While visiting a psychology class during the year. I observed several students looking at pictures of a birthday party a fellow student had when they were in second grade. Remember that dress. one of them said. Look at the way you wore your hair then.” another laughed. Reminisce — to think, talk, or write about remembered events or experiences — that's what Webster’s New World Dictionary gives as a definition. Mr. William F. Carlson, the first principal of St. Anthony Village High School, wrote the following in the first yearbook that was published in 1962. The production of The Villager.' your first yearbook, is a source of great pleasure and has a real significance for all of you I am sure. As has been pointed out several times, all of us have shared the unique privilege and experience of working together in establishing the history of our first year’s development and accomplishments. In addition advances have been made in the other areas of school life. Twenty five years have passed. As you look and read through this year s book, many memories will come to your mind now. five, ten, twenty-five years and perhaps more as you remember and reminisce about your high school years — the best years of your life so far. The high school was completed in 1961 with bricks and mortar. The building blocks that really make up a high school are you the students. You are the ones who have created the traditions, the memories, the spirit that makes our school and community Someplace Special. As some of our teachers retire and each class graduates, more memories and reminiscing take place. I will always remember a story that Ms. Ruth Westrom told me about ten years ago There were three men riding across the desert on their camels. They heard a voice from the emptiness commanding them to get down from their camels, pick up some of the pebbles in the sand, put them in their pockets and ride on — into the darkness. They did as they were told. Daybreak came and each of them examined the pebbles that they had gathered. They found them to be precious stones. They were both happy and sad. Happy because they had picked up the jewels, and sad that they had not picked up more .... Like these three men. each of you as you graduate should be happy that you have applied yourself and learned much, but sad that you did not learn more. Over the last twenty-five years 3,754 students have graduated from St. Anthony Village High School. They have, in some way. been a part of the history, traditions, memories, and a great pride that each of us has for our school. As the class of 1987 walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma they wore the mortar board signifying the accomplishment of commencement — the beginning — to another phase of life.
