Expansion of the coIlege's facilities is now taking place to meet the growing needs of the school by the oaks. This change is visibly reflected in the new and the proposed campus buildings and facilities. Another mirror of this progress is the presence, for the first time officially, of the college woman on the St. Ambrose campus. The official admission of full time women stu- dents to the halls of this institution of higher learning is a real credit to this liberal arts col- 2 lege. Now, St. Ambrose is a liberal arts college. The opportunities offered by St. Ambrose are now available to the modern women. Because this is the original year of the college woman as a full time student here, the Oaks deems it proper to concentrate its efforts towards highlighting this innovation. We, the staff of the '69 Oaks, intend to reveal the invasion of the fair- er sex onto our traditional male campus. Stu- dents of St. Ambrose College, the academic school year 1968-1969 shall be remembered as the Year of the Woman. Fa- ther graduated from St. Ambrose College in 1935. He began his long career of service at St. Am- brose in 1940 when he was a high school teacher and assistant principal at the Academy. In 1951 he became a faculty member of the college. Fa- ther McMahan was chairman of the Education Department from 1954 until 1963. He has also served as Acting President and Vice-President of the college. Currently Father McMahan is Director of the Testing Program and the Academic Dean of St. Ambrose. --Father meets this difficult. job by up- holding the academic standards of this college, yet he never fails to realize the individual per- sonalities ofthe students. lt is because of his ability to balance the two factors in his present position as Academic Dean and because of his previous years of contribution to the St. Ambrose College Community, that we dedicate the Oaks '69 to Father Frederick McMa- han and hope to see future years of his outstand- ing and devoted service. .. f ' g J Bishop Gerald F. O'Keefe and two priest-faculty concelebrale Silver Jubilee Our Diocesan prelate, the Most Rev. Gerald F. O'Keefe celebrated his Sil- ver jubilee along with four other priests in this diocese. Of these four priests marking their twenty-fifth year of service will be two members of our priest-faculty staff at St. Ambrose Col- lege. The OAKS takes this opportunity to extend it's accolade to the Rev. Charles C. Shepler, head of our Speech Dep't. and to the Rev. John J. Dunne, Language professor in Span- ish. We wish them many more years ser- vice beyond their December, 1968 ob- servance and concelebrated anniver- saries. Left: Mrs. Spencer, the President's Sec'y, and Fr. McMa h3!'!. mm.....1... . Under the direction of Ambrosian Jim Ruder and Sue Putnam from Marycrest, the students of both schools truly went up and away for five thrilling days and nights. Homecoming '68 enjoyed the longest parade ever to appear in the Quad-Cities. A Queen's Tea was a very huge success and the addition of a float-building rally proved fruitful and fun. Another first was the hilarious greased pig contest. The flag football game with rival Augustana resulted in victory for the Bees. And no one will ever forget the Saturday evening concert with The Happenings, Fred Smoot, and Denny Brooks, or the fabulous atmosphere of the Friday night dance at the Col. The peak of homecoming was reached Saturday night at the Danceland party where students were surpised with the attendance of the Concert entertainers. 22 3 LEFT: Assumption High School Gym was the scene for Saturday eve- ning's concert with the Happenings . Walsh Accounting Chicago, Ill. After four years of living within an institution, one has usually come away affected by it without making a constructive contribution to its betterment. Since Mike Walsh was elected president of the sophomore class, he has worked to prevent situations of this type. As a member of the Student Government Association, and, finally, as its president, Mike has emphasized the importance of each individual student as well as that of the student body in formulating administrative policy. The great- ness of this institution will in no small way be due to the dedication and perseverance of Mike Walsh. It is for this reason that the Oaks staff honors him. 30 Patrick B. Elliott History Genoa, lll. Dennis P. Geraghty Physical Education Davenport, Ia. Thomas D. Rochford Political Science Peoria, lll. Pat Elliott is known by all at St. Ambrose College as a leader of social reform. Working closely with the Peace Movement on campus, he has helped initiate the Biafran Relief Fund and has been an active supporter of the Catons- ville Nine. Pat has also served on the Student Council during his junior and senior years as Off-Campus Representative. A smiling fellow with a laugh that catches on can best be described as a man of principle. Due to his unstinting enthusiasm and zest James Grayson is one of the most outstanding personalities of the senior class. His career at St. Ambrose has exemplified student involvement at its best. Besides holding several club and class offices, Jim has been active in Big Brothers, chorus and Theatre lll. Currently, he is president of the local Youth Council of the NAACP. This coupling of Jim's dynamic personality and his activist role on campus has culminated in his being elected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. James R. Grayson An outstanding guard and co-captain of the 1968-69 History basketball team, Dennis Geraghty is a playmaker who can remain calm in the tightest of clutch plays. Denny has also maintained a high average in grades as well as in scoring baskets. He has fittingly been awarded membership to the Monogram Club as a result of his fine performance and has been an active member of the Physical Education Department. Washington, D.C. Service to the college and to the community has been the outstanding quality of John Heidtke. His service has been shown through involvement in one of the most worthwhile organizations on campus-the Big Brother's Club. During the past year he was its president. John has also main- tained an admirable scholastic standing, especially in his major field. A likeable man with his devotion and respon- sible attitude toward some of our basic problems wins the recognition of the Oaks staff. John H. Heidtke Psychology Woodstock, lll. Soft spoken but involved is one of the best descriptions of Thomas Rochford. During the past four years Tom has served on the Student Council and was responsible for many successful homecomings. This past year he deserves credit for reviving a once dormant Young Democrats Club into an organization aware of the great political and moral questions facing us today. Despite his many commitments, Tom has maintained a very respectable grade average. 31 Jim Ruder: Homecoming 1968, Jim Ruder:Homecoming spiritg Jim Ruder: St. Ambrose spirit. Yes, Jim was the cause and the impetus behind this year's homecoming. How good aj job did he do? We all know the answer to that question. Jim in his usual hard working manner has also achieved mention in Who's Who Among American College Students for 1969. During his four years here at St. Ambrose, Jim has proven by his hard work and very vibrant enthusiasm that he is an outstanding Ambrosian and more than that, an outstanding personality. Jim, nobody else will be as welcome as you will be at Homecoming 1969. Jim, whose major is Philosophy, has a philoso- James P. Ruder Business phy all of his own-friendliness. His pleasant southern drawl is easy on the ear. He is always ready to lend a hand to help his fellow student. Among the boarders of Hayes Hall there is no better leader than Jim. He has served two years on both the Academic Senate and the Seminary Senate. If the saying Life is what you make of it is true, we know that Jim will have a very good life. Manteno, III. The Athletic Department will always be in- debted to the dedication and work of Dennis Thiessen. Through his excellent reporting in the weekly sports column and his involvement in the intramural program, our athletic program has enjoyed continued success. Denny has also put his speech major into practical use by par- ticipating in the debate team and broadcasting the basketball games. Always willing to be of service, the Voice of the Bees deserves special recognition for his many contributions. Dennis J. Thiessen Speech 8. Drama Davenport, la. Henry has been at St. Ambrose for three years now and maintains better than a B average. But Henry's specialty is running. He holds the school mile record, he is a member of the four mile and distance medley teams that also hold school records. In cross-country, he holds the school three, four, and five mile records. During his senior season he set seven consecu- tive course records at seven different schools. Henry has climaxed his cross country career here at St. Ambrose by placing 24th in the N.A.l.A. Na- tional Meet this fall. Needless to say, Henry is outstanding. 32 James D. Schneider Philosophy Magnolia, Ark. Henry A. Timbrook Economics E. Moline, lll. Michael J. Requirements for mem- bership in this national honor society are the achievement of a scholastic average of 3.5 in at least one semester of the freshman year and the demonstration of leadership ability on the part of the student. The first order of business was the actual initi- ation which took place in the Quiet Room of the student union. After this solemn ceremony which required the pledging of the initiates to the re- quirements of the honor society, all members were invited to a banquet in their honor. The speaker following the dinner was Fr. Lecture series 1968-69 The role of the modern religious woman in the present religious structure was the topic of Sister Mary SchaIdenbrand's lecture at the college center. The important need for a flexible religious woman in these times of religious reform was stressed by this Catholic nun who accented the vital role of the individual in the religious structure of modern society. Sister Schaldenbrand has achieved a Ph. D. degree in the field of Philosophy from the Catholic University of America. Sister Schaldenbrand was an instructor of Philosophy and is well known as an essayist of religious topics. Langdon Gilkey is a professor of The- ology at Chicago University who holds a Ph.D. degree in Theology. He is an out- standing Ieader among Protestant the- ologians. He has studied Catholic the- ology in Rome, Italy and did therefore give a revealing insight into contempor- ary religion from a layman's viewpoint. Mr. Gilkey is also the author of three books dealing with the need for better understanding of the current religious situation. Faith and the Person was the title of a lecture given on November 21, 1968 by Sister Mary Schaldenbrand. December 10, 1968 marked the appearance of Bruce Henderson, Religious Editor of Time, who reflected the opinion of Secular Communications. As Religion Editor of Time Magazine and a jour- nalist of years of experience, Bruce Henderson has surveyed the present situation of religion and theology with an acute awareness of the back- ground of this development. Mr. Henderson's lecture revealed his broad ken of knowledge of current religious affairs and more importantly, their complexity. The educated men and women of today must be conscious of their religious responsibilities. Dr. Daniel Callahan is an intelligent Catholic theologian who has taught, authored numerous books and is presently Executive Editor of Com- monweal. Despite this intellectual's relative youth, he is one of the most prominent Catholic theologians in the U.S. He has effectively com- bined scholarly research and, journalism to give a very informative insight into Catholic Theology. ln his presentation at the college, Dr. Callahan emphasized the necessity for an educated mem- ber of our society to shape some sort of a notion for himself of the essence of a Christian. 0 ix Q if l Below: Forming a Contemporary Christian Identity was the topic of Dr. Daniel Callahan. Chemistry Club The Chemistry Club comes under the heading of academically orientated organizations on campus. Although this club does throw one social date a year, its primary purpose is to acquaint its members with chemistry as much as it can. Usually this achieved by field trips and inform- ative tours of some of the relatively close to the Quad-Cities area chemical plants and industries like Chemplex, DuPont and Abbot Labs, which they visited earlier this year. 1968-69 Offerings This season did not stop or, for that matter, even slow down for Theatre lll. Besides the usual three major productions the St. Ambrose drama enthusiasts prepared two dramatic productions for television. The Hollow Crown , an innovation in reader's theater, and The Valiant , a one-act drama were seen on WOC-TV. Highlighting the year's ollerings was one of the only American tragedies, Detective Story. This play by Sidney Kingsley allowed for one of the largest and most ellicient casts in the history of Theatre Ill. THE TRE A Man for All Seasons opened in March to a tumult of praise and once again Theatre lll proved itself to be a compact, professional, and talented group. The successes of Theatre Ill are, in truth, due to the efforts of one man. Without his earnest and able direction the quality and professionalism of Theatre lll would be greatly diminished. Edward M. Catich, Art Department chairman. But this book is only the second in a series of three devoted to Imperial letters in ancient Rome. Actually this is his fourth book. The importance of the Origin is that it is documentary evidence supporting Father Catich's theory that the serif was brushed upon the stone by a skillful sign-writer and later was chiselled out, including the serif or finishing elements of the letters, carefully by the cutter. Years of research was conducted by Rev. Catich working with actual inscriptions in Europe from the period studied. The entire book was prepared by Catfish Press, another interest of Father Catich's here at St. Ambrose. With his knowledge and skill in printing, Rev. Catich can prepare his own works in calligraphy, paleography, and epigraphy. Z M1411 -:eq Z'geZ!U fn ASQ: mm' .510 ,Le i,,111a., ? I feng t s X 'Wa I 9 f X ' . ' -L X X X ' 'l'lI!inm. Four differ- ent schools hosted the 51 Ambrosian minstrels who enjoyed the trip as much as the audiences appreciated the excellent talents of the singers and musicians. The band provided a various program under the di- rection of Assistant Professor Frank Gerzina. Rev. J. E. Green conducted the chorus with Sister Rosaria Salerno as a guest soloist at St. Mary's Priory in Nauvoo, Ill. Paint Your Wagon was the title of the annual musi- cal production presented by St. Ambrose College. This stage presentation, which is currently being made into a movie, ran April 11,12 and 13th. The stage director for this show was Andrew Reagan while Fr. Greene filled the role of musical director. But the fine talents of the students from St. Ambrose provided a very worthwhile and distinguished demonstration of col- legiate theatrics. l64 Z. f W. Ou. WW M f.
