The festivities began with the Homecoming parade which was led by Mr. Marusich and the St. Alphonsus Marching Band. The parade featured the Queen, Court, and Honor Guard, along with the beautifully decorated cars and floats. The parade led us to Fordson Field where we watched our mighty Arrows play a tough game. Homecoming came to a climax with a touch of class —“Samedi Soir a Paris,” a dance that provided many wonderful memories. 4. 5. 6. 12 I. One of the many beautifully decorated cars. 2. Kathy, Joan. Birthstones, friendship and wedding rings all mark various occasions. But the first really important ring a person receives is his or her Senior Class Ring. Out of all the events that take place during senior year, the one event that gives seniors the most pride in themselves is Ring Day. Ring Day is the first step toward graduation. The mass began with seniors carrying their freshly pressed gowns draped over their arms, entering the church in a ceremonial procession. After the senior officers were in- vested by Mr. O’Donnell, the rest of the class of “81” was in- troduced to the student body as they were invested. Soon after this, the rings were blessed by Father Leo Primer. After the seriousness of the morning, the seniors hung up their gow ns temporarily to enjoy a breakfast given in the honor of the class of “81” by the sophomores. Sophomore President Jeff Schultz gave a speech, reminding the seniors of the past three years. This day will truely be remembered by the class of “81”. 9 1. Bye, Bye, Bird- ie, may have reminded many of a time long ago. For the cast, it was a re- creation of an era of nostalgia. Bobby socks, poodle skirts, leather jackets, penny loafers flooded the locker rooms and St. AI's gym became the hang-out. Many new and wonder- ful moments united the cast into a family. The cast was able to produce a fine production combining music, acting and dance into an enjoyable evening. Many thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. Maci, Ms. van Valzah, Mr. Marusich, and Mr. Sergus for their hard work and dedication. 20 H B y e, B y e, 1. Julie. Kathy. We Love You Arrows deep down in our hearts. Deep, deep, down, down, deep down in our hearts. Deep, deep, down, down, deep down in our hearts.” The people spreading this love and loyalty over our Arrow teams and the students are the members of the Pep Club. Denise Muscat and Nancy Cuzik lead the hard working spirit team this year. Decorating the locker room, making signs, baking goodies, planning agendas just to name a few, are some of the things this busy organization goes around doing. The Pep Club is trying to surround every team and students this year with that “Go, Get ’Em” spirit. So get off your feet, come on everybody get the ARROW'beat!!! 28 SCHOOL SONG On St. Alphonsus, on gold and blue. Carry’ our Arrows all the way through. Fighting together victory' will be ours. With the spirit to top all others. We’ll lead on to victory. Our mighty Arrows will win this game. We’ll never be outdone. But if our team should face defeat, We will still remain as ONE! We may not hear about the band often, but when we do-it’s always a good “note”. They have played for various inductions during the school year, in the Homecoming and St. Patrick's Day Parades, and have provided the “jams” for the musical. “Bye. Bye, Birdie.” Some of the members even started a Pep Band to spring spirit and excitement to the football and basketball games. Students at St. APs should feel pride in the fact that we have such a fine music depart- ment. The band has provided young musi- cians with the opportunity to express themselves, in a very unique way. So pardon us if we “toot our horns” for the band in recognition of a job well done. Bravo! 39 Mardi Gras Relives the ’50’s Mardi Gras is a time of fun, but it is also a time of giving. The whole purpose of the Mardi Gras is to raise money for the missions. The fun fill- ed adventures begin with homeroom competition, to class competition, to the carnival, and finally, the dance. Once again, the class of 81 show- ed involvement in the Mardi Gras festival. This is the second time they have won the king and queen com- petition. The underclassmen showed their enthusiasm as well. The Freshmen came in second place, followed by the Sophomores and then the Juniors. There was a sense of competition; however, it was lessened by the sense of giving shown by all involved. A great many people benefited by the generosity of the students at St. Al's. 40 I. Tons Wilcher tie Tammy Hunter are the winners. 2 The Mardi Gras in- volves all. 3. They fell short at Homecoming, and fell short of the Dome, but when they prepared to play their game, it was Hustle-Hit—Never Quit! It’s true—they never lack- ed hustle and that’s what counts in the St. Al’s home. FRONT ROW: L to R: F. laquinta, P. Butcher, D. Czarnota, J. Dolunt. J. Fusco, E. Jordan. M. Bagozzi, J. Sheehan, M. Many hard hours of work were put forth by all the team members. Coaches Gary and Stan Kus with the help of Captains Bob Mills and Paul Mistor did a great job of leading all the runners. The team is very young and next year should be even stronger than this year. A big accomplishment for the cross country team was taking a third place finish at the Lincoln Park Invitational, a very grueling meet. The Freshmen class of 1984 has finally become a part of the long awaited high school life. Walk- ing into the school for the first time turns their wide smiles into fearful looks. The burden of the world falls heavily on their shoulders as they walk through the halls, not knowing where they are go- ing. Ending up in the science lab when its lunch time can be very embarassing. But the embar- rassments soon fade away when they realize that they are not just the Freshmen class, but a part of an ever growing family. The Seniors initiated them into the family at the first dance of the year by providing many surprises for the newly formed class. It was their first taste of high school social life. They didn’t mind cleaning up after their big brothers and big sisters, the Seniors. The scary idea of meeting the Seniors face to face soon faded. Big Brother, Big Sister Day was not only for fun but a way to become closer to the class of ‘81. The Freshmen performing on stage will always be remembered. The Freshmen also became closer to each other during Freshmen Unity Week. Many new friends were found and much fun was had by all. The year consisted of many events from winning homecoming float competition, to saying good-bye to the Seniors at the last dance of the year, the Freshmen dance. To Mr. O'Donnell and Mr. Behn for their con- cern for us, the yearbook staff, and the rest of the stu- dent body. To Father Yagley and Father Quane for their helpful support over this past year. To the faculty of St. Alphonsus for the great job of supporting the 1981 yearbook. Lastly, I would like to thank Mr. Dix- on for all his long, hard hours of work so we could get our job done. We sure couldn't have done it without you. The memor f of this yearbook will stay with me for many years. The struggle we, the staff, went through to get it done is ultimately impossible. The work of getting a yearbook published is tremendous and it is even more amazing that we have finished it with all the obstacles we had to overcome. The first month of the year the camera broke and it had to be shipped out to be fixed. After that, there were over 20 rolls of film destroyed, so this meant we were behind on the book for more than a month and a half. With Mr. Dixon pushing us all the time, we worked together to have it ready for you. This year's theme was movies. There was much thought in picking this theme. Many hours were used to figure out how to make the theme present throughout the entire book. The reason why we picked this theme is because the school year is much like what goes on in making a movie. You have people behind the scenes and you people who act. In school, it is the same way. You have the people who organize and get things ready and those are those are the ones who act. If you didn't have the people who did the little things, then there would be no accomplishments dur- ing a school year. What ever your role was this year, we couldn't have done it without your help.
