ELLSWORTH LARSON Field of teaching: Science Year of arrival at VHS: 1961 Future plans: We plan to do some traveling in Eastern and Southern U.S. Most humorous memory: Our first year was filled with events such as the following ... In the fall of 1961 I was teaching a physics class in Room 205 while electricians were installing light fixtures in the room. After installing 2 rows of lights, the electrician connected the wires and turned on the switch. To everyone's surprise, the lights all had pink bulbs. The room was a pretty pink, but the electrician's face was red. What will you miss most about VHS? The healthful chemistry room Memorable incidents at VHS? Eighteen years ago our babysitter was a student in my 9th grade science class. On Feb. 27 she brought a large cake and Kool Aid for the class for a surprise birthday party for me. It was a surprise because my birthday is in January. Apparently my son had told her the wrong month. Words of wisdom: Be nice and say nice things. TOM SANDBERG Field of teaching: Social Studies Year of arrival at VHS: 1961 Summer plans: Washington. D. C. and Southwest U.S. Future plans: Around the world in '88 Humorous memory at VHS: Morning faculty meetings Words of wisdom. To all GOP's. don't forget to vote on the first Monday after the first Tuesday in November. Memorable incidents at VHS: No BILLIE WESTROM Field of teaching: Gifted and Talented Education Year of arrival at VHS: 1963 What are your summer plans? Relax and get ready for retirement Future plans: First, a trip around the world. After that — who knows? Humorous memory at VHS: Year after year at SAVVY lunches. My favorite award was presented to Supt. Brown. He had gone in to evaluate the German teacher. He sat and observed for the full hour and wrote up his evaluation before he learned that the tacher in the room was a substitute for the day. What will you miss most at VHS? The kids Words of wisdom: Keep fighting to maintain this high school. It's worth it. Memorable incidents at VHS: In 1976 when the decision was made to establish Project GATE — or. as some of the kids call it — St. Anthony's own Little Red Schoolhouse. MAURICE HUGILL Field of teaching: Mathematics Year of arrival at VHS: September 1961 Summer plans: Relax, fish, and travel Future plans- Relax, fish. hunt, and travel Humorous memory at VHS: The time when we put a ball and chain on the leg of a teacher who was getting married the next day. He had to sit in class and file the lock off. What will you miss about VHS? My colleagues, the students, and working with the Math League. Words of wisdom: Never lose your sense of humor. Memorable incidents at VHS: The year we made it into the State Basketball tournament and having the Math Team make the State Tournament for the past 3 years. The incident I was proudest of was sitting along a street in Honolulu in June 1976 when the VHS marching band marched by with my daughter Nancy as part of the band. It was a tremendous moment. Other comments: It doesn’t seem like it’s been 38 years since I started teaching. The old saying does seem to be true: Time flies.” I have really enjoyed teaching at St. Anthony. It is Someplace Special. Center: Ruth Westrom. Standing: Ellsworth Larson. Tom Sandberg, and Maurice Hugill. 4 Teachers To Retire
