Matty say that we do not need God's assistance to win this war: that the generals and ollicers are quite capable of handling the situation. 'l'rue indeed, we answer. The mighty gen- erals and captains at the head of our armed forces do excellent planning and mapping of campaigns, but who gave to these men su- preme intelligence to carry on? Yes, it was the Almighty God in heaven who infused a genius mind into these great men and entrusted to them such grave responsibility. Do you not think that God had foreseen the present con- llict? 'l'hat He was aware of the fact that America would need leaders of genuine abil- ity to work out the strategies of wars? Of course He did, and that is why we have such capable leaders at the head of our ranks. Gods kingdom is built and grows in the hearts of men. just try for an instance to imagine Hitler or Hirohito commanding love front their subjects. Obedience? Yes. Respect? Perhaps. Love? No, for the human heart re- opens front within us. No man can be beaten or whipped or tricked into loving someone else. He ollers his love spontaneously, freely, and generously. We Catholics fear no threatg we fear no persecution. XVe are too deeply experienced to be afraid ol' national movements. Caesar said that he would wipe us out, and England said she would root us out of the Empire. The Pope was many times threatened to be im- prisoned by Napoleon if he did not obey his connnands. Although we are still here and the Holy Father is still in the Vatican, yet we have lost that certain spark of faith in God, which is important to human progress. A faithless country is a Godless country. and any country which is branded by such name cannot hold her head very high in the clouds. XVhy is it that such great leaders as Caesar, Alexander, and many others who have conquered in great wars must die? lt is be- cause they also are responsible to a Being higher than themselves to Whom they must give an account of their every action. Many people are too absorbed with the luxuries of life to think of the Supreme Being to which they owe all their vanities and pleasures. XVe owe to God as well as our country the most and best that we can give. Society has kept God entirely out of the pic- ture. Politically, He exists vaguely. XVith a cynical smile, the politicians place God's name on the coins of the land while that same Name is erased from the text books of our schools. The Catholic Faith which came to this country needs a resurgence during these turbulent times more than ever before. just as every army has its generals, captains, and ollicers who lead their men in the ranks and who map the campaign, we, too, must lead an army on its knees beseeching God's help. Following that love which we owe to God and family, there is no nobler love. no more inspiring. more uplifting love than that of country. So close is their union that man has linked them in that motto: liens cl Pnlrin, - Gad and Cmznlryf'
