The administration and staff of St. Alphonsus High School are working to instill a sense of pride and accomplish- ment on the part of the faculty, students, and parents. Led by our new principal, Mr. Weiss, their goal for the 1986-87 school year was to return the academic and ethical standards that St. Alphonsus has always stood for. He wasn’t alone in his quest for perfection. Mr. Hudson was there to help him through the rough spots. Together, with the aid of Mr. Swaney, they worked on reviewing and revising the grading system and curriculum. Sr. Willard and Mr. Fundaro were kept busy by updating students’ files and, along with Fr. Mike, have been helping the students decide on colleges and help with problems. Down the hall in the Business Office you’re sure to have been greeted by the typing of Mrs. McGuire and an inquisitive remark from Sr. Clare Charles or Mrs. Zupancik. And if you need help finding the right book for your American Literature, Sr. Norita is the one to see. Without their encouragement and guidance St. Alphonsus would not be the same. The English department is very con- cerned with the students’ awareness of literary terms and writings and also with the development of their understanding of the English language. Mr. Dixon and his well-qualified staff are in the process of updating the content of their courses. They are also working for movies that will aid in the teaching of their material. During your freshman and sophomore years Mrs. Thompson, Mr. Maci, Mrs. Bailey, Mr. Bogner, and Mr. Kanine lay the basic foundation of the English language and its literature. Miss Trump and Miss Ciocan take over the literature department for the juniors and seniors and are more than happy to lend a helping hand when needed. When it comes to the up- perclassmen’s grammar Mr. Dixon can never be far behind. Mrs. Bailey once again comes to his aid to help the seniors with their writing skills to prepare them for a grueling life of college term papers. University of Michigan English 25 Mrs. Mary Thompson, B.A. Michigan State University English Whether your interests lie in Colonial America or the Government and Economics of today the Social Studies Department can help you to gain the information you seek. The teachers in this department care about the students’ potential for becoming con- cerned citizens in their country and world. Mr. Grywalski, with the help of Mrs. Labafinejad, Mrs. Zelinsky, Mr. Fundaro, Mr. Schnellbacher, and Mr. Hudson, has put together a curriculum that everyone can take part in. They offer courses in Geography, Government, Economics, Psychology, Colo- nial, American, and World History. They are also interested in the students’ need to discuss and become aware of the political issues we face today as well as past historical events. University of Michigan Typing, Accounting, Business Mrs. Roseann Gregory, B.A., M.S. University of Michigan. Wayne State University Typing, Word Processing The Business Department is designed to in- corporate the knowledge and skills learned in- to everyday living. Mrs. Gregory and Ms. DeSantis teach business students marketable skills in accounting, record keeping, word pro- cessing, shorthand, personal typing and retailing. Their goal is to honor top business students through competition and perfor- mance. This department is a vital aspect which needs to be expanded and offered to freshmen along with the upperclassmen. The growth of this department to include the underclassmen will also improve. The Business Office Education Club introduces more students to the many opportunities a career in business can offer. St. Alphonsus has always prided itself on efficient business students who will undoubtedly excel in the business world. Starting students into this branch of education earlier will also enable them to better develop their skills. Attending a Catholic High School, such as Saint Alphonsus. has many advantages. Developing a good moral and Christian outlook is extremely beneficial to one’s state of mind. The religious program consists of such influential people as Mr. Dixon. Mr. Guardiola. Ms. Provencher, Ms. Senton, Mrs. Holley, and Mr. Smith, along with professionals like Sister Rose Margaret and Sister Mary Willard. These teachers cover issues on pro- life, economics, war. and peace. One of their projects in- cludes making Christmas baskets for needy families. The courses offered in the religion department are Old Testament. New Testament, relating, church history, morality, sacraments, death and dying, documents of Vatican II, and marriage. These classes are required in certain grades during your high school years. These religion teachers are always striving to spiritually educate their students and to provide a formal academic educa- tion in the Catholic faith. In doing this, it helps to develop and deepen the prayer life of the students. Mr. Mark Smith, B.A. Henry Ford C. C., Colorado State, E.M.U. Math, Religion Mr. Louis Guardiola. Theology Loyola of Chicago Religion Ms. Lydia Senton, B.A. Madonna College Religion. History Miss Edna Rheault, B.A., M.A. Wayne State University French Mrs. Cynthia Labaflnejad, B.A., M.A. Ohio State University French, Economics Have you ever daydreamed of jetting to Madrid? Or sightseeing in Marseilles? Then the Foreign Language Department has just the door for you to knock on. Mile Rheault and Senora Stepien have been working together for the past three years to develop a sense of accomplish- ment and pride on the part of the students. This year they are joined with Mme. Labaflnejad who will help them in motivating the students to im- prove their communication skills and to develop an awareness and acceptance of other people’s cultures. They are very dedicated to the stu- dent’s understanding of material in class and also with the furthering of their own knowledge. This department is very interesting in class ac- tivities involving music, culture, holidays, and customs of countries in which the target language is spoken. Foreign language week is another major concern. 29 M IT Ilf This year’s math team consists of captain Frank Swaney, umpire Kenneth Harrison, rookie pitcher Frank Ahern, outfielder Donna Rasmussen, and shortstop Carole Nunez. With the bases and classes loaded with eager students, these teachers manage to make a hit. The events offered to the students are General math, algebra, geometry, algebra II and trigonometry, math IV, and pre-calculus. These courses make up a well-rounded and beneficial math “game”. In these classes the students are taught skills that are essential in preparing for college as well as a future career. Although math is only required for two years, it is almost always taken for four. The students know the importance of a math education. It’s a serious game, but with a team like ours, how can we lose? Mr. Frank Swaney, B.S. M.C.C.C., University of Detroit Pre-Calculus, Algebra Mrs. Donna Rasmussen, B.A., B.A., M.Ed. M.S. Oberlin College, U of M, E.M.U. Chemistry, Physics Mr. Kenneth Johnson. B.S., M.S. Wayne State University Anatomy, Biology Our science department here at St. Alphonsus is very well-rounded, with courses such as Basic Biology, Biology, Honors Biology. Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, Physics, and Anatomy and Physiology. Our students are encouraged to pursue educational and career paths in Science and technical fields. This year’s science courses are taught by experienced scien- tists like Mr. Murlin Varner, Mr. Donald Keiffer, and Mr. Kenneth Johnson. These three teachers en- courage Questioning of all things of science. If the students long to know and understand, then the op- portunity is there. The courses offered give the students a respect for logic and consideration of con- sequences. Whether it’s the bending of glass, the counting of atoms or the study of the human body and its functions, the student is kept interested and ex- posed to many new explanations. In a series of lull year science courses, the teachers give insight from experience and educate a skill of science beneficial to students. The students can then experiment further to promote the values that underlie science. 31 Extra! Extra! Read all about it. St. Alphon- sus is offering more than just reading, writing and arithmetic. These are extra curricular courses and extraordinary classes. Courses such as band, choral, drafting, drawing, in- troduction to art, painting, sculpture, child development, single survival, home economics, clothing, physical education, health and a library full of materials available to the students. Students explore unique ways of com- municating and exploring their individual talents with the guidance from Ms. Renick, Ms. Provencher, Ms. Trump, Mr. Ahern and Mrs. Kumor. Well, it is usually a group of students who are an organizing force in the school community. Students who choose to be leaders give their time and effort to this governing body. The group meets twice a month to discuss issues and events happening throughout the school. These meetings are organized in the proper fashion with end results that show initiative and respon- sibility. Class officers and delegates are represent- atives for their classmates on issues that concern student involvement. Activities such as Homecom- ing, Mardi Gras, Christmas door competition. Stu- dent of the Week, Teacher of the Month and the school pride committee all provide unique events for the entire school community. These students work hard to keep St. Alphonsus exciting as well as challenging for not only the leaders but also for the followers. Assistant Treasurer: Mary Pawlik, Secretary: Laura Gorny, President: Erik Pytlak Vice President: Ingrid Butler. Public Relations: Elaine Gurka, Treasurer: Lily Woo. The National Honor Society of St. Alphonsus is composed of students who exhibit talent and achievement in academic and extracurricular ac- tivities. These capable young people give a great deal of time and energy to our school both inside and outside the classroom. Leading Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors come together to raise funds for two scholarships. These students are chosen by the teachers based on their grades, activities and service. Members are frequently called upon to per- form special duties needed by the school. St. Alphonsus takes great pride in our National Honor Society members as they lead their fellow students in academics and activities. Advisor, Mr. Dixon organizes many fund raisers that help these students accomplish their goals. Front Row: Paul Mylenek, Lily Woo, Darla Williams, Jean Laidlaw, Sandy Rodriguez. With a monthly distribution, this informa- tional tabloid encompasses news about coming events, recent athletic victories, Senior spotlights, activity reflections and of course the ever popular Person-Als. The Arrow Tribune staff with editor, Teresa Roscoe crank out noteworthy editorials and information for the student body. Reporting and writing are disciplined arts that require thought, preparation and creative antidotes. The advisor, Mrs. Bailey demands perfection which has created a well liked and well read newspaper. She organizes her staff in a way that is efficient as well as produc- tive. New articles giving advice, viewing opinions, asking questions and just summarizing all add a new dimension which is vital for a school newspaper. Spirit, memories, pride, friendships and ac- complishment all symbolize the importance of an annual yearbook. This year’s team of hard-working and dedicated staff members has put together a comprehensive look into 1986-1987 life at St. Alphonsus. This book is composed of photographs, writings, graphic design and artistic typesetting all put together to look good and stand out. Ms. Renick takes great pride in teaching this class. She feels that every high school needs to keep its memories of friendships, winning teams and suc- cessful events. These special memories will last forever in this book and twenty years from now you can re-live those events, friendships and winning seasons. It’s all in the book! Ms. Renick would like to thank her hard working staff, Craine Studio, Taylor Publishing and all those who believe in sav- ing the memories. These hard working business people train for competition in regional and state contests. The competition among 500 students requires skills in various business subjects including com- puters. The top three winners in each category are eligible to go to the state level. This is an excellent opportunity to match your learning against that of other students at the same level of ex- pertise. The group also has a national service project, the special Olympics which they support with monetary and volunteer donations. The International Club at St. Alphonsus is one of the largest groups at the school. Mrs. Labifine- jad and Mrs. Stepien have planned some exciting cultural events to challenge and stimulate the foreign language learning process. The club began with attending Noel night in downtown Detroit. It was a great ex- perience for all who attended. I ate in the year the group participated in a Greek even, with slides and a trip to Greek town for some authentic flavor. Finally, an organized and com- petitive chess team has arrived at St. Alphonsus. Advisor, Mr. Murlin Varner has worked hard to bring together these fine athletes of the mind. The St. Alphonsus chess team is now a member of the Southeast Michigan Chess League with an overall record of 2 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie. W'ith a rigorous schedule, these young players are devoted and strong willed. Some manage to play every day after school during chess open sessions. All of this hard work paid off as two teams went to the state tournament where the St. Al's team finished in 15th place. Mr. Varner is quite optimistic and has great expec- tations for next year’s chess players. St. Alphonsus is very lucky to have a special sing- ing group like the Mixed Trends. This talented ensemble rehearses twice a week throughout the school year. With eleven members including Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors, the group brings a variety of music to the St. Alphonsus community. Ms. Melodie Provencher directs the group in per- forming at all school masses, including Ring Day and Graduation. They also give two concerts, per- form at a Wednesday program and visit Sr. citizen homes and grade schools. These talented young singers learn new tunes as well as oldies but goodies so there is something for everyone to enjoy. 134 Advisor. Ms. Provencher Front Row: Cynthia Anderson. Daniel Donakowski. Malawy celebrated the mass that honored them by blessing their rings. Mr. Weiss, our principal, involved the senior officers in their caps and gowns, congratulating and wishing the seniors luck in the coming school year. Following the mass the sophomore class spon- sored a pancake breakfast for the seniors and faculty. Fr. Dave returned for the day to give blessings to them for that day and the rest of their final year here at St. Alphonsus. Sophomore class president Liz Miruzzi filled the gym with laughter as her speech covered the high points and some of the low spots of last year and the years before. The parade led our queen, court, and honor guards to the play- ing field hoping to cheer the Arrow men on to victory. A balloon launch marked the beginning of something big as our team rushed across the field to engage in combat. As halftime rolled around we were already in the lead. The sophomore class was announced the winner of the float competition and Presi- dent Liz Miruzzi was at a loss for words. The chief of police presented the senior women with roses as they were presented to the crowd. When the second half began there was no doubt as to if we would win. The varsity football players proved themselves by leaving their op- ponents in the dust. The dance wrapped up the festivities and the football players escorted the girls to the front of the stage. The court members, Wendy Bushey, Elaine Gurka, Gloria Ramirez, and Lily Woo, were led by Queen Jean Laidlaw in a dance with their escorts. The Honor Guard members, In- grid Butler, Laura Gorny, Valerie Maclsaac, Lisa Milewski, Mary Pawlik, Teresa Roscoe, Debbie Vehoski, Erika White, Stacey White, and Darla Williams, also had their turn in the “Moonlights’ Serenade.” 2 3 142 1. Since 1984, the St. Alphonsus student body has raised over $5,000 through donations and fund- raisers. This year proved to be just as successful as years past. With a Carribean theme, the students dressed the part with fancy shorts, sunglasses and fun in the sun smiles. The homeroom and class competi- tions were stiff but the Seniors reined with King, Dave Lorelli and Queen, Rea Clark. Mr. Swaney and the student council demonstrated their overall organization and enthusiasm which echoed through the halls. Mardi Gras culminates with a carnival and a dance which is held the day before Ash Wednesday. The carnival is our biggest fundraiser, which brings in almost half of our carnival income.
