The school has arrived at a plateau both in academic content and atmosphere, and, from this plateau, the college must either expand or stagnate. Internally, the most notable occurrence within the aca- demic structure of the college is the contribution made by six of its teachers. Two teachers, Fr. Edward O'Connor and Fr. C. F. Griffith, are now serving the departments of philosophy and his- tory for their forty-Hfth year. In addition to these, four lay teachers, Miss Agnes Renner, Mr. Shannon Boyd, Dr. Prudent Coussens and Mr. John McGuire, have been teaching for twenty years. lt is a tribute to both the college and these educators that such loyalty is seen at St. Ambrose. The col- lege and students are well aware that these six teachers have become as much a part of the college as the buildings or the oaks. Externally, the most notable feature is, of course, the building plan with the first of its projects cur- rently under construction. It must be remembered that this is only part of the over construction program, and that its main goal is to bring to the school the best possible physical base for its operation. This year is truly a tribute to the spirit growth at St. Ambrose. COLLEGE ANNOUNCES PLANS Xxx XX, A Nw I X is BISHOP HA 2' ES RETIRES In September of I966, Bishop Ralph L. Hayes submitted his resignation to Pope Paul VI, The 82 year old preIate's tender was accepted by the Holy Father on October I9. Thus Bishop Hayes became the first Bishop to resign in keeping with the prescriptions ot the recent motu proprio Ecclesiae Sanctae ot Vatican II, which requested bishops to submit their resignation by their 75th birthday. Bishop Hayes, a native ot Pittsburgh, Pa., has been a priest tor 57 years and a bishop tor 33 years. He was installed as Head ot the Davenport Diocese on January II, I945. On Wednesday October 26, Pope Paul VI named the Most Reverend Gerald F. O'Keete, auxiliary to Archbishop Leo Binz of St. Paul-Minneapolis, Minn., to succeed Bishop Hayes as bishop ot Davenport. NEW PRELA TE: MOST RE VEREND GERALD F. O'KEEFE Bishop O'Keefe was ordained to the priesthood on January 24, I944 in St. Paul, Minn. On August 25, I945, he was named Chancellor ot the Archdiocese. Pope Pius XII appointed him a domestic prelate with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor on June I4, I957. He was named titular Bishop of Candyba and auxiliary to the late Archbishop William O, Brady of St. Paul on May 5, I96I. He was consecrated on July 2, I96I. At the time ot his ap- pointment at age 43, he was one ot the youngest bishops in the United States. Y' l' SIX CAREERS TOTAL 170 YEARS OF SERVICE The '67 Oaks is here dedicated to six members of the St. Ambrose College faculty family who have distinguished themselves by their years of scholarly labor on this campus. Humility is defined as a modest sense of one's own merits. As two of our priest-teachers approach their 45th year at St. Ambrose They seek no recognition of their meritorious achievements. The Very Reverend Edward M. O'Connor, Rector of the Seminary dep't labovel, and the Reverend C. Francis Grif- fith, Spiritual Director of the same department, joined the St. Ambrose Faculty in i922 immediately after ordination. They both have qualified for the highest competitive de- grees in their respective fields of Philosophy and History. Two genuine individuals, they have been known to thou- sands of Ambrosians through the years as Father Ed and Father Grif . The Rev. C. F. Griffith Dr. Prudent Coussens: Aside from the paperwork, I find the teaching profession most enjoyable. It is definitely a satisfying occupation and has even become lucrative. l can remember being seriously advised twenty years ago that it was a iob better left to women. The years have proved how short-sighted and incorrect this advice was. The years have also brought considerable frustration in one respect: one is increasingly made aware how little he can actually communicate. We need a breakthrough in the transmission of ideas. Both of our methods, by speech and the written word are insufferably antiquated and ineffective. It is indeed an inadequate Thank you that we extend to these two humble but celebrated campus figures. Mr. H. Shannon Boyd, head of The Engineer- ing Dep'T of ST. Ambrose College is anoTher member of The eliTe TwenTy year lay faculTy corps. He commenTs: parenTs have ThrusT The bulk of Their childrens educaTion inTo The Teachers' hands, so ThaT EducaTionisTs have become one of The mosT inTluenTial groups in our socieTy. FRONT ROW: Bob Wagner, Sgt. at Armsg Tom Rochfordg Mike Casey, Parliamentarian. This years' chapter ofthe Student Council was not at all characteristic of those which have gone before it in the history of St. Ambrose. The President of the Student Council, Tom Higgins, was elected in a dramatic upset which supposedly represented new interest and involvement in campus affairs. The Council came to stand for liberalism and a new era ot greater participation. Reviews and revisions of many standing school policies and traditions were initiated. Perhaps one of the most noteworthy accomplishments of the Student Council was to reahiiliate the campus with the National Student Association. We move onward. STUDENT COUNCIL FIRST ROW: Fr. Founded in 1947, the United States Student Association is an organization of college stu- dent councils united to consider common interests and fulfill specific needs. its goal is to promote inter-campus cooperation through a network of communication in the United States, and to fulfill the need for a national and international representation of American college students. Because of its association with USNSA, St. Ambrose has been able to take advantage of such pro- grams as a student government information service and the National Student Discount Service. Through communication with other colleges, St. Ambrose has been better able to see solutions to its own problems through the experiences of other institutions. All 54 Seminarians at the college are automatically members of this organization. The Manning Club invites guests to speak on topics in keeping with the Seminarian's goal in lite. Although the club does not sponsor social activities for the entire school, it does participate in Homecoming through decoration ot the campus. Also, it has an annual initiation or new Man party, a Christmas party, a St. Patrick's Day party as well as a Spring picnic. Although the local chapter at the American Institute of Physics is small, it provides its members, who are from both St. Ambrose and Marycrest, with many interesting and varied activities. The club has planned proiects for the future such as the building of electrical devices to demonstrate princi- ples. You're ready to begin reaching for future successes. But . . . how do you measure success? Not with a caliper or a yardstick or a stopwatch . . . not by the acre or the ounce or the cubic foot. Success is intangible . . . it is the sum of your personal goals and aspirations, sorted into positions of relative importance. Whatever you establish as your criteria of success, you will need to exercise self discipline. Ambition alone is not enough . . . even coupled with intelligence and talent. Self discipline is essential to direct your energies and abilities into productive channels . . . to provide you with initiative and perserverance. Develop this quality . . . you will enjoy a more rewarding life, a more successful life. Ambition is just the desire Io succeed. The world isfull of ambitious failures-all desire and no discipline. There never was known for those concerned with Volume 33 a time when they could say that they had nothing to do. ln fact, it seemed, as they looked up out of the confusion, like a useless effort to continue. All of us realized that someone had to do this iob and that the end, one way or another, couldn't be too far away. Because of the smallness of the staff, positions became secondary to the work that had to be done. This can be seen in the case of the faculty advisor, Mr. John Schmits, especially. Without him, the book would never have been, Mr. Schmits worked so strongly and continuously that at times it seemed as if he was the Yearbook Staff and we were spectators. There were others, too, who by their efforts and coopera- tion helped mightily in the completion of this book. Thanks to Mr, Jay Kane for his tiles and information, Miss Monholland and her staff for class lists, Mrs. Kay Spencer for Dorm and Student data, the librarians and school his- torians, the Coaches for help in their respective sports, John Berry for giving up his lunch hours to sort pictures, Bill Graf for his aid, Mike Rutfus for making almost 200 phone calls in one evening, the Times-Democrat and Cath- olic Messenger for photos and story material, the Ambrosian News for much more of the same, the American Yearbook Co. for publishing the '67 OAKS and all the others who helped in many ways toward this completion. My sincerest thanks of course goes out to Editors and as- sociates, Bob Ditmon and Jim Martin. Through these combined efforts of the St. Ambrose com- munity, some part of the essence of i967 has been reflected upon, written, rewritten and published. Editor-in-Chief, OAKS '67 Darold J.
