THE 1987 VILLAGER St. Anthony Village High School St. Anthony, Minnesota Vol. XXV TRBLE OF ACTIVITIES ATHLETIC5 72 lOO ORGANIZATIONS 120 INDEX 140 25 YEARS AGE) Memories of friendships, memories of accomplishments, memories of activities these are some of the memories that the Villager celebrates! These are the memories that we will carry for the rest of our lives. Going way back, it was during the 1961-62 school year that St. Anthony Village High School chose its school colors (blue and white) and its mascot (husky). The first Villager, published in 1962, was a soft cover yearbook. Village High Views was the official name given to the high school newspaper. Just as the school population increased, so did the school plant. The principal original facilities consisted of the A classroom building, old gym, and the cafeteria, which also served as an auditorium. Additions were the swimming pool and patio, new gym, auditorium, and additional classrooms (now the Middle School). Memories, Memories 25 YEARS AGO Above: Twenty-five years ago. William Carlson was the first St. Anthony Village High School (grades 7-12) principal. Mr. Carlson came here from Northfield and brought with him several teachers. Below: The high school auditorium is named after Mr. O. D. Tingum. the first superintendent of Independent District 282. 5 BOARD OF EDUCATION. Sitting: Interim Superintendent Gale Lennoni Kenneth Hiebel. Chairman; Peter Cartwright. Vice Chairman. Standing Scott Klosterman. Student Representative to the School Board; Robert Manske. Director; Julia Rjorklund. Clerk; John DuRand. Treasurer; and David BordweH. Director. INDEPENDENT DISTRICT 282 BOARD OF EDUCATION Chairman Hiebel awards plaques to Wendy Hardman and Sarah Good lor being selected as members of the 1986 1987 All State Choir. 7 Crystal Meriwether, Acting Superintendent of Schools Ron Laliberte. Finance Director Gale Lennon, Interim Superintendent of Schools While visiting a psychology class during the year. I observed several students looking at pictures of a birthday party a fellow student had when they were in second grade. Remember that dress. one of them said. Look at the way you wore your hair then.” another laughed. Reminisce — to think, talk, or write about remembered events or experiences — that's what Webster’s New World Dictionary gives as a definition. Mr. William F. Carlson, the first principal of St. Anthony Village High School, wrote the following in the first yearbook that was published in 1962. The production of The Villager.' your first yearbook, is a source of great pleasure and has a real significance for all of you I am sure. As has been pointed out several times, all of us have shared the unique privilege and experience of working together in establishing the history of our first year’s development and accomplishments. In addition advances have been made in the other areas of school life. Twenty five years have passed. As you look and read through this year s book, many memories will come to your mind now. five, ten, twenty-five years and perhaps more as you remember and reminisce about your high school years — the best years of your life so far. The high school was completed in 1961 with bricks and mortar. The building blocks that really make up a high school are you the students. You are the ones who have created the traditions, the memories, the spirit that makes our school and community Someplace Special. As some of our teachers retire and each class graduates, more memories and reminiscing take place. I will always remember a story that Ms. Ruth Westrom told me about ten years ago_There were three men riding across the desert on their camels. They heard a voice from the emptiness commanding them to get down from their camels, pick up some of the pebbles in the sand, put them in their pockets and ride on — into the darkness. They did as they were told. Daybreak came and each of them examined the pebbles that they had gathered. They found them to be precious stones. They were both happy and sad. Happy because they had picked up the jewels, and sad that they had not picked up more .... Like these three men. each of you as you graduate should be happy that you have applied yourself and learned much, but sad that you did not learn more. Over the last twenty-five years 3,754 students have graduated from St. Anthony Village High School. They have, in some way. been a part of the history, traditions, memories, and a great pride that each of us has for our school. As the class of 1987 walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma they wore the mortar board signifying the accomplishment of commencement — the beginning — to another phase of life. Each remains in our memories as Someone Special. the building blocks of our school. PIEINCIPAI A ..IE. EOSNSTI What Was Your Impression Of VHS When You First Arrived Here? RON BERG: I thought it was great. I really wanted to teach in a school the size and quality St. Anthony had to offer. Now I’m afraid we are becoming too small. ROGER BJORKLUND: No comment. CRAIG BOWE: Small and friendly. The students are bright, cooperative, and rather a closely-knit group, quite unlike the situation in other metropolitan sub urban schools (e.g.. my old school — Ramsey). JAMES BULLOCK: No comment. EDWARD CLARK: After growing up in a small town. St. Anthony seemed very big city school in 1965. Now. because each of us knows virtually everyone in the school by name, it has a small school image. BARB BRANDNER: No comment. 10 TIM DOONANs No comment. DAVE EVANS: When I first saw VHS. only middle and top floors of the main building were in use. No athletic facilities, only 5 sports for boys and none for girls. First class had 66 members. Won wrestling championship first year with 7-12 squad of about SO boys. SHIRLEY FLITTIE: J aime bien les elevesl lls sont tres sympas! Ca n'a pas change. MARK GAUTSCHI: St. Anthony had a good, solid academic program with fairly enthusiastic students. I feel students are more apathetic about education now. CORLYCE GRANT: It was larger and richer. MIKE HART: No comment. WALT HIRE: I was here when the school was built. It wasn't finished then — 36 years later it seems that it still isn't finished. LEON HOULE: St. Anthony is the same fine school now as it was 16 years ago. The only difference is that we do not have as many students participating in all our activities. MAURICE HUGILL: I thought it would be a very good school to teach in and I think it still is. EllSWROTH LARSON, When I r « arrived, il WM only a big empty budding- In 36 year It ha become a fine school. KAREN LiESKE. I transferred here from Wtlshire Park Elementary so everyone seemed big and loud. Now it just seems normal. DAVE MELBY. Smal school with a large school curricular and extra-curricular program. It really hasn’t changed that much- ROLLIE NESHEIM, In my first year, construction of the building was not yet completed (an addition was being made). Very crowded condition . Now we have declined in enrolment — less crowding — but super facilities. First impression was, I believe that I'm going to like it BRIAN PASTARR, When I first arrived here. I was fresh from substitute teaching in the Minneapolis Public School where I had become accustomed to locked entry ways and armed guards. When I heard St. Anthony teachers talking of discipine problems. I could only laugh. This new school seemed so lame. JOHN OPSATA, No comment. GARY PALM, The first year I was at St. Anthony I thought it was a good place to teach. I was wrong. People like Don Dennison have made this a great” place to teach. RICHARD PEARL, I thought it was one of the lop high schools in the area, and I stll think it is. RITA PLOTNIK, When I first arrived at VHS. I found many students with divided loyalties because they had recently attended Marshall or U. High, two-thirds of the present school plant was not built, and approximately 25 teachers were on the staff. BOB PRUSTi No comment. PAUL REDLINGERi A baby growing, looking and searching for direction, rooms bulging, new staff who were young and eager, new class offerings. Today, empty rooms, older faces, less enthusiasm, but still a quality program, a real need for more students. DAVE SCHLIEF, A busy, active place. Now it seems much calmer. LLOYD SCHRUM Then - a great place to teach, good students and faculty. Now — Students (some of them) seem to have I don't care attitude, more so than years ago. BILLIE WESTROM: A comfortably small, personal school with high academic standards and an excellent music program. I also found it financially sound with no trouble in getting anything for programs considered educationally sound. The only change I see is in regard to financing. JAMES WILKE: Busy — a much higher activity level at St. Anthony in the past. Today, fewer students with a lower activity level. TOM SANDBERG: No comment. KRIS TRELLES: Two things that impressed me about VHS were that almost everyone turned in their homework on time and almost everyone participated in extra-curricular activities or sports. I have only been teaching here since the 1983-84 school year and not that much has changed since then. TOM YUREK: My first impression was that the school was clean and the kids were well mannered. Not much has really changed — the school is sttl clean and the kids, on the most part, well mannered. School Days Skit presented by teachers at Snow Daze: Mr. Gautschi Is on guitari Mr. Pearl. Ms. Freeman. Ms. Flittie. Ms. Grant. Ms. LaPomte. and Mr. Rosinski boogie. GORDY ZIE8ARTH: I came to teach at St. Anthony High School because I thought it had excellent educational programs. My impressions have not changed. 14 IN MEMORY OF MR. DENNISON 1962-1986 Perhaps the most special quality about Mr. Dennison was his honest appreciation and love for his subject. He was able to teach with the wisdom of his experience and the wonder of a child. He could make the way a spider innately knows how to spin a web sound so intricate and technical, but Ins voice and eyes expressed a sheer wonder that our Creator could have the wisdom to author something so incredible. He seemed to regard Ins students in the same light. We were not simply bodies occupying seats but people .Katie Comer TO OUR TORfcVtR TRIbND We walked beside benevolence. And fell its warm concern. We sat with tomes of knowledge-. How could we help but learn. We talked with wit and character. Our spirits lifted high. We heard a worldly wisdom That time would justify. We watched the steps of courage That faltered and went on. We sensed the pains that dignity Would fight to keep withdrawn. We knew a soul that special His mortal song is stilled. The gold he sprinkled lines our paths His mission is fulfilled. Gwen tvans 15 ELLSWORTH LARSON Field of teaching: Science Year of arrival at VHS: 1961 Future plans: We plan to do some traveling in Eastern and Southern U.S. Most humorous memory: Our first year was filled with events such as the following ... In the fall of 1961 I was teaching a physics class in Room 205 while electricians were installing light fixtures in the room. After installing 2 rows of lights, the electrician connected the wires and turned on the switch. To everyone's surprise, the lights all had pink bulbs. The room was a pretty pink, but the electrician's face was red. What will you miss most about VHS? The healthful chemistry room Memorable incidents at VHS? Eighteen years ago our babysitter was a student in my 9th grade science class. On Feb. 27 she brought a large cake and Kool Aid for the class for a surprise birthday party for me. It was a surprise because my birthday is in January. Apparently my son had told her the wrong month. Words of wisdom: Be nice and say nice things. TOM SANDBERG Field of teaching: Social Studies Year of arrival at VHS: 1961 Summer plans: Washington. D. C. and Southwest U.S. Future plans: Around the world in '88 Humorous memory at VHS: Morning faculty meetings Words of wisdom. To all GOP's. don't forget to vote on the first Monday after the first Tuesday in November. Memorable incidents at VHS: No BILLIE WESTROM Field of teaching: Gifted and Talented Education Year of arrival at VHS: 1963 What are your summer plans? Relax and get ready for retirement Future plans: First, a trip around the world. After that — who knows? Humorous memory at VHS: Year after year at SAVVY lunches. My favorite award was presented to Supt. Brown. He had gone in to evaluate the German teacher. He sat and observed for the full hour and wrote up his evaluation before he learned that the tacher in the room was a substitute for the day. What will you miss most at VHS? The kids Words of wisdom: Keep fighting to maintain this high school. It's worth it. Memorable incidents at VHS: In 1976 when the decision was made to establish Project GATE — or. as some of the kids call it — St. Anthony's own Little Red Schoolhouse. MAURICE HUGILL Field of teaching: Mathematics Year of arrival at VHS: September 1961 Summer plans: Relax, fish, and travel Future plans- Relax, fish. hunt, and travel Humorous memory at VHS: The time when we put a ball and chain on the leg of a teacher who was getting married the next day. He had to sit in class and file the lock off. What will you miss about VHS? My colleagues, the students, and working with the Math League. Words of wisdom: Never lose your sense of humor. Memorable incidents at VHS: The year we made it into the State Basketball tournament and having the Math Team make the State Tournament for the past 3 years. The incident I was proudest of was sitting along a street in Honolulu in June 1976 when the VHS marching band marched by with my daughter Nancy as part of the band. It was a tremendous moment. Other comments: It doesn’t seem like it’s been 38 years since I started teaching. The old saying does seem to be true: Time flies.” I have really enjoyed teaching at St. Anthony. It is Someplace Special. Center: Ruth Westrom. Standing: Ellsworth Larson. Tom Sandberg, and Maurice Hugill. 4 Teachers To Retire Marcia McDaniel. Nurse Janet Brodle. Library Aide Joan Eclov. He was well-liked by his teachers and had a real flair for calculus and physics, for those who knew him. he always brought smiles to our faces, for he was always smiling. We will be forever puzzled at the reasons why such a tragedy had to occur. If Joe’s life is to have real meaning, we must learn from him. We must remember to keep the lines of communication open between friends, especially in times of trial. If we let our feelings out and listen to the feelings of our friends, we can help each other and give support. Nothing is bad enough to turn to suicide, but unfortunately it can be too late to even sense that something is so wrong. This was one such occurrence. I will miss Joe and remember him for the rest of my years, and I am sure all of his friends will. too. Steve Med in IN MEMORY OF JOE KESSLER 1969- 1987 GRADUATION IIS MAT m GRADUATION COMMITTEE. Coach Nesheim. why did you resign from coaching football? It has been increasingly frustrating to run the kind of program that I would like, because of our declining enrollment. Therefore. I have resigned from the head coaching position at St. Anthony. I do so with certain regrets because during my 14 years as the Head Coach I came into contact with several hundred fine young men. I will miss my association with them. We have known the joy of championships and the despair of defeat in these 14 years, but the hope that I have as I leave the program is that our program, over the years, has helped young men to mature and grow. Under the leadership of Ruth Westrom, three successful issues were distributed to the students of St. Anthony. Once more, students had the opportunity to gain practical experience in journalism and to see their writing in print. It also gave the entire school a chronicle of many important school activities. Through the course of the three issues, more than thirty students contributed to the writing. But three students — Monika Wahi, Evy Ibarra, and Jenny Blissenbach (pictured below) — spent the time needed to put the paper together and make the whole project possible. — J.
