A IETIEC T€ THE CIIASS Cf 1988 As you graduate from St. Anthony Village High School to take the next steps in your life's journey, whether further education, a military adventure, an entry-level job or even a time-out for rest and reflection, you take many things with you that will continue to be part of you. You have developed friendships: camaraderie. It is a given that school life revolves around people. Few of us learn well by ourselves. You have found that even through competition — whether for grades, awards, the lead in the play, first chair in concert band, athletic honors, etc. — it was through the support of your friends, the encouragement of your teachers and other school staff, the challenges presented to you by your classmates, and your effort that you achieved those goals. In cooperation with others you understood the true meaning of team spirit. You were able to work together in physics labs, on Student Council, in the choirs, as part of Tri-Metro and High School League teams, on class projects, on the yearbook and newspaper staffs, etc. You accomplished more through the synergy that comes with togetherness than you would have singly. You learned communication of ideas to others through speaking, writing, reading and listening. You have discovered how easily your ideas can be misunderstood by others, how important it is to listen and to be listened to in return, how body language speaks much louder than words, how great it is to write something well, and how much there is to read — if one just had enough time. Many of the opinions you now hold came about as a result of the critical thinking skills you developed. The possibilities you visualize in your mind's eye show the creativity inherent in each of you, and hopefully, you will never lose the wonder and curiosity that comes with a new idea. Think of all the changes that have occurred because someone thought of the computer. Think of how your own world has changed in the 13 years since you began kindergarten. You have adapted to those changes and continue to learn the necessity of flexibility as world changes occur at a fantastic rate. Each of you is a very special and uniquely talented individual. You have and will continue to make choices about your future based upon what you have gained through your K-12 educational experiences. We hope you share what you have learned with others. Remember that you have played an integral part in the life of the St. Anthony-New Brighton School District. All of us who remain behind thank each of you for being someone special. We wish you every success and we celebrate with you!!! SUPERINTENDENT DP. C. MERIWETHER 84 85 ST. Have you ever been in a sticky situation with your mom, Carol LaBelle, or Mr. Rosinski? What did you do to get out of it? You lied! Or at least tried to make up a creative excuse and, hopefully, one that would work. Working in the Student Attendance Office, we have excellent opportunities to pick up on great excuses. One of the best ever came from the hockey captain for missing school after losing the first playoff game: Please excuse me from school yesterday. I had a broken heart. Then there are the people who feel an extraordinary tie to their pets. One student couldn't make it to school for two days because My dog had an in- Sam D'Agostino, Amy Pisansky, and Joe DeFilippis present their creative excuses'' to grown toenail. Another ever-used Mrs. LaBelle. excuse came from the senior class offi- cers after being accused of skipping 7th hour (for the 15th time). We just had to go to Wilshire Park to work on Apple Sales! There are many excuses being used here every day. But we think the seniors have the best and most effective ones. This is very evident when counting daily senior absences! — Becky Dennison, Marc Hauser, Carol LaBelle. Now Nai Thii School Changed Tinea You Tfarited Ninth Gtada? MAI DANG: People are friendlier and more fun to be with. KATHRYN GONIER: Less school spirit. TONY CALGUIRE: We have all changed, but I have not noticed it. PAT EGELAND: Athletes were more team-oriented when I was in ninth grade; today they are more individualistic. ANDY BROWNELL: The school is hobbling along using an old wooden cane duct taped together in the middle to hold it together, but the new weight room is nice. The editorial line-up includes Jenny Blissenbach, Tony Calguire, Christy Schroeder, Katie Conier, and Andy Brownell. people are actually thinking about some kind of future. CHRISTY SCHROEDER: All classes are more together. NANCY ROOT: Seniors are not as old as when I got here. KRISTI NELSON and CHERYL HOLMES: Rules are stricter. Seniors have fewer rights. — By Colleen Geisel JENNY BLISSENBACH: In ninth grade everyone was just trying to get from Class A to Class B with minimal brain damage; now Becky Receives Athena Award The Athena Award is an honor given to outstanding senior girl athletes from metropolitan and suburban high schools by the Greater Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce Sports Committee. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, was one of the twelve Olympian deities in Greek mythology. She encouraged law and order; she was brave, dauntless, and noble. BECKY DENNISON and other area recipients were presented Athena Awards May 9 at the Downtown Mariott. Anne Bancroft, of the Steger North Pole Expedition, spoke to the recipients and made the presentations. Becky has earned 14 letters in these VHS sports: gymnastics, volleyball, track, and cheerleading. Becky's coaches in gymnastics and volleyball agree that she deserves the Award. Gymnastics Coach Corlyce Grant commented, Becky has good leadership ability. Grant added: Becky was captain of the gymnastics team, MVG, and All Conference (2 years). Volleyball Coach Leon Houle stated, Becky is one of the quickest girls I've ever coached. She was the volleyball team captain, MVP, All Conference, and a peer leader on the court. Congratulations, Becky! 136 Pat's Interest In Rock Climbing PAT DRESCHER, VHS senior, claims rock climbing as his principal hobby. Here are his responses to several questions asked of him. HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN ROCK CLIMBING? It's in my blood. My parents have both climbed, my father being a very active mountaineer in Poland __There is a great tradition of climbing in my family and the environment I've been brought up in contributes to this interest. WHAT ARE ITS ADVANTAGES? The ability to conquer your fear and climb impossible looking rocks. Also, great confidence comes from finishing hard climbs. ANY DANGERS OR DISADVANTAGES? There is unparallel danger in solo climbing, but I only do that close to the ground. Climbing long routes involves long airy falls and extreme exposure. Being able to cope with that makes climbing an unequalled sport. I love it. WHO GOES WITH YOU? I usually meet people in Taylors Falls. At home I practice along every day — finger tip pull ups, etc. This summer I'm heading out West with my friend Goudar from Washington, D. C. SOME PLACES YOU'VE CLIMBED - East: Carderock, Great Falls, Old Rogg Mountain, Sugarloaf, Annapolis Rock. Minnesota: Lake Superior North Shore, Taylors Falls (every weekend), my practice wall in my garage. In the West: Tetons, including ascent of Grand Teton. Peter Plays League Volleyball What does senior Peter Grotans do three times a week at North Hennepin Community College? Why play volleyball, of course. Peter belongs to the Latvian Volleyball Club and participates in tournaments with Double A League teams of the USVBAL. These tournaments are held in the Twin Cities and at Mankato State, St. Olaf, and Carleton. Every spring, teams go on a qualifying tour to play in the finals; this year the tour was in Chicago on April 16 and 17. The finals will be held at Robbinsdale High School on Memorial weekend. The finals will feature teams from the Midwest, East Coast, and the West Coast. What are some advantages of playing volleyball? Peter says, At my age, most people would be playing volleyball at the junior level. My competition is a high level .. Some day I hope to obtain a scholarship and play at a Division I college. Good luck, Peter! Kris Sings Soulfully Senior Kris Lindgren began singing (for special occasions or special groups) when she was in the seventh grade. I was absolutely scared to death. I had this terrible shaking in my knees. I thought for sure the audience could see me shaking! Some school events that Kris performed at this school year were Constitution Day in September, the Sno Daze Pep Fest, Recognition Night, Show Tunes, Baccalaureate, Graduation, and the Senior Brunch. What does she like about singing in front of groups? One thing I've discovered is that I have so much more confidence in front of people after I've had the experience of performing. I rarely get nervous when I have to sing; it's just a way I express myself. The most flattering thing that anyone could say to me after hearing me sing is 'You made me cry Kris' favorite songs are slow, the ones about heartbreak because so much expression can be put into them. She named Almost Over You, All at Once, and Anything for You as three of her favorites. 137 PROCESSED BY VR5. COLOR ® STRETCH PANTS PROCESSED BY V.KS.
