As minor consequence the symbol of the bee, displayed on the official seal of St. Am- brose College, is not fully understood. ln the ideal, every college is a community of scholars. In the real, of course, nearly every college falls far short of this. But as long as some of the students are aspirant scholars and some of the faculty established scholars, this phrase under- stood in a general way can, with little hesitation, be used to describe our school. Like the social bees, the scholar, aspirant or established, lives and works in a community. He knows fully what a true community is - not an organization, but an organism. As the bees carry pollen from one flower to another, so does the scholar share his knowledge. He is concerned, not just with teaching people but with reaching people. And like the solitary bees, the scholar spends a certain amount of his time in quiet solitude and in reflection. All bees are dependent upon the queen bees. All scholars are dependent upon Truth. As the one purpose in life for the drone is to mate with the queens, so the basic aim of the scholar's life is to search for Truth. The queen bee is jealous of all her rivals, by its very nature, Truth is intolerant. Howev- er, like all analogies, this one shouldn't be applied beyond its worth. Thus, the emphasis will be on the scholars in their quest for Truth. For this quest is the very soul ofany college. The surroundings, images, and activities of Ambrose speak for themselves. We have moved from day one of our existence toward growth and development. Not only a physical growth of land and buildings is found, but a personal and academ- ic growth of awareness and involvement. For too long we have travelled through an intermittent space of self and self-accomplishment. We cannot allow ourselves to become so narrow minded. Our education cannot merely be one of academics but must be one that encompasses and includes other people and life itself. Life is shaped by clear thinking and innovative minds. Ambrose has produced many and we are v- ' .W W hopeful that many more will yet come from within. Throughout this book we have used many old pictures of Ambrose in order to grasp the total atmosphere and attitude of the campus. We gratefully acknowledge all help we have received: especially - Rev. William Dawson Rev. Clifford Egert Stef Florescu O. J. Pitts Harry A.Weiss Rev. Ray Pacha Bill Reynolds Stephen Edwards Rev. GM. Thompson Francis J. Welch '73 Uaks Salu tes Msgr. Sebastian G. M enke The Rev. Msgr. Sebastian G. Menke, tenth presi- dent of St. Ambrose College, took office as presi- dent in June, 1964. As of June 1, 1973, he is resigning his presidency. Monsignor Menke has been associated with St. Ambrose College since 1926, when he enrolled in St. Ambrose Academy. Through the years he has been a student, football coach, faculty member, and administrator. During his nine years as president of St. Ambrose, Monsignor Menke's accomplishments include adoption of a new alternative curriculum plan giving students more choice in formulating their educational programs. He was a leading pro- ponent of the State of Iowa Tuition Grant-In-Aid Program for Iowa students attending private col- leges, and was among the first leaders in higher education to pioneer inthe participation of stu- dents in institutional matters. He converted St. Ambrose to a coeducational system, expanded the degree offerings at St. Ambrose, inaugurated an educational program for underprivileged students, and directed a six-million dollar development drive resulting in the completion of Hayes Hall, a semi- nary building: South Hall, women's dormitory and food service complex: and the new Fine Arts and Communications Center. Furthermore, to add to his accomplishments, Monsignor Menke was select- ed by Quad City news media representatives as the B'Nai Brith Man of the Year. Thus, the staff of the '73 Oaks dedicate Volume 39 to Monsignor Sebastian G. Menke. X Sig ZA K 1908-1972 iii' 5 Z In Memoriam - Rev. John E. Keating 1 A gentleman is one who never inflicts pain. Newman Father John Edward Keating, 64, a member of the faculty at St. Ambrose, died of a heart attack June 26 in Spokane, where he was teaching sum- mer school at Gonzaga University. A Memorial Mass was celebrated at Christ the King Chapel with Bish- op O'Keefe as main celebrant. Fr. Keating was born May 14, 1908, in Ottawa, the son of John R. and Julia Keating. He attended Loy- ola University in Chicago where he received a Bach- elor degree in 1929 He received a Masters degree from St. Louis University in 1933 and his Ph.D. from the University of lllinois in 1950. Fr. Keating was ordained at Sacred Heart Cathe- dral in Davenport on March 8, 1941. Following his ordination he taught at St. Ambrose Academy and college until 1956 and during that time served as chaplain at Marycrest College in 1942. He was vice rector at St. Ambrose Seminary in 1945. Fr. Keating took a leave of absence in 1956 and returned last August to the faculty of SAC. During his leave he taught at Kent State University, Notre Dame, and Florida Southern College. Reflections St. Ambrose College, the center for much of our growth and development, had at its conception, a philosophical base approximating the ideals of freedom and the pursuit of happiness advocated in the Declaration of Independence. As outlined in the college objectives, St. Am- brose College teaches that man can achieve the greatest measure of happiness in his understand- ing of the meaning of life based on truths about man's relations to the Creater and his fellow man. Basing its very purpose on Christian principles, the institution has committed itself to the pursuit of truth and the respect for the freedom and digni- ty ofall men. What stands today as a liberal arts institution for men and women, St. Ambrose has historically pursued a progressive course of constant growth both physically and intellectually. This institution of higher learning, at present offering a program of undergraduate studies lead- ing to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Arts in Special Studies degree, came into existence when the first Bishop of Davenport, the lVlost Reverend John MclVlullen, one year after the founding of the Diocese of Davenport, decided that one of his primary concerns was the education of youth. He set aside for this purpose two rooms at the old St. lVlargaret's School, now Sacred Heart Cathedral, and engaged two instruc- tors for a handful of boys and young men. -9' LEFT: Rev. A. J. In 1885, the central unit of Ambrose Hall was dedicated on its present site. This same year the college was incor- porated as a literary, scientific, and religious institution. Although it was officially known as St. Ambrose semi- nary until 1908, young men not aspir- ing to the priesthood soon outnum- bered the seminarians. Diocesan priests, supported by lay colleagues, were not only in tuned to their time, but often set the pace for progressive higher education. ln 1929, women were allowed to attend late afternoon and evening classes. Ten years later, the arrangement was dis- continued, when St. Ambrose encour- aged the opening of a sister college, Marycrest. Later, nurses were allowed to attend classes also to be discontin- ued. In 1967, the present co-educa- tional system that presently abides was established. ful, i ' - M, we .. - ,A I 1' . 2, 7 SAC theatre was conducted in the above auditorium which was housed in Ambrose Hall. Today, it houses a recreation center. During World War ll, the location St. Ambrose was chosen as a base for the training of United States Naval officers. Because of this arrangement, in October, 1945, Secretary James V. Forrestal, bestowed the U.S. Navy's Certificate of Commendation on the college. The recognition by the United States Navy, an outstanding athletic program, and respectable alumni, were some of the not- able causes for an upsurge of student en- rollment, including students from every part ofthe country. Today St. Ambrose has grown to an insti- tution with eight major buildings, ninety faculty members and twenty-six major areas of concentration. More than sixty thousand people claim St. Ambrose College as their Alma Mater and each year more than 1100 full-time students are enrolled. Located on six blocks of residential areas in north central Davenport, the college's buildings are grouped in the south two- thirds of the campus with the athletic field and parkingareas on the north. .QM Q i -- ' st 'f X- ,f 3 1. After much anticipation and planning for Newman College Cthe name that the new college was to obtainj, the merger remains for many a dream that practically touched the surface of reality. ln September of 1973, St. Ambrose will experience a rebirth. And with this revitalization, efforts will be made to secure the future of St. Ambrose. Hope will be that this institution of higher learning will be not be hit by a trend that is literally closing the doors on small private colleges. Recruiting techniques will be revamped, a new administration will take office, and St. Ambrose College will continue its purpose of educating young people as Bishop John Mc- Mullen began over ninety years ago. I learned that racial tensions are caused by a malcontented few, and anyone who disagrees is probly malcontented too. One profess helped me learn, poly si was the best subject yet, says he, the system just ain't right, its schemes you must detect. I learned that Tom Aquinas must really have dug on law cause no sane man otherwise would have wrote 'Sum logica'. So you believe that we too would create a myth - yet myth our arch enemy - as a tool has bled us profusely Only the truth will deserve our allegiance. He feels that the new team will win its share of games. Although the Bees are not as strong in pitching as the Coach would like, Gary Laake, Harry DeLange, Mark Panno, Karl Burmeister and Bob Oderwald are expected to reliably handle the starting chores. Jerry O'Rourke and Mark Tripolino will be in the bullpen. Hitting is our strongest point. Karl Lu- zum .400, Bo Carroll .391, Mike Pusc- as 381, Dave Thomason 382, Skip Whalen .318, Rich Louck .333, lead on impressive punch. The Coach feels that he is strong up the middle with Louck catching, the superb combination of Thomason and Oderwald at short and second, and Randy Bahl and John Cornelis in center. Steve Cutler, Dave Walters, Paul Kelsey and Curt Wilson are expected to continue with their fine performance. TO THE FACULTY: The noted philosopher Etienne Gilson writes of the teacher's function as caus- ing the learning in the pupil's rnind. lt is in this causality that the eminent dignity of teaching lies. Perhaps this particular casualty can be further explained. lf the teacher does not have an intellectual life outside the class as well as in it, the stu- dent probably will not. lftheteacher does not cultivate a love of Truth and does not manifest this love, chances are the stu- dent never will. lf the teacher does not unify his own scatterings of experience and knowledge, the student most likely will not. To our faculty, holders of these weighty trust, the faculty is introduced. Reprinted from OAKS dedication 1959 RIGHT: lVlr. Diane 167 9 117 17 The Oaks staff would like to dedicate this page to our advisor, Mr. John Schmits. Mr. Schmits has exemplified for us much of the tradition of Ambrose. His grasp of serious educational and academic pursuits is skillfully blended with his cheerful Sure, that's easy for you to say approach to the challenge of full living. The staff thinks that lVlr. Schmits has found his tune of his students and work while the rest of us are still looking. We give our thanks to him for his many self- less hours of devotion to make this yearbook tru- ly represent Ambrose in its reflections. ,,, , i l J l A
