Behn and Mr. James Hudson. These capable men make decisions concerning all aspects of the school community. Mr. Theodore Behn, our principal, is the man who keeps things going. Mr. Behn has attended various colleges, which include Henry Ford Community Col- lege, University of Michigan Dearborn, and Eastern Michigan University. He taught for nine years at many different grade levels in subjects such as History and English. Mr. James Hudson has been the St. Alphonsus assistant Principal for two years. He has taught a variety of subjects as well as grade levels before com- ing to St. Al’s. Mr. Hudson attended Victoria Univer- sity of Manchester in Britain along with the Universi- ty of Michigan. These two men work hard to manage our school business and promote a pleasant academic school environment. Mr. James Hudson, B.A., M.A. Victoria University of Manchester, Padgate College, Vice Principal Mrs. I ouise McGuire Secretary Sr. Mary Willard. O.P. Guidance Mrs. Marilyn Reagan Guidance Everyone at St. Alphonsus high school is ex- tremely grateful to the many people who work to keep this school running. They make unselfish contributions to all areas of our school com- munity. They perform the tedious and often thankless work that makes our school lives a lit- tle easier. We see Mrs. McGuire and Sr. Clare Charles busily organize the business paper work while Sr. Willard and Mrs. Reagan manage the recruitment and college programs. Sr. Norita’s financial expertise is always ap- preciated, and finally. Father Koss gives us great support and terrific slide shows. Without these people, St. Alphonsus could not function. Father David Koss Not Pictured: Sr. Clare Charles. O.P. Sr. Norita Marie. O.P. t pcut Do you want to be a journalist, a newspaper reporter, or even an editor? Well, St. Al’s English Department will give you a basic knowledge and a broad view of the English language and its uses. All of the English classes are unique in that they offer an understanding of our culture and other cultures around us. As a result, the major goal is to create a well-rounded St. Al’s student. The English Department faculty hopes the students of St. Al’s will accomplish what is necessary to master the English language. This fact is justified by Ms. Ciocan with her words of wisdom and Mrs. Bailey’s good criticism. Mr. Dixon has a lot to say, while Mrs. Rieth makes our day. The English teachers want their students to be conscientious and diligent in their work. Mr. Donald Dixon, B.A University of Michigan (Dearborn), English Religion Mrs. Brenda Bailey, B.A. Notre Dame College (Ohio), U. of M. (Dearborn), English Mrs. Mary Beth Rieth. B.A., M.ED. The business department works behing the scene to create students to rise to the top of the “Business Ladder.’’ 17 4 'pKMt t ie Pcwt Mrs. Velia Lorelli, B.A., M.A.ED. University of Michigan, History Social Studies offers a broad understanding of the social sciences. This subject deals with our inter-relationships with others. Social Studies offers a four-year program designed to develop skills such as reading com- prehension, geography skills, knowledge of our past, and the ability to function as an informed consumer. Social Studies offers a wide range of subject areas, allowing students to see the past and its influence on the present. World History, Colonial History, Geography, American History, Economy, Government, and Street Law are taught by Mrs. Lorelli, Mr. Thostenson, and Mr. Grywalski through our high school years. Well we encourage you to take French or Spanish. This department provides each student with the opportunity to learn a foreign language, not only for personal enrichment, but also to meet the demands of knowing and being able to communicate in other languages. It is the aim of the language department to have each student develop the four skills of reading, writing, understanding and speaking the target language. Our foreign language teachers hope that the students of St. Al’s will use the language of their choice with ease and fluency. Ms. Rheault introduces special projects such as attending French art exhibits. Mrs. Stepien hopes to bring about discipline in learn- ing a foreign language, while Mr. Teahan wants the students to live the language and appreciate its culture. It is possible for the students to achieve these goals with the guidance from our faculty and self determination. Mrs. Marissa Stepien, B.A., M.A. University of Detroit, U of M. Math The Mathematics Department aims to develop in its students the ability to use information and material in- telligently, to guide students toward logical thinking and its applications, to further develop basic fundamental skills, to challenge each student to improve skills and to develop a precision in using the language of Mathematics. The Mathematics courses offered are designed to follow a four-year sequential order, whether in Basic, Regular, or Honors Program. The Mathematics Department also at- tempts to develop an understanding of the roles of Mathematics in the student’s life and to make the student self-sufficient when Mathematics does become a part of their lives. Nunez, B.A. Wayne State University, Math 20 IR.ecU Science is so important to the future of the world. Students need to be aware of not only their own bodies and immediate environment, but also the entire world’s environment and what they can do to improve it. Here at St. Alphonsus, the science department allows the opportunity for the students to achieve this goal. Hands on experiences in the lab rooms makes the learn- ing process different from a regular lecture. Students gather information from various experiments and apply these results to other related projects. The teachers hope the students will have the ability to reason, think through a problem and communicate their ideas. Mrs. Eleanor Jones, B.S., M.Ed. Westhampton College of University of Richmond. Science 21 4Ccae Wct i t e Sfitnit Learning from the past, guiding for the present and planning for the future — this is the three-fold function of the Catholic religion in the world today, and the role played by parochial schools in carrying out this function is an important one. Throughout the four years of high school, religion classes broaden the minds and open the minds and the hearts of St. Alphonsus’ students through courses which show that the history of the Church is the history of man, his successes and his failures. Ap- preciative students put these years to good use; for questioning minds are never discouraged and pro- blems need never go unsolved if one is willing to ac- cept the counseling of a qualified instructor. The students are also given an overall view of the Catholic Church, the sweeping changes being made in its liturgy, and its position on crucial current events. The combination of Mass and prayer brings a feeling of excitement to this important subject. Sister Rose Margaret, O.P., B.A., M.S. Siena Heights. DePauI, U of M. Sports activities are strong here at St. Alphonsus and the knowledge that is passed on to the students enables our teams to be strong. As athletic director Mr. Kanine coordinates all athletic events while providing an organized at- mosphere for the physical education courses. Mr. and Mrs. Holley provide strenuous workouts for a variety of reasons. Body building, endurance and condition- ing all come together to encourage an understanding of our bodies. Along with the physical workouts, game strategy is also taught. Students are exposed to volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, football and aerobics. This program is well rounded and enjoyable. Mr. Gerald Holley, B.S. in Physical Education Central Michigan University. Physical Education. Religion 24 S w et U iy fat Sueny te St. Al’s offers more than just Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. The Arts Program includes Visual Arts, Music, Drafting, Home Economics and Library Science. All of these extra curricular activities provide a chance to experience things outside the classroom. Art, Music and Drafting all require self-discipline and skill. Creativity and imagination are vital and these classes produce great works and performances. Home Economics, as well as the Library, gives in- formation that is vital for today’s living. Child development, bachelor of living and clothing all help as a resource tool. The library also is a resource area. There are more books than you can imagine, which is relief when reports are due. It all began with hope that the Arrows would have a victory, and hope that the pouring rain would stop. The parade started at one o’clock with great looking floats and beautiful girls riding down Schaefer Avenue, with the girls hiding from the rain under umbrellas. Meanwhile, at Fordson field, an en- thusiastic crowd of Arrow fans filled the field to watch our Varsity team play. Arrow gridmen battled and splattered in the mud. Even though their hard-pushing drives were stopped by St. Clements the Arrow fans never gave up. Led by soaked cheerleaders, the crowd encouraged their team till the last second of play. Although the rain stopped, St. Clements didn’t, and even if we lost the game, this year’s Homecoming was by far the best that anyone had ever seen.
