I 1 I I I l l Editorial i PEACE Prior to thd war many people, young as well as old, took it for granted that PEACE, defined by Webster as: A pact or agreement to end hostilities was just another word iritroduced into the English language to be forgotten, once attained, until suddenly it would again be shattered by a declaration of war. Today, how- ever, peoples ahd nations are working feverishly for the PEACE that permeated the world at the birth of Christ, Peace on earth to men of good will , for the PEACE that st lled the wind and the waves when the Master, with outstretched arms, comman ed the tumultous deep, Be still, for the PEACE that filled the dubious 'heartsl of the ten followers of the risen Christ when standing in their midst, they healrd the familiar voice, Peace be with you. At present tihe American people as well as those peoples in the various nations of the world, regardless of nationality, creed, race, or color, are united in one com- mon plea to hehven: Lord, give us PEACE. This PEACE can be brought about only by the ending of the war. When the last bomb is dropped, the last gun is firedg when the, declaration of PEACE has been signed, and the boys finally come marching home, then and only then will we again have PEACE on this war- torn earth. We must maintain and defend this PEACE once we have regained this price- less treasure. Wie cannot possibly preserve everlasting PEACE if the people of the nations are codstantly dissatisfied with conditions social, political and economic. lf peoples will at all times disagree with one another in regards to these problems, we shall never liave a lasting PEACE. Love and older must inspire the hearts and wills of the various nations and peoples if we a e to have a true and lasting PEACE, a peace based on the great Commandmentl of Love, a PEACE working in harmony with our national peace, a PEACE of heart and mind, an internal PEACE. From time tb time the class of '43 has been reminded of the necessity of keep- ing PEACE amlong individuals. Not in the exact word itself, but in other terms cooperation, pulling together, group work, etc. We agree that as: teamwork, denied the guidance of our teachers we should never 'have been able to succeed, as a class. We have tried to master this lesson. Slowly but surely, through lectures, urgent requests, bitter experience, and ultimately through the example of our teachers we have learned that success can never be built upon dissatisfaction, dis- sension, greed, por hatred. Our nuns have instilled into us the realization that we are the women of tomorrow. That upon our shoulders will rest the responsibility of maintaining national PEACE. That it will be our duty as citizens of this great Federal Repub- lic to vote into office God-fearing men and women as trustworthy custodians of our national li e. We have been taught to recognize religion as the cornerstone t leaders everywhere recognize the need of religion in social and of PEACE. Gre national life. The Christian religion teaches a real reverence for personality and respect for duly authorized authority. Religion gets one into the habit of safe- guarding the nights and privileges of others. It makes people more tolerant towards law and authority. Having learned these primary yet basic rules it ought not to be difficult for the peoples of the world to unite and keep forever the scourge of inhuman, de- structive war from again descending upon the face of the earth, l Alice Bickert, '43 t if sf it i ft-:JI Qin l i Graf est in t' ultima devote perhap truly l happin nition To U 1 1 Zaz'L'z'uoQ Litude is the recognition and acknowledgment of another's care and inter- e welfare of an individual. GIMBER 'n Hilemoriam On December 4, 1941, death overtook our beloved classmate, Mary Eleene Walsh in her sixteenth year. Her char- acter and personality during her two briel' years at the Academy endeared Mary Eleene to all who knew her. Most keenly does the class of '43 remember her cheery, Hi girls, her kind, sympathetic manner, her joy in living, her last but futile effort to begin her junior year, her loyalty and love for S.B.A., her teachers, and the girls. Adelaide Buechele, '43 Marian E. Gimber, one of our dearest classmates, died August 22, 1940, at the age of sixteen. For the five short months God permit- ted us to know her, Marian conquered the heart of every girl by her understand- ing character and gentle disposition. She was among the best loved girls of her class. Her one ambition was to give her- self to God, to become a novice. Marian will continue to live in the hearts and memory of her classmates. The older g'rls, sensing their nervous tension, chatted gaily with them all the way up the ce CHL walk. As we entered the red brick edifice we were met by smiling nuns w o spoke encouragingly to us. Their cheery words dispelled our fears and we bre' thed a sigh of relief. We were next ushered to our home rooms and intro- duced our home room teachers, Sisters Perpetua and Pauline. Being the first excepti nally large class in the history of St. Benedict's, we were placed into two groups but this division did not separate us in spirit. WVe really felt grown up when actually bragged to our parents and friends that we were studying Latin, Algebr , and General Science. We had a delightful wiener roast on the campus in late eptember, after which we filled the air with melody and song. Exhausted after a hilarious treasure hunt, we dropped on a velvet rug of soft grass under huge s reading oaks and sang and told stories. Then followed the Hallowe'en Party ld by the Sophomores in the Social Hall during which time we were ini- tiated. n St. Patricks Day we presented a playlet to the student body. Due to circum tances beyond our control we were unable to secure a statue of Saint Patrick but we substituted an image of St. joseph and nonchalantly explained our di iculty to St. Patrick. We discarded our cloaks of gaiety and giddiness for the garment of ty and dignity as we retreated back to God under the devout guidance of mes O'D. Hanlon. We now took upon ourselves the glory and problems of upper-classmen. We had as our home room teacher, Sister Gertrude, whose sunny disposition and kindness inspired us to do bigger and better things. Our first social was a military dance held at Saint Boniface. We drew a large gathering and received many compliments on our excellent arrangement. This year also saw the birth of various clubs: the Debating Club with Sister Perpetua as sponsor, the Magic Carpet His- tory Club with Sister Dorothea as Aladdin, the Sewing Club, the pride and joy of Sister Gertrude, and the Science Club was renewed with zeal under the capable supervision of Sister Pauline. Our annual retreat was conducted by Rev. Romuald Walsh, O.P. During this period of our High School career we received the long anticipated treasure, our class rings. We again came into the public spotlight with Honest Peggy, Miss Burnett, and The Ghost in the Green Gown. These plays were niet with hearty enthusiasm. A second time our class was chosen as the garden from1which God plucked a lily from the soil of love, Eleene Walsh. Our hearts were pierced deeply with the sword of sorrow as we searched in vain the classroom, the halls, etc., for a glimpse of the familiar figure of her whom we all loved. We were guests of District Attorney Russell Adams and Judge McNaughterg we also witnessed a court trial which filled us with a new love and appreciation for our American Democracy. The third chapter of our High School life was climaxed by the Senior's prom held at the Highland Country Club. Amid mag- nificent surroundings, gaiety, and beautiful gowns came the melodious magic of Joey Simms and his orchestra and the close of our junior Year. p 19424943 SENIOR President-JEAN! Today we realize that we are not to be envied by the Freshman for we know that instead of the beginning of this oasis of pleasure in our school life, we are coming, all too soon, to its close. Mfith Sister Regina, we planned and enjoyed many pleasant affairs: the skating party held at West View Park, the Hallowe'en Barn Dance held in the social hall which was cleverly decorated, our Valentine dance appro- priately calletl the Heart Hop, the annual week of prayer and self scrutiny under the direction of Rev. E. Heyl, the thrill of having our pictures taken, plan- ning and editing our Yearbook, choosing our Class Play, the last minute suspense before the curtain rises, the queer feeling at our throats during our Last Assembly, the realizatioh of graduation and our honest pride when handed our diplomas. The Class of V43 journeying through St. Benedict Academy, has learned to love The Castle on the Hill, and now as we are about to leave as students we wish our faculty, the students, the many friends we made at school a fond ADIEU. A., but now it is the fulfillment of a dream. Maryrose's college course was spent at Carnegie Tech. Among the top writers of the current year, we find the name of Sue Ryan. She is the writer of some of the best sellers ever copy- writed. Since you probably don't remember or even know her by her pen name we will intro- duce her to you, Mary Grace McCarter, a Senior of the Class of '43. If you have wondered what became of Lois Brennen, tune in station KMI. Lois has just returned to New York from Hollywood where she and Harry James, Jr., have just completed a picture. She is now appearing as vocalist with the current orchestra at the Biltmore Hotel, where Harry james, Jr., has begun a long engagement. Last week a large reception was held in the Hotel New Yorker for the very famous Kath- leen Waters. After graduating from S. B. A. Miss Waters attended New York University where she majored in Journalism. Kathleen has been on the staff of Time and Life magazines. She is proving her ability as a journalist. The golden orb is receding behind the hills, and the sun's rays grow dim at the close of day. The pictures thrown from the mirror on the wall are fast fading. Blue is the symbol of truth. God colored the heavens and the deep sea, blue. Blue is the color in which Holy Mother Church garbs Christ's Immaculate Mother. Blue stands for truth, honor, integrity of character, and purity. NVhite is found in the fleecy clouds that float in the blue vault of heaveng white is the frothy foam of the ocean's waves. White symbolizes chasteness, inno- cence, and strength. Purity does not connote cleanliness of person, or neatness in dress or affability of manners, although these characteristics are her ornaments. Purity is cleanli- ness in thought, cleanliness in speech, cleanliness in action. Clean thoughts evoke clean words, and cleanliness of speech safeguards cleanliness of action. Blue and white are the colors of the Sodality, and every girl in the class of '-13 is a Child of Mary. Banded beneath the blue and white, the class of '43 will continue in the future to fashion their character on the pattern of Mary Immacu- late and guard their virtues, particularly truth and purity as the highest and most valued adornments found in woman.
