Natural and supernatural knowledge received through the power of prayer made him a masterpiece of wisdom and prudence. He concealed his brilliance until obedience com- manded him to speak. With profound erudition and clarity of eX- pression, he denounced the acute and unscrupulous minds that were spreading moral relaxation and disorder. In the Thirteenth Cen- tury, he acted as a beacon of light amidst the darkness of the A1- bigensian and Waldensian heresies. Through his teachings inspired by the Spirit of God, Anthony hammered the heretics into sub- mission. St. Anthony of Padua, Hammer of the Hereticsf' taught the triumph of Christ's power in the fight against error and sin. 7 STER M. MISS VIRGINIA DAILEY Physical Education 4 i 5 i E i Q 5 ST D E T B U U Y St. I-lnthnny, Student How did St. Anthony become a great scholar? He made the best use of the powers of his soul: he developed his mind to possess uni- versal understanding and to have all knowledge lead to the Infinite, he trained his memory to store up numerous facts to be used in rela- tionship to new learningg he gave his will complete command over himself to exercise the good in union with God's will. In his quiet manner he prayed and studiedg studied and prayed. He shut out all distractions and allowed the light of wisdom to enter. He medi- tated upon the beauty, truth and love of God. He saw God in the whole of creation. Through application, concentration, work, and prayer, St. Anthony of Padua became one of the greatest scholars produced in the Thirteenth Century. Anthony, Man nf Action A middle-aged man of thirty-six years sits upright in a chair, sings O Gloriosa Domina and dies. Thus ended a brilliant career in the service of God. As in life, so in death: activity could not cease. St. Anthony, eminent scholar and profound professor, used his gifts to draw souls to Christ. This eloquent orator and priestly priest lead a life of sacrifice and prayer, so that the lost sheep would return to the fold. With the tools of moral courage and a deep spirit of faith in Christ, he faced the heretics and destroyed heresy. He fought furiously against the luxury, vice, immorality, and tryanny found in his day. He Worked for the restoration of justice and took a great interest in the social problems of his time. He combined contempla- tion with activity, for his soul burned with a love of Christ and his tongue continuously spoke God's praises. His great activity still lives: even the little children of today know this seraphic saint, St. Anthony of Padua. 95 LE Left: The Holy Thursday Altar of Repose in St. Anthony Church. From his youth St. Anthony exercised the en- ergies of his soul to win the race of life. He out-distanced his ene- mies and left the heretics far behind. He wrestled against the forces of Satan and conquered to bring more souls to Christ. He entered each contest with strength and zeal, fortitude and preserverance, with a spirit of co-operation and a determination to win. He for- got himself and fought to bring victory for the glory of his Captain and School, Christ and the Church. Well could he utter these words as he left the field of life: HI have fought a good fight. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord the just Judge will render to me in that dayf' 139 FQUTBALL l SAINT COACHING STAFF: Hank Ennen, Jacques Grenier, Ennio Arboit. Jacques Grenier became Director of Athletics and head football coach at St. Anthony's in 1946. In the past six years under his guidance, St. Anthony football teams battled their way to the top of the Catholic League twice, in 1947 and 1948. The year 1948 brought forth a Golden Saint team which won the C. I. F. Championship of Southern California, starring the brilliant John Glszewski. Grenier's over-all record at the Saint helm is 40 wins, 10 losses and two ties. Hank Ennen, assistant coach, has completed three years as line-builder at St. Anthony's. Several of Hank's proteges have merited All-City and All-Catholic laurelsz Jim Reed, Vince DiLeva, and Pete Eifert in '-195 Dick Shlemmer, Jack Cheatham and DiLeva in '50g Norm Nelson, Nick Oreb and Ken Lopolito in '51. Reed was an All-C.I.F. selection in '49. Assistant Coach Ennio Arboit helped Grenier and Ennen develop fine ends and backs in his first year on the Saint staff. Arboit, who brings a good record with him from Spaulding Institute in Peoria, Illinois, is expected to aid the Saint cause considerably in 1952. 140 df 5' vi 9 us Q ' V ' was uv , . We are indebted particularly to a noble Catholic lady, who has made possible our enjoyment of the fullest gifts necessary to educa- tion. She has realized the importance of Catholic instruction and training, she has expressed her great love of youth by her generous gifts to our school. Through her magnanimity she has made possible the facilities to enable us to reach greater heights in intellectual and spiritual living. Her gifts freely given cannot be measured in books or material, but they must be appreciated in the light of the Eternal. Through the long years of our lives we shall remember always this noble lady, this generous benefactress, this Christ-like lover of youth. We, the members of the class of 1952, wish to pay particular tribute to her who has helped us become young Christians of strong char- acter. Papal Countess Mary Young Moore, LL.D., we salute you and pray that God and His Immaculate Mother will continue to shower blessings upon you. 182 AEE UWLEDGME TS The publication of the 1952 Anthonian is the result of the co- operation and generous assistance we have received from everyone who had a part its make-up.
