'73 Uaks Salu tes Msgr. Sebastian G. M enke The Rev. Msgr. Sebastian G. Menke, tenth presi- dent of St. Ambrose College, took office as presi- dent in June, 1964. As of June 1, 1973, he is resigning his presidency. Monsignor Menke has been associated with St. Ambrose College since 1926, when he enrolled in St. Ambrose Academy. Through the years he has been a student, football coach, faculty member, and administrator. During his nine years as president of St. Ambrose, Monsignor Menke's accomplishments include adoption of a new alternative curriculum plan giving students more choice in formulating their educational programs. He was a leading pro- ponent of the State of Iowa Tuition Grant-In-Aid Program for Iowa students attending private col- leges, and was among the first leaders in higher education to pioneer inthe participation of stu- dents in institutional matters. He converted St. Ambrose to a coeducational system, expanded the degree offerings at St. Ambrose, inaugurated an educational program for underprivileged students, and directed a six-million dollar development drive resulting in the completion of Hayes Hall, a semi- nary building: South Hall, women's dormitory and food service complex: and the new Fine Arts and Communications Center. Furthermore, to add to his accomplishments, Monsignor Menke was select- ed by Quad City news media representatives as the B'Nai Brith Man of the Year. Thus, the staff of the '73 Oaks dedicate Volume 39 to Monsignor Sebastian G. Menke.

,. .1 .. Q, lf . f' lllsl . Kin. ,f 'V' A ix ' ' N '- ' ' ' 'K V V ' AX... , v if . ' M .. ,V,g TID We find ourselves in an age of constant change and challenge. Our life at Ambrose is by no means an exception. The surroundings, images, and activities of Ambrose speak for themselves. We have moved from day one of our existence toward growth and development. Not only a physical growth of land and buildings is found, but a personal and academ- ic growth of awareness and involvement. For too long we have travelled through an intermittent space of self and self-accomplishment. We cannot allow ourselves to become so narrow minded. Our education cannot merely be one of academics but must be one that encompasses and includes other people and life itself. Life is shaped by clear thinking and innovative minds. Ambrose has produced many and we are v- ' .W W hopeful that many more will yet come from within. Throughout this book we have used many old pictures of Ambrose in order to grasp the total atmosphere and attitude of the campus. We gratefully acknowledge all help we have received: especially - Rev. William Dawson Rev. Clifford Egert Stef Florescu O. J. Pitts Harry A.Weiss Rev. Ray Pacha Bill Reynolds Stephen Edwards Rev. GM.
