4Ccae Wct i t e Sfitnit Learning from the past, guiding for the present and planning for the future — this is the three-fold function of the Catholic religion in the world today, and the role played by parochial schools in carrying out this function is an important one. Throughout the four years of high school, religion classes broaden the minds and open the minds and the hearts of St. Alphonsus’ students through courses which show that the history of the Church is the history of man, his successes and his failures. Ap- preciative students put these years to good use; for questioning minds are never discouraged and pro- blems need never go unsolved if one is willing to ac- cept the counseling of a qualified instructor. The students are also given an overall view of the Catholic Church, the sweeping changes being made in its liturgy, and its position on crucial current events. The combination of Mass and prayer brings a feeling of excitement to this important subject. Sister Rose Margaret, O.P., B.A., M.S. Siena Heights. DePauI, U of M. 76e Sfarfie fo (? wte The Physical Education program at St.Alphonsus stresses the importance of hard work, endurance, game plans and health knowledge. Sports activities are strong here at St. Alphonsus and the knowledge that is passed on to the students enables our teams to be strong. As athletic director Mr. Kanine coordinates all athletic events while providing an organized at- mosphere for the physical education courses. Mr. and Mrs. Holley provide strenuous workouts for a variety of reasons. Body building, endurance and condition- ing all come together to encourage an understanding of our bodies. Along with the physical workouts, game strategy is also taught. Students are exposed to volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, football and aerobics. This program is well rounded and enjoyable. Mr. Gerald Holley, B.S. in Physical Education Central Michigan University. Physical Education.
